West Nile (WN) virus is a common arbovirosis in sub-Saharian Africa. It has occasionally caused epidemics or epizootics in horses in Mediterranean regions and southern Europe. The virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes (primarily the Culex species) that are infected by biting viremic birds. Infections in humans are usually asymptomatic. Recently, however, a growing number of cases involving central nervous system manifestations and deaths have been reported in elderly people in Algeria and Romania. Deaths have also been recorded in migrating birds in zones where the virus is emerging. An

Nicaragua has the lowest prevalence of AIDS in Central America. In other countries where AIDS is more prevalent, the first epidemic of asymptomatic infections with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the second of clinical cases of AIDS have been followed by a third epidemic of fear and discrimination. In December 1989 a study was conducted to investigate knowledge and attitudes about AIDS in a sample of 287 adults in Managua. Most of the interviewees had heard of the disease from newspapers and television, and more than 90% understood how HIV was principally transmitted. However, between o

Experimental studies were undertaken to ascertain the vector competence of a strain of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) collected in New Orleans, LA, (Gentilly strain) for an epizootic (Trinidad donkey) strain of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus. This strain of Ae. albopictus was significantly more susceptible to infection with VEE virus than were any of the four strains tested previously, including two from North America and two from South America. Likewise, dissemination (148 of 180) (82%) and transmission (40 of 88) (45%) rates were significantly higher in the Gentilly strain than in

An exotic strain of Trypanosoma cruzi recovered from Triatoma dimidiata from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, was shown by isoenzyme studies to be closely related to the Miles' zymodeme 1 and laboratory reference strain Tehuantepec. It was injected into Swiss random-bred ICR mice. Clean Triatoma protracta nymphs and adults, which had been captured in Winters, California, fed on inoculated mice and were then examined over a 15-month period. Their feces contained multiplying epimastigote and infective trypomastigote forms of T. cruzi. This shows that exotic strains of T. cruzi can develop and survive for

This article discusses two tick-borne illnesses: Powassan encephalitis, a rare cause of central nervous system infection caused by the Powassan virus, and Colorado tick fever, an acute febrile illness caused by the Colorado tick fever virus common to the Rocky Mountain region of North America.

Numerous types of envenomations may be encountered by health care workers depending on where in North America they work. Clinicians should be familiar with the animals in their region that may lead to envenomation.A rational approach with use of poison center or medical toxicology consultation services ensures that cases are managed appropriately.

The lateral ankle complex is the most frequently injured single structure in athletes, consisting of 38% to 45% of all injuries. One-sixth of all sports injury loss time is from ankle sprains. In North America, ankle inversion sprains are considered "de rigeur" for basketball participation.

This case report describes a 50-year-old man from South America with AIDS who developed disseminated histoplasmosis with focal lymph node involvement. Treatment with ketoconazole was initially successful. Six weeks after cessation of ketoconazole he died of what was thought to be relapse of histoplasmosis.

We describe a case of Reiter's disease in an HLA-B27 positive black woman after infection with Salmonella typhimurium. Although reactive arthropathy following Salmonella infections is not unusual, Reiter's disease is rare. This may be the second such case in the English literature, and the first reported in North America.

Curly top disease (CTD) affects sugar beet, tomato and other crops, resulting in stunted plants with severely curled leaves and reduced yields. The disease occurs worldwide and is caused by geographically associated monopartite geminiviruses transmitted mostly by leafhoppers. However, the aetiology of CTD in South America remains unknown because the disease disappeared in the 1950s. Here, we describe how the chance finding of tomato plants with CTD-like symptoms in Brazil in 2016 and high-throughput sequencing helped identify a novel ~2.6 kb geminivirus DNA associated with curly top disease in

The family Morchellaceae contains four truffle-forming genera: Fischerula, Imaia, Kalapuya, and Leucangium. In North America, some Imaia, Kalapuya, and Leucangium species are highly regarded gourmet edible fungi. In this study, we address longstanding questions about the evolution, systematics, and trophic mode of these fungal genera. We used high-throughput sequencing and a custom genome assembly pipeline to sequence and assemble 41 new genomes of epigeous and hypogeous Morchellaceae genera and outgroup taxa from the sister family Discinaceae. Phylogenomic reconstructions based on high-qualit
