Experiences of burden and needs in caregivers with pediatric noninfectious uveitis: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term, potentially lifelong therapy is needed to treat noninfectious uveitis (NIU) in children. Previous research has focused primarily on treatment approaches, but few studies have investigated the effect of children's chronic illness on other family members. The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of burden and needs in caregivers of children with NIU, and to provide a reference for formulating targeted intervention strategies. METHODS: A total of 11 caregivers of children with NIU were recruited from a tertiary-level eye hospital in Wenzhou Province, China. For

Reinterpreting ethnic patterns among white and African American men who inject heroin: a social science of medicine approach.

BACKGROUND: Street-based heroin injectors represent an especially vulnerable population group subject to negative health outcomes and social stigma. Effective clinical treatment and public health intervention for this population requires an understanding of their cultural environment and experiences. Social science theory and methods offer tools to understand the reasons for economic and ethnic disparities that cause individual suffering and stress at the institutional level. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used a cross-methodological approach that incorporated quantitative, clinical, and ethnograph

Medicaid Is an Important Driver of a Healthier North Carolina, But Not Enough to Dismantle Persistent Health Inequities.

Medicaid expansion has improved coverage for low-income North Carolinians, but persistent racial and geographic inequities limit its impact. Despite early gains and innovative social-care pilots, Black and Hispanic communities continue to face barriers to access, continuity, and outcomes. Lasting improvement will require sustained investment in primary care, navigation support, and the social factors that shape health.

Impact of rumination versus distraction on anxiety and maladaptive self-beliefs in socially anxious individuals.

A large body of experimental evidence has demonstrated the adverse effects of rumination on depressive mood and cognitions. In contrast, while prominent models of social phobia (Clark & Wells, 1995; Rapee & Heimberg, 1997) have proposed rumination as a key maintaining factor, the effects of rumination in social anxiety have not been extensively explored. In a sample of (N = 93) undergraduates, this study investigated the impact of rumination versus distraction following a social-evaluative task on anxiety and another key component of social phobia: maladaptive self-beliefs. Relative to distrac

Life events and social rhythms in bipolar spectrum disorders: a prospective study.

This study examined the social zeitgeber theory, which suggests that affective symptoms are caused by life events disrupting vulnerable individuals' social and circadian rhythms. Undergraduate participants were selected based on a 2-phase screening process, including a semistructured diagnostic interview. The final sample consisted of 101 bipolar spectrum participants and 100 demographically matched normal controls. Participants who completed up to 3 follow-up visits, approximately every 4 months, as part of a longitudinal study were included in the current study. Life events did not predict s

Understanding Mechanisms that Maintain Social Anxiety Disorder in Autistic Individuals Through the Clark and Wells (1995) Model and Beyond: A Systematic Review.

Given the high co-occurrence of social anxiety in autism, no reviews to date have explored how cognitive and behavioural mechanisms identified to maintain social anxiety in non-autistic individuals may operate in autistic individuals. This systematic review evaluated: (1) empirical evidence underlying the Clark and Wells (1995) Cognitive Model of Social Anxiety in autistic individuals; (2) how vulnerability factors identified from autism literature (beyond core autistic traits) may be associated with social anxiety beyond the cognitive model. Published peer-reviewed English articles until 27th

Moderating variables in the relationship between social comparison and depression: an evolutionary perspective.

This study investigated the relationship between social comparison and depression utilizing an evolutionary framework. It investigated the moderating effects on social comparison of the importance of comparison dimensions to the person, and of the perceived importance of the dimensions to other people. An adaptation of a measure of self-esteem (Self Attributes Questionnaire; Pelham & Swann, 1989) was utilized. This consisted of 10-point Likert scale ratings on 10 individual social comparison dimensions (e.g. intelligence, social skills, sense of humour). Questions were added to explore beliefs

The social self in bulimia nervosa: public self-consciousness, social anxiety, and perceived fraudulence.

Bulimic women appear preoccupied not only with their physical presentation but also with their "social self"--how others perceive them in general. This study examined the relationship of the social self to body esteem and to bulimia nervosa. In Phase 1, in which 222 nonclinical women (aged 16 to 50) participated, the social-self measures of Perceived Fraudulence, Social Anxiety, and Public Self-Consciousness were negatively associated with body esteem. In Phase 2, 34 bulimic women were compared with 33 Ss scoring high on the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and 67 matched control. Bulimic Ss, high-
