Primary thyroid tuberculosis is a rare form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, with only a few cases recorded in the literature, and none of which had thyroid dysfunction. A 6-year-old child came to us with complains of fever and neck swelling for one month. A neck examination indicated a widespread enlargement in the thyroid region, which was more noticeable on the left side. Thyroid function tests indicated elevated TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and low T3, T4, indicating hypothyroidism. Contrast-enhanced computed CT revealed enlarged thyroid glands with a collection inside the left lobe.

Despite being a preventable and curable disease, tuberculosis, which mainly affects the lungs, is still a major cause of illness and death worldwide, with more than one million people dying from it each year. The affliction of the tonsils is uncommon, and isolated tonsillar tuberculosis in the absence of active pulmonary disease is an extremely rare condition that requires early and accurate diagnosis to provide proper management. Microscopic examination is one of the gold-standard tools for diagnosing tuberculosis. However, routine histopathological investigation for tonsillectomy specimens i

The diagnosis of paediatric pulmonary tuberculosis is difficult, especially in young infants who cannot expectorate sputum spontaneously. Breath testing has shown promise in diagnosing respiratory tract infections, but data on paediatric tuberculosis are limited. We performed a prospective cross-sectional study in Kenya in children younger than five years with symptoms of tuberculosis. We analysed exhaled breath with a hand-held battery-powered nose device. For data analysis, machine learning was applied using samples classified as positive (microbiologically confirmed) or negative (unlikely t

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is endemic in Colombia, the prevalence of its pulmonary form in immunocompetent hosts is high, and peritoneal compromise instead is rare and difficult to diagnose.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old female patient living in a rural area presented to the emergency department with constitutional and gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating, diarrhea, significant weight loss, nocturnal diaphoresis, and gradual onset of ascites with abdominal pain. Diagnostic workup, including paracentesis, a transvaginal ultrasound, and an abdominal CT scan, did not suggest malignan

Tuberculosis (TB) is a multisystemic disease caused most frequently by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Extrapulmonary TB has become more frequent with the advent of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as HIV can facilitate the infection with M. tuberculosis, especially during HIV seroconversion. Here, we present the case of a 22-year-old man, from Guinea-Bissau, with a history of untreated HIV who was admitted to the intensive care unit for respiratory failure needing mechanical ventilation. Pulmonary TB was diagnosed. His stay was complicated with a hemorrhagic shock due to traumatic urethral cath

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are species other than those belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and do not cause leprosy. NTM are generally free-living organisms that are ubiquitous in the environment. There have been more than 140 NTM species identified to-date. They can cause a wide range of infections, with pulmonary infections being the most frequent (65-90 %). There is growing evidence that the incidence of NTM lung diseases and associated hospitalizations are on the rise, mainly in regions with a low prevalence of tuberculosis. A crucial clinical problem remains the e

BACKGROUND: Nasal tuberculosis (NTB) is rare, but it can be caused by either a pulmonary disease or a retrograde involvement of the nose by lupus vulgaris of the facial skin. In this study, we present a case of NTB with an ulcerative lesion in her left nasal cavity.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56 years old woman presented with an ulcerative lesion in her left nasal cavity. The patient exhibited no clinical evidence of any systemic diseases. Peripheral leucocyte count (CBC) was normal but erythrocyte sedimentation rate was elevated. Mantoux' test elicited 25 mm reaction after 72 hr. Chest x-ray was n

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of successful surgical management of tubercular tracheal stenosis. There was no history of tracheostomy except for trauma management.
CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old man presented with breathing difficulty. He had previously sustained blunt chest injury, a fractured mandible and minor head injury in a traffic accident. Despite successful mandibular fracture fixation, he subsequently developed progressive breathing difficulty with stridor. The patient was treated successfully with surgical resection and bronchoplastic reconstruction. Post-operatively, endotracheal t

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of tuberculosis presenting with bilateral vocal fold palsy.
METHOD: Case report and discussion of ENT manifestations of tuberculosis.
CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old man presented with stridor and bilateral vocal fold palsies, and underwent an emergency tracheostomy. Intra-operatively, a mass was identified overlying the thyroid cartilage. Fine needle aspiration cytology of this mass showed well formed granulomas but negative Ziehl-Nielsen staining. Computed tomography showed the mass to be surrounding the thyroid cartilage, causing airway occlusion; pulmonary inf

INTRODUCTION: Isolated primary tubercular abscess is one of the rare forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. A greater awareness of this rare clinical entity may help in commencing specific evidence-based therapy quickly and preventing undue morbidity and mortality.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old man, of Asian origin, developed a hepatic tubercular abscess which was not associated with any pulmonary or gastrointestinal tract foci of tuberculosis. An ultrasonogram of the abdomen showed an abscess in the right lobe of his liver which was initially diagnosed as an amoebic liver abscess. Subseque

Despite the dramatic reduction in the incidence of laryngeal tuberculosis after the 1950s, the topic has now gained new interest due to claims that the disease has changed its clinical pattern. In the past, the typical patient was 20-40 years old with ulcerated laryngeal lesions, perichondritis, and advanced cavitary lung disease. We studied nine cases of laryngeal tuberculosis confirmed by histological examination. The microlaryngoscopy revealed tumour-like lesions and/or chronic non-specific laryngitis. There were no significant ulcerations or signs of perichondritis. The patients' ages rang

Pelvic tuberculosis was diagnosed in 72 patients analyzed during the years 1979-1989. Twenty-nine percent of the patients were over 40 years of age. The most common complaints were infertility (47.2%), abdominal or pelvic pain (32%) and abnormal uterine bleeding (11%). Only 2 patients had past or family history of pulmonary tuberculosis. The physical examination was normal in 31.6% of the patients. The chest X-ray was normal in 81% of the patients. Blocked tubes were present in 32 of 34 patients who had hysterosalpingograms. Even if the diagnosis can be made from a histopathologic examination,

The patient presented in this paper had been stable for 3 months after the induction of hemodialysis, when nausea, vomiting and hepatomegaly suddenly developed. A chest film revealed rush cardiomegaly, and massive pericardial effusion was demonstrated by echocardiography. One liter of hemorrhagic fluid was removed by pericardiocentesis and subsequent pericardial drainage under echocardiography. The patient received chemotherapy against pulmonary tuberculosis 30 years ago and calcification on chest film was apparent. Although sputum smear and pericardial effusion was negative for acid-fast orga

OBJECTIVE: The risk of transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in antiretroviral therapy (ART) clinics is recognized, particularly, when HIV and tuberculosis services are unified, but the degree of potential exposure to patients with infectious tuberculosis has not been measured. We aimed to quantify this clinic exposure.
METHODS: Over 1 year, we recorded all visits to a clinic in northern Malawi that offers HIV testing and counselling, HIV care, ART, and TB diagnostic and treatment services. We included patients and guardians, noting timing and reason for the visit, using a palm vein read

Tuberculosis remains a global health problem caused by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Numerous studies have established a close correlation between the development of tuberculosis and the roles of neutrophils. Recently, a distinct population of CD15+ granulocytes was found to be present in the peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) fraction in humans. This population of granulocytes, termed low-density granulocytes (LDGs), was reported to be elevated and associated with disease activity or severity in a number of different conditions including SLE, asthma and HIV infection.
