What's new and not so new on the antimicrobial horizon?

Despite increasing antimicrobial resistance and multiple drug resistance in clinical isolates of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, there are few novel antimicrobial agents in development. The few new agents that have been recently licensed have tended to have narrow spectra of activity, focused on Gram-positive pathogens, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This situation is rightly causing concern among clinicians and public health authorities worldwide. This article reviews available data on three new antibacterials currently in development. The cephal

Modification of patients' endogenous bacterial flora during hospitalization in a large teaching hospital in Naples.

The increasing attention addressed to methicillin-resistant staphylococci, vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and Extended Spectrum beta-Lactamases (ESbetaL)-producing enterobacteria is due to their etiologic role especially in nosocomial infections. In March 2001 we started an 8-month microbiological prospective surveillance of patients in the General Surgery, Orthopedic and Obstetric & Gynecology wards of the Azienda Universitaria Policlinico, 2nd University of Naples, Italy, to monitor the possible changes in endogenous flora during patients' hospital stay and the possible emergence of

Novel transposon Tn8026 acts as a global driver of transmissible linezolid resistance in Enterococcus via a linear plasmid.

Linezolid is a critical last-resort antimicrobial for multidrug-resistant Enterococcus faecium, particularly against vancomycin-resistant lineages where therapeutic options are severely limited. While resistance has historically arisen through de novo chromosomal mutations, the global emergence of transferable resistance mechanisms threatens to render more infections untreatable. Here, we characterise a recent (2023-2024) hospital-associated outbreak of linezolid-resistant E. faecium in Queensland, Australia. Although the cohort comprised a variety of sequence types, the outbreak was primarily

Resistance profiling and molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from goats in Korea.

Staphylococcus aureus is among the most common zoonotic pathogens that cause foodborne illnesses worldwide. The main objectives of the current study were therefore to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of S. aureus isolated from goats in Korea and to investigate the molecular characteristics of identified methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). In the study, 481 S. aureus isolates (431 from the nasal cavity and 50 from carcass) were recovered from 1146 carcasses and nasal swabs between July 2018 and January 2019. Approximately 82% and 72.6% of nasal and carcass isolates, respe

Freshwater environments as reservoirs of antibiotic resistant bacteria and their role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes.

Freshwater environments are susceptible to possible contamination by residual antibiotics that are released through different sources, such as agricultural runoffs, sewage discharges and leaching from nearby farms. Freshwater environment can thus become reservoirs where an antibiotic impact microorganisms, and is an important public health concern. Degradation and dilution processes are fundamental for predicting the actual risk of antibiotic resistance dissemination from freshwater reservoirs. This study reviews major approaches for detecting and quantifying antibiotic resistance bacteria (AR
