Contralateral cochlear effects of ipsilateral damage: no evidence for interaural coupling.

Lesion studies of the olivocochlear efferents have suggested that feedback via this neuronal pathway normally maintains an appropriate binaural balance in excitability of the two cochlear nerves (Darrow et al., 2006). If true, a decrease in cochlear nerve output from one ear, due to conductive or sensorineural hearing loss, should change cochlear nerve response in the opposite ear via modulation in olivocochlear feedback. To investigate this putative efferent-mediated interaural coupling, we measured cochlear responses repeatedly from both ears in groups of mice for several weeks before, and f

Avoidance learning facilitates temporal processing in the primary auditory cortex.

The primary auditory cortex is now known to be involved in learning and memory, as well as auditory perception. For example, spectral tuning often shifts toward or to the frequency of the conditioned stimulus during associative learning. As previous research has focused on tonal frequency, less is known about how learning might alter temporal parameters of response in the auditory cortex. This study addressed the effects of learning on the fidelity of temporal processing. Adult male rats were trained to avoid shock that was signaled by an 8.0 kHz tone. A novel control group received non-contin

Neural responses to auditory stimulus deviance under threat of electric shock revealed by spatially-filtered magnetoencephalography.

Stimulus novelty or deviance may be especially salient in anxiety-related states due to sensitization to environmental change, a key symptom of anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We aimed to identify human brain regions that show potentiated responses to stimulus deviance during anticipatory anxiety. Twenty participants (14 men) were presented a passive oddball auditory task in which they were exposed to uniform auditory stimulation of tones with occasional deviations in tone frequency, a procedure that elicits the mismatch negativity (MMN) and its magnetic counter

Test-retest reliability of wideband reflectance measures in infants under screening and diagnostic test conditions.

OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this study was to examine the test-retest reliability of wideband reflectance (WBR) measures collected from infants in screening and diagnostic hearing test environments. In addition, the results of WBR testing for infants who passed and failed otoacoustic emission (OAE) screening were examined to determine whether these measures distinguished between the two groups. DESIGN: Repeated WBR measures were collected from two groups of infants, one group tested in an outpatient hearing screening setting and the other group in a diagnostic test setting. For a total of 127

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: use of cognitive evoked potential (P300) to predict treatment response.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of P300 in predicting treatment response to medicines in patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and to confirm previous reports that 31-electrode mean auditory P300 amplitude (AA) predicts response to atomoxetine; and right fronto-central to parietal AA ratio predicts response to methylphenidate. METHODS: Efficacy and P300 data from 58 children with ADHD enrolled in a double-blind crossover study using atomoxetine and methylphenidate were analyzed. Robust response was defined as 60% decrease from baseline in the ADHD rating scale. Respons

Validity of a new feedback method for the VEMP test.

CONCLUSIONS: We used a feedback method, based on a blood pressure manometer with inflatable cuff, to control the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) contraction. To obtain comparable left-right VEMP responses, it is necessary (1) to determine which cuff pressures on both sides yield identical mean rectified voltage (MRV) values of the SCM contraction and (2) to apply these cuff pressures during the VEMP test. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the SCM muscle contraction variability on the VEMP variables when applying the feedback method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects pushed with their ja

Serotonin and dopamine transporter availabilities correlate with the loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Brain monoaminergic function is involved in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. The loudness dependence (LD) of the N1/P2 component of auditory evoked potentials has been proposed as a noninvasive indicator of central serotonergic function, whereas single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and [123I]beta-CIT can be used to visualize both serotonin (SERT) and dopamine transporters (DAT). The aim of the study was to correlate LD and SPECT measures in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, a condition with evidence for a serotonergic dysfunction. A total of 10 subjects re

Maternal influenza infection causes marked behavioral and pharmacological changes in the offspring.

Maternal viral infection is known to increase the risk for schizophrenia and autism in the offspring. Using this observation in an animal model, we find that respiratory infection of pregnant mice (both BALB/c and C57BL/6 strains) with the human influenza virus yields offspring that display highly abnormal behavioral responses as adults. As in schizophrenia and autism, these offspring display deficits in prepulse inhibition (PPI) in the acoustic startle response. Compared with control mice, the infected mice also display striking responses to the acute administration of antipsychotic (clozapin

Essential role of BETA2/NeuroD1 in development of the vestibular and auditory systems.

BETA2/NeuroD1 is a bHLH transcription factor that is expressed during development in the mammalian pancreas and in many locations in the central and peripheral nervous systems. During inner ear ontogenesis, it is present in both sensory ganglion neurons and sensory epithelia. Although studies have shown that BETA2/NeuroD1 is important in the development of the hippocampal dentate gyrus and the cerebellum, its functions in the peripheral nervous system and in particular in the inner ear are unclear. Mice carrying a BETA2/NeuroD1 null mutation exhibit behavioral abnormalities suggestive of an in

Targeted mutation of the gene for cellular glutathione peroxidase (Gpx1) increases noise-induced hearing loss in mice.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress have been implicated in cochlear injury following loud noise and ototoxins. Genetic mutations that impair antioxidant defenses would be expected to increase cochlear injury following acute insults and to contribute to cumulative injury that presents as age-related hearing loss. We examined whether genetically based deficiency of cellular glutathione peroxidase, a major antioxidant enzyme, increases noise-induced hearing loss in mice. Two-month-old "knockout" mice with a targeted inactivating mutation of the gene coding for glutathione peroxida

Effects of noise on inferior colliculus evoked potentials and cochlear anatomy in young and aged chinchillas.

Like many aging humans, the aging chinchilla tends to lose high-frequency sensitivity at a faster rate than low-frequency sensitivity. This feature, combined with its excellent low-frequency hearing, makes the chinchilla attractive as an animal model for studying the relationship between noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and age-related hearing loss (AHL). In the present study, we examined susceptibility to noise in 15 aged (10-15 years old) and 15 young chinchillas. Two levels of noise were used, with the aim of determining whether age-related differences exist in the magnitude and rate of re

Effects of hearing loss, sex, age, noise exposure and listening skills on the detection of amplitude modulation of a 4-kHz carrier.

It has been suggested that amplitude-modulation detection (AMD) thresholds for a 4-kHz carrier presented in a threshold-equalizing noise at a high overall level might be an indicator of hidden hearing disorder (HHD) produced by noise exposure. However, it is not clear if this is the case when HHD co-occurs with audiometric hearing loss. Here, AMD thresholds for such a stimulus were measured for 88 participants with a wide range of ages and hearing losses. Data were gathered on lifetime noise exposure, quantified by the Noise Exposure Structured Interview, and factors that might influence liste

Sleep recovers prior to hearing after a single high-intensity noise exposure in mice.

The acute effects of a single noise event on sleep and its recovery dynamics remain poorly understood. This study established mouse models of acute noise exposure using single 2-hour sessions of moderate- (80 dB SPL) or high-intensity (100 dB SPL) octave-band noise (8-16 kHz). Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds and 24-hour polysomnography were assessed serially to evaluate the impact on hearing and sleep architecture, as well as their temporal recovery. Exposure to 80 dB SPL noise produced no significant threshold shifts or sleep disturbances 2 days later. In contrast, 100 dB SPL exp

Ageing and the auditory nerve: Hearing sensitivity and endbulb synapses.

Age-related hearing loss impairs speech understanding for socialization and music appreciation for enjoyment, both of which compromise quality of life and can lead to cognitive decline. It has previously been shown that while standard audiometric hearing thresholds can remain normal over time, speech understanding in noise is more difficult and there is the emergence of tinnitus. These specific hearing difficulties are not revealed by standard audiograms but we now know that they have been attributed to loss of high threshold auditory nerve fibers caused by the disappearance of terminal ending

No association between idiopathic hidden hearing loss and behavioral adaptation to noise in humans.

Adaptation to noise refers to the improvement in word-in-noise recognition as words are delayed a few hundred milliseconds in the noise. This adaptation is thought to reflect adjustments of the dynamic range of auditory neurons to the most frequent noise level. Evidence from a mouse model suggests that hidden hearing loss (HHL), a diminished auditory nerve response without a hearing loss, selectively impairs neural dynamic range adaptation to loud sound environments. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether HHL is associated with poor behavioral adaptation to loud noise in speec

Adaptive Strategies of Single-Sided Deaf Cochlear-Implant Users Revealed Through Resting State Activity: an Auditory PET Brain Imaging Study.

Brain plasticity refers to the brain's ability to reorganize its structure or function in response to experiences, learning, and environmental influences. This phenomenon is particularly significant in individuals with deafness, as the brain adapts to compensate for the lack of auditory stimulation. The aim of this study is to investigate whether cochlear implantation can restore a normal pattern of brain activation following auditory stimulation in cases of asymmetric hearing loss. We used a PET-scan technique to assess brain activity after cochlear implantation, specifically during an audito

Data-Driven Approach for Auditory Profiling and Characterization of Individual Hearing Loss.

Pure-tone audiometry still represents the main measure to characterize individual hearing loss and the basis for hearing-aid fitting. However, the perceptual consequences of hearing loss are typically associated not only with a loss of sensitivity but also with a loss of clarity that is not captured by the audiogram. A detailed characterization of a hearing loss may be complex and needs to be simplified to efficiently explore the specific compensation needs of the individual listener. Here, it is hypothesized that any listener's hearing profile can be characterized along two dimensions of dist

Early cortical metabolic rearrangement related to clinical data in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Results in studies concerning cortical changes in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) are not homogeneous, in particular due to the different neuroimaging techniques implemented and the diverse stages of ISSNHL studied. Considering the recent advances in state-of-the-art positron emission tomography (PET) cameras, the aim of this study was to gain more insight into the neuroanatomical differences associated with the earliest stages of unilateral ISSNHL and clinical-perceptual performance changes. After an audiological examination including the mean auditory threshold (mean AT
