A case of juvenile-type paracoccidioidomycosis in a pregnant woman is reported. The disease pre-dated pregnancy and antifungal treatment was being administered when she became pregnant. A premature male infant was delivered with no evidence of infection. Microscopic examination of the placenta showed numerous Paracoccidioides brasiliensis yeast forms in the intervillous space, enmeshed in a macrophagic-phagocytic reaction, with damage of the trophoblastic layer. Placental transfer of specific P. brasiliensis antibodies was demonstrated.

A 69-year-old woman with Felty's syndrome developed necrotic skin lesions associated with disseminated Candida tropicalis infection. These lesions differed from the previously described erythematous macronodules of disseminated candidiasis, although histologically there was a dermal infiltrate of yeast and pseudohyphae. Clinically, they resembled ecthyma gangrenosum associated with Pseudomonas septicemia. We believe candidiasis should be included in the differential diagnosis of large necrotic skin lesions in the compromised host.

The effect of cholesterol and cholesterol esters on Pityrosporum cultures has been studied. A mixture of 0.25% to 2.0% of cholesterol:cholesteryl stearate:glyceryl monostearate (2.0:1.5:2.0) added to Bacto Yeast Morphology Agar plus oleic acid was able to induce hyphae in cultures of both Pityrosporum orbiculare and P. ovale. This result is discussed with respect to the cholesterol effect on cell membranes and to the occurrence of cholesterol and cholesterol esters in the scaling patches of Pityriasis versicolor.

Candida lusitaniae is a vaginal commensal. Cases of vaginitis, vulvovaginitis and recurrent vulvovaginitis caused by this yeast are very rare. In the oral cavity, C. lusitaniae causes stomatitis in immunocompromised patients. We describe a case of stomatitis and angular cheilitis caused by C. lusitaniae in a female patient with type 2 diabetes. The infection was most likely transmitted following genital-oral intercourse with the patient's girlfriend, who was affected by C. lusitaniae vulvovaginitis.

We report the first case of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients with peritonitis from Hortaea werneckii, a halotolerant black yeast-like fungus. The pathogen was confirmed by nucleotide sequences of internal transcribed spacer regions of the ribosomal RNA gene. A potential cause of this infection was tinea nigra on the patient's palm. Therefore, gloving might be advised during PD bag exchange in patients or caregivers who have an obvious lesion of the palm.

Candida auris is an emerging, multidrug-resistant yeast that is considered a threat to patients and health care facilities worldwide. As the incidence of C auris increases, the management of patients with C auris will expand beyond acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities. We discuss the infection prevention measures implemented to prevent the transmission of Candida auris on an inpatient acute rehabilitation unit while ensuring that appropriate patient care was provided.

Trichosporon asahii is a yeast that may cause systemic infection, especially in neutropenic patients. To our knowledge, only two cases of invasive infection with Trichosporon were previously described in liver transplant recipients. We describe an additional case of T. asahii infection after orthotopic liver transplantation in a non-neutropenic patient who had no known risk factor for invasive fungal infection, and died in spite of amphotericin B therapy.

Dietary copper-deficiency in rats produced a organ-specific decrease of copper content. This was paralleled by a decrease of the activity of the copper-enzyme superoxide dismutase. In liver such a decrease is partially due to the existence of an apo-form of superoxide dismutase, which can be reactivated by addition of exogenous copper to tissue extracts. These results demonstrate in vivo that superoxide dismutase is post-translationally modulated by copper in higher vertebrates as previously found for yeast and mammalian cells in culture.

A 65-year-old woman with disseminated histoplasmosis underwent resection of an atherosclerotic abdominal aortic aneurysm. Yeast forms of Histoplasma capsulatum were present in the aneurysm. Surgical resection and revascularization with a Dacron graft followed by systemic amphotericin B therapy and chronic ketoconazole suppressive therapy have resulted in a patient without symptoms 15 months postoperatively. It is important to be aware of the potential for artherosclerotic aortic aneurysm involvement by H. capsulatum.

Blastomycosis is an uncommon fungal disease which may mimic carcinoma of the larynx. Physical examination may show a granular appearance early in the disease with progression to laryngeal fibrosis. Histologic examination usually shows pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, microabscesses, and giant cells. The broad-based budding yeast organisms may be easily overlooked unless special stains are used. Two cases of laryngeal blastomycosis which were originally treated as carcinoma are reported.

Exclusion diets may have a practical place in determining the precipitating dietary factors in certain clinical conditions. We present an exclusion diet which is based on the exclusion of food commonly known to cause food allergies, and the exclusion of food which contains salicylates, benzoates, tartrazine, yeast, and penicillin. This provided a basis for challenge with these additives and natural chemicals. Preliminary information in urticaria suggests a use for this diet in some allergic conditions.

Some substituted dihydroxybenzenes have been examined for suppression of the yeast-induced inflammatory reaction in the rat paw. This anti-inflammatory activity is greatest in those compounds derived from resorcinol and in particular the halogenated 5-methylresorcinols. The significance of the internuclear distance between the hydroxyl groups in the meta-position to each other in resorcinol and the importance of the enhanced activity due to the halogen atom(s) is discussed. In this series the toxicity and activity could not be divorced.

Phenotypic plasticity is a common strategy adopted by fungal pathogens to adapt to diverse host environments. Dequalinium is a quaternary ammonium salt. From about 30 years Dequalinium (D.C.) was used in the treatment of the initial respiratory organs infections. It can be given orally and topically yet it cannot be given systemically cause its probable systemic toxicity. D.C. has a wide range of antimicrobial activity that is extended to Gram positive, Gram negative bacteria, protozoa and yeast. Its mechanism of action is directed to the cytoplasmatic membrane where D.C. caused its damage and consequently release of cellular components.
