Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as schizophrenia (SCZ), Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), learning disabilities, and intellectual disabilities (ID), are highly prevalent. One significant genetic factor associated with NDDs is copy number variations (CNVs), which are structural changes in the genome that involve deletions or duplications of DNA segments. CNVs are known to significantly elevate the risk of developing NDDs and are increasingly being studied for their role in these conditions. While CNVs encompass a wide range of genetic alt

Administration of amphetamine and methamphetamine can elicit psychiatric adverse effects at acute administration, binge use, withdrawal, and chronic use. Most troublesome of these are psychotic states and aggressive behavior, but a large variety of undesirable changes in cognition and affect can be induced. Adverse effects occur more frequently with higher dosages and long-term use. They can subside over time but some persist long-term. Multiple alterations in the gray and white matter of the brain assessed as changes in tissue volume or metabolism, or at molecular level, have been associated

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) often co-occur, partly because they share risk factors. In this international multicenter study, risk factors for BPD were examined for SUD patients. In total, 1,205 patients were comprehensively examined by standardized interviews and questionnaires on psychiatric diagnosis and risk factors, and it was found that 1,033 (85.7%) had SUDs without BPD (SUD) and 172 (14.3%) had SUD with BPD (SUD + BPD). SUD + BPD patients were significantly younger, more often females and more often diagnosed with comorbid adult attention def

By using four different scales that measure tic severity in Tourette's syndrome, three independent judges concurrently evaluated their validity and interjudge reliability in 20 affected individuals. The Yale Global Tic Severity Scale, Tourette's Syndrome Severity Scale, Tourette's Syndrome-Clinical Global Impression Scale, and the Hopkins Motor and Vocal Tic Scale were equally effective in determining overall severity and showed good interrater reliability. Both historical information and direct observation of the subject were shown to have a significant contribution towards the overall assess

BACKGROUND: Parental prenatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are linked to child neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), but evaluations of the magnitude and mechanisms of this association are limited. This study estimates the strength of the association and whether it is impacted by genetic and environmental factors.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, CENTRAL, PsycINFO, OVID, and Google Scholar was performed for articles published from January 1988 to September 2025. Of 2,420 articles screened, 74 met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analyses were conducted on 21 studies, and 53 were inclu

OBJECTIVE: Many patients with Graves' disease (GD) also suffer from mental disorders in clinical practice, but their causal relationship remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the causal relationship between GD and common mental disorders using a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR)approach.
METHODS: We derived genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for common mental disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium consortium. GWAS data for

BACKGROUND: DSM-5 Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED) are rare, understudied, and controversial disorders.
METHODS: Comorbidity in children diagnosed with RAD or DSED was compared with comorbidity in ADHD and autism to determine if RAD/DSED comorbidity differed from that for the two most common disorders in child psychiatric clinics. Samples included 4-17-year-olds, 20 with RAD and/or DSED, 933 with autism, and 895 with ADHD. Children with RAD/DSED were removed from their neglectful environments at a mean of 4 years and were a mean 10 years wh

BACKGROUND: A profile of Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL) T-scores>or=70 on the attention problems, aggression, and anxious/depressed subscales has been proposed to identify juvenile bipolar disorder(JBD). We tested this hypothesis in a population-based sample.
METHODS: Data for this analysis come from a birth-records-based twin sample having semi-structured interview and CBCL data (N=1,346). We compared prevalence of DSM-IV psychiatric disorders and suicidal behaviors in CBCL-JBD and non-CBCL-JBD subjects. Twin modeling assessed genetic and environmental contributions to CBCL-JBD. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in patients with Turner syndrome (TS) is an uncommon neuropsychiatric presentation that has not been well characterized in the scientific literature. Though no clear psychiatric component is syndromic to TS, the clinical manifestations of certain neuropsychiatric disorders, including mood, anxiety and eating disorders, have all been well documented in patients with TS. However, the presence of OCD in these patients has not been previously described. This report details a 19-year-old TS patient who presented with OCD since the age of 13, comorbid with several

Co-occurring autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been associated with poorer social skills. Most studies examining the association of ADHD symptoms and social skills in autism employ categorical and cross-sectional designs, which provide a narrow view of the development of ADHD symptoms. Using group-based trajectory modeling, we identified five trajectories of caregiver-reported attention problems in an inception cohort of autistic children (N = 393) followed from age 2-5 years (T1) to age 10.5-11 years (T8): Low-Stable (LS; 15.5% of participants), Low-Decreasing (L

Gambling disorder is the only behavioral addiction recognized as a clinical disorder in DSM-5, and Internet gaming disorder is included as a condition requiring further research. ICD-11 categorizes gambling and gaming disorders as disorders due to addictive behaviors. Additional behavioral addictions may include compulsive sexual behavior disorder, compulsive buying-shopping disorder, and problematic use of social media. This narrative review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding these five (potential) disorders due to addictive behaviors. All five (potential) disorders are clini

Understanding and improving the psychosocial adjustments (e.g., quality of life, depression) and treatment outcomes (e.g., adherence, beliefs about treatments) of people with mental disorders are major health issues. The self-regulation model (SRM) postulates that illness representations play a central role on adjustment and treatment of people with physical illnesses. Recently, the SRM has been used with people with mental disorders. However, the manifestations of somatic and psychiatric disorders can be very different. Therefore, the use of SRM in the field of mental health is very complex.

The recurrent 16p11.2 microdeletion is characterized by developmental delays and a wide spectrum of congenital anomalies. It has been well reported that individuals with this ∼593-kb interstitial deletion have an increased susceptibility toward the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Abnormalities of the eye and ocular adnexa are also commonly associated findings seen in individuals with the 16p11.2 microdeletion syndrome, although these ophthalmic manifestations have not been well characterized. We conducted an extensive literature review to highlight the eye features in patients with the 16p11.2

Patients frequently use medications simultaneously for different complaints, without being aware of the interactions these products may have. An example of this is the simultaneous use of corticosteroids and medications for depression, defiant or aggressive behaviour. Research has also indicated that corticosteroids lower serotonin levels. However, lowered serotonin levels may result in depression, aggression and other psychological conditions. These secondary complaints, caused by the corticosteroids and other products that lower serotonin levels, may then be treated with selective serotonin

The brain's process of creating neural networks that affect functionality or performance is referred to as neurodevelopment. A person's capacity to learn and remember, pay attention, regulate their emotions, socialize, exercise and self-control are just a few of the cognitive and motor abilities that can be affected by abnormal brain development. Numerous neurodevelopmental diseases have been functionally related to abnormalities in innate immune signaling networks. Innate immunity is in charge of the defense of humans against pathogens and tissue damage by triggering inflammation, mainly thro

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disorder (SLD), and their comorbidity are associated with weaknesses in cognitive efficiency; however, the diagnostic utility of WISC-V index patterns remains unclear. This study examined WISC-V cognitive profiles in children with newly diagnosed ADHD, SLD, ADHD-SLD comorbidity, and typically developing controls (N = 133; 6-16 years), with emphasis on Working Memory and Processing Speed. Age-controlled ANCOVAs evaluated group differences across primary and composite indices, including the General Ability Index (GAI), the Cognit

The 48,XXYY syndrome sex chromosome variation is a genetic condition defined by the presence of an extra X and Y chromosome, confirmed with karyotype testing. Despite their similarities, 48,XXYY syndrome is distinct from Klinefelter syndrome on account of several factors, including psychiatric ones. This case report focuses on an individual with a history of 48,XXYY syndrome, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who had multiple psychiatric presentations for worsening depression and suicidal ideation. This case explores some of the comorbid psychi

Patients suffering from substance use disorder, including for instance benzodiazepines, may have comorbidity with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Centrally acting stimulants play an important role in the treatment of ADHD. Before such treatment can be initiated, withdrawal of benzodiazepines may be necessary. Urine testing is the preferred method for monitoring adherence in benzodiazepine withdrawal, but there is a lack of studies reporting detection time. Here, we report a case of a 30-year-old woman with substance use disorder and ADHD who had detectable metabolites of diaze

OBJECTIVE: Genome-wide association studies have identified multiple genomic regions associated with anorexia nervosa. No genome-wide studies of other eating disorders, such as bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder, have been performed, despite their substantial heritability. Exploratively, we aimed to identify traits that are genetically associated with binge-type eating disorders.
METHOD: We calculated genome-wide polygenic scores for 269 trait and disease outcomes using PRSice v2.2 and their association with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder in up to 640 cases

Childhood conduct disorder (CD) and adult psychopathic traits according to the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R) were the closest psychiatric covariates to repeated violent crimes and aggression among offenders under forensic psychiatric investigation in Sweden. As psychopathy is not included in the present psychiatric diagnostic systems, we compared total and factor PCL-R scores to Axis I disorders, including childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorders, and to Axis II personality disorders, to establish the convergence of psychopathic traits with other psychiatric diagnoses, and to identif
