Hindfoot varus and neurologic disorders.

Muscle imbalance from numerous underlying neurologic disorders can cause dynamic and static hindfoot varus deformity. Most etiologies are congenital, and therefore affect bone morphology and the shape of the foot during growth. Weak and strong muscle groups, bone deformity, and soft-tissue contractures have to be carefully assessed and considered for successful management. Because of the variety of the etiologies and the differences in presentation, treatment decisions in varus hindfoot caused by neurologic disorders must be individualized. Deformity correction includes release of soft tissue

Acute tongue abscess. Report of three cases.

Abscess of the tongue seems to be a rare clinical entity and is a potentially life-threatening infection. It may result in airway compromise and disseminated infection to other regions. Thus, a tongue abscess should be considered in all cases of acute tongue swelling, especially when host defences are severely impaired. In acute cases the diagnosis of tongue abscess can be reached clinically. Needle aspiration of pus collection is a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool, which provides considerable amelioration of symptoms. Three cases of tongue abscess are reported, along with discussion of

Radiographic features of central giant cell granuloma of the jaws in children.

The radiographic features of ten pediatric cases of central giant cell granuloma of the jaws were studied, using plain film radiography (PFR), computed tomography (CT), and a dental CT software program (DS). The radiologic features varied from ill-defined destructive lesions to a well-defined, multilocular appearance. Teeth or root displacement was found as the most consistent feature. Root resorption was rare. The features seen on CT were clearer than those seen on PFR. DS, by its visualization of the jaw in three plans - axial, panoramic, and buccolingual - provided useful information for de

Munchausen syndrome by proxy: unusual manifestations and disturbing sequelae.

Since the initial description of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP) (Meadow, 1977), numerous cases have been reported varying from as simple as the complaint of a nonexistent symptom to those as complicated as altered laboratory tests leading to the false diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (Orenstein & Wasserman, 1986; Rosenberg, 1987). We report three findings previously unreported: esophageal perforation, retrograde intussusception, and tooth loss. Bradycardia has been previously reported associated with suffocation (Meadow, 1984), but in our case may have been caused by carotid artery massage. W

Causes of mortality and parasites and incidental lesions in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from British waters.

Detailed post mortem examinations were carried out on 41 harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) found dead on the coast of the United Kingdom. The commonest causes of death were entanglement in fishing gear, and parasitic and bacterial pneumonia. Among the non-fatal conditions parasitoses of various organs were common and there was a very wide variety of other conditions. In total 295 diseases and other lesions were found, an average of 7.2 per animal.

The oral health in different groups of adults with mental handicaps attending Birmingham (UK) adult training centres.

The policies of normalisation and integration into the community of people with mental handicap have significant implications for dental care. Before dental services can be planned, the extent of the problem needs to be identified. A total of 382 people with mental handicap living in the community and attending day centres was examined; 52 of these people were edentulous. The mean age of the dentate adults was 30.9 years and the mean DMFT was 9.59. This was low in comparison with data available from national studies but when component parts of the DMF were evaluated it was apparent that far le

Spontaneous tooth exfoliation and osteonecrosis following a herpes zoster infection of the fifth cranial nerve.

Spontaneous exfoliation of teeth and osteonecrosis of the alveolar bone are rare complications of HZ infection that usually follow the acute phase of infection. Awareness of osteonecrosis associated with secondary HZ infection is important for early detection and treatment of the condition to prevent further complications, particularly in high-risk patients.

A study of selection criteria for intraoral dental radiography.

This study was undertaken to determine whether adequate diagnostic information could be obtained from a thorough clinical examination supplemented with a limited number of intraoral radiographs, the exact number of films determined in each case by applying a set of historical and/or clinical selection criteria. The 100 patients in this study required an average of 8.2 periapical radiographs (range, 0 to 18), in addition to posterior bitewing films to complete the diagnostic process. Later evaluation of complete-mouth surveys on these patients revealed that no cases of periodontitis, no periapi

Oral health in coeliac disease and cow's milk protein intolerance.

The oral health of 24 children and adolescents, 19 with coeliac disease (CD) and 5 with cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI) were compared with that of 24 randomly selected paired controls. Mineralisation disorders in the form of hypoplasias and/or opacities occurred in 74% of the cases of CD and 68% of their controls. All 5 cases with CMPI had mineralisation disorders, as did 2 of their controls. The disorders usually took the form of opacities, and both these and the hypoplasias were of a mild nature in all the groups. Serious hypoplasias did not occur at all. The caries status was, on aver

Surgery of the alveolar process as related to prosthesis.

The healing of an extraction wound is taken as starting-point, and complications and their avoidance are discussed insofar as they affect the shape of the alveolar process. Surgical methods of treating cysts and other tumours are reviewed, and it is shown how these may be carried out with little damage to the form of the denture-base. Every dentist should bear in mind subsequent prosthetic care whenever undertaking surgery of the oral cavity.
