Objectives Our objective was to perform the first multicentric study in Spain to evaluate the prevalence of feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), Chlamydophila felis and Mycoplasma felis in cats with upper respiratory tract disease (URTD), conjunctivitis and/or gingivostomatitis (GS) compared with control cats; and to evaluate risk factors for these clinical conditions. Methods Conjunctival and oropharyngeal swabs were collected and a questionnaire regarding signalment, lifestyle, vaccination history and clinical signs was obtained for each cat. Swabs were tested for each pat…

PURPOSE: Subjects undergoing chemotherapy often develop disorders in salivation and changes in salivary composition. Therefore, a tendency to inflammatory states developing within oral mucosa is often observed. The objective of the study was to assess the effect of disturbed immunity on the gum condition in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) during anti-tumour treatment and to compare saliva interleukin-2 (IL-2) concentration in relation to the condition of gums oral mucositis-must be removed in children with ALL.
METHODS: The study included 78 children with ALL in followed thr

PURPOSE: We tested the efficacy of oral recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) against radiation-induced oral mucositis in a rat model.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Each of 35 Sprague-Dawley rats, 7 to 8 weeks of age and weighing 178 +/- 5 grams, was irradiated once in the head region with 25 Gy, using a 4-MV therapeutic linear accelerator at a rate of 2 Gy/min. The irradiated rats were randomly divided into four groups: those receiving no treatment (Group 1), those treated with vehicle only three times per day (Group 2), and those treated with 50 microg/mL (Group 3), or 100 microg/mL (G

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: With the progression of radiotherapy techniques, the 5-year overall survival rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients has increased obviously. As the survival time prolonged, more and more attention was paid to various radiation sequelae and the quality of life of the patients. This study was to explore the role of individual dental stent in sparing normal oral tissues for primary NPC patients in radiotherapy by pushing the tongue and a part of oral mucous membrane away from the radiation fields.
METHODS: Irradiation dose and volume of the tongue of a NPC patien

Recurrent aphthous ulcerations (RAU) represent a common oral mucosal disease with altered humoral and cellular immunities. Tien-Hsien liquid (THL) is an extract of Chinese medicinal herbs with immunomodulating effects. Our previous study found that THL can modulate the antigen-stimulated proliferative response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and T-cells isolated from RAU patients. In this study, we further tested whether THL can modulate the antigen-stimulated cytokine production by T-cells isolated from RAU patients. To achieve this goal, T-cells isolated from 19 RAU patients were incub

The conditions of complex aphthosis, EM, MMP, and the VVG variant of erosive oral LP may be confused by clinicians who refer patients for diagnosis and management of BD (Table 8). The mucocutaneous presentations or the presence of complex aphthosis, the hallmark of BD, can be confusing and lead to the referral of the patient for a diagnosis of BD. The astute clinician evaluating patients for BD considers pseudo-BD in the differential diagnosis of the mucocutaneous manifestations of BD.

Part of periodontology involves the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of non-plaque-related diseases of the periodontium. The International Workshop for a Classification of Periodontal Diseases and Conditions noted that the periodontist may be called upon to manage non-plaque-related mucocutaneous disorders either alone, or as part of a treatment team consisting of physicians, dentists or other allied health care professionals. This informational paper will review the etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of the most common chronic mucocutaneous diseases, including tho

BACKGROUND: Manifestations of immunosuppression may take the form of opportunistic infection, and neoplasia. While this paper has focused on gingival and periodontal manifestations. these tissues cannot be evaluated in isolation. The presence of involvement of other oral tissues such as the cheek or tongue with manifestations associated with HIV such as hairy leukoplakia, Kaposi's sarcoma at these sites, and candidiasis in addition to periodontal manifestations may further increase the clincal suspicion of underlying immunosuppression and/or progression of the immunosuppressive state.

Reports of T-cell lymphomas in the oral cavity are rare. Most have presented as a persisting ulcerated swelling. This paper reports two men, one of whom presented with a short history of increasing facial swelling and pain apparently related to a lower premolar tooth, and the other who had recurrent oral ulceration in several sites over a period of years. These types of cases are likely to present initially to general dental practitioners.

Two patients, a 34-year old man-to-woman transsexual and a 32-year-old man, with aids presented with pulmonary symptoms, fever, serious weight loss and an oral ulcer. A third patient, a 16-year-old boy, had signs of transverse myelitis and meningitis without immunodeficiency. All were South American citizens and had disseminated histoplasmosis. After antifungal treatment they recovered, although the third patient remained a wheelchair user. If pulmonary or miliary tuberculosis is suspected in a patient originating from South America, histoplasmosis should be considered. Oral ulcers and skin le

INTRODUCTION: Oral aphthae which are very commonly seen in an ENT practice should trigger a detailed investigation of the patient's history and a wide variety of differential diagnoses.
CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old male patient was admitted suffering from aphthous ulcers, fever, painful ankles and dysuria. Treatment with antibiotics was not successful. In addition to the above mentioned symptoms an exanthema and genital lesions arose during the hospital stay. After having excluded differential diagnoses a Morbus Behçet was diagnosed. The patient recovered after treatment with steroids and NSAID

There are presently seven known herpes viruses that infect humans. Those viruses are important in the fields of oral medicine and dentistry because they cause oral lesions, infect saliva, and cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections in patients whose immune systems are compromised by cancer chemotherapy, immunosuppressive drugs, or HIV infection. This article reviews the basic virology and clinical manifestations of the herpes viruses while highlighting the clinical aspects of herpes-related diseases important to dentistry.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic disease of unknown etiology, characterized by multiple organ involvement. Although its incidence is high in the Mediterranean countries and in Japan, BD is not often found in German patients. We therefore compared the epidemiological and clinical involvement of BD in 39 patients of German and of Mediterranean origin. The first manifestation was oral aphthosis in 72% of patients, followed by eye involvement (62%), skin lesions (25%), and arthritic problems (23%). Eventually, all our patients developed oral aphthosis. Whereas Germans had eye involvement in onl

BACKGROUND: Oral mucositis is a common complication of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) conditioning therapy. Sequelae consist of increased risk for infection, moderate to severe pain, compromised oral function, and bleeding. This study investigated helium-neon laser treatment for prevention of conditioning-induced oral mucositis in BMT patients. Patterns and severity of mucositis for specific conditioning drug regimens also were analyzed.
METHODS: Twenty patients received laser radiation to their oral mucosa, either left or right of midline. The contralateral side was sham-treated and serve
