Residing in a Food Desert Is Associated with an Increased Risk of Complications after Breast Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Food deserts (FDs) are areas characterized by high rates of food insecurity, limited access to healthy food, and a high concentration of unhealthy food options. This study evaluated the comorbidity burden in patients residing in FDs and assessed the impact of residing in an FD on postoperative outcomes following mastectomy. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients undergoing mastectomy between January of 2014 and November of 2018. Low food access (LFA) was defined as an area where residents lived more than 1 mile (urban) or more than 10 miles (rural) from the near

Enhancing cardiorespiratory fitness and quality of life in high-grade glioma through an intensive exercise intervention during chemotherapy: Proof of concept.

BACKGROUND: High-grade glioma (HGG) patients experience enormous disease burden both from tumor- and treatment-related symptoms. Exercise can improve physical fitness and quality of life (QoL); yet experience in neuro-oncology, especially with high-intensity exercise, remains limited. This study evaluated feasibility, safety, and efficacy of the intensive, structured 16-week strength and endurance program, "Active in Neuro-Oncology" (ActiNO) for HGG patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: In this prospective, oligocentric, single-arm proof-of-concept trial, 54 HGG patients participated in

Qualitative systematic review on the lived experience of functional neurological disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a complex disorder, recently attracting much research into aetiology and treatment. However, there is limited research on the patient's lived experience. This paper addresses this gap to ask: 'What is the subjective life experience of adult patients living with FND?' METHODS: From 1980 to 2020, Medline, PsycInfo, Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, CINAHL and Embase were searched for English language qualitative adult research. The disciplines used general medicine, psychiatry, physiotherapy, nursing, neurology, psychosomatic medicine and occu

Long-term Metabolic Outcomes Post-Simultaneous Pancreas-Kidney Transplantation in Recipients With Type 1 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous pancreas-kidney (SPK) transplantation is an effective treatment option for type 1 diabetes mellitus and concurrent end-stage kidney disease. However, the diabetogenic effects of immunosuppression can counteract the beneficial effects of sustained normoglycemia. Long-term metabolic trends that reflect cardiovascular risk are reported poorly in the literature. METHODS: A total of 500 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus receiving SPK transplants at a single center with at least 2-y follow-up were evaluated retrospectively. Metabolic parameters and allograft function w

Impact of Psychosocial Risk Factors on Acute Clinical Outcomes Following Colectomy: A National Perspective.

BackgroundA growing body of work has considered the significance of patients' psychosocial support and surrounding socioeconomic milieu on surgical outcomes. The presence of such psychosocial risk factors (PSRFs) may define both access to and engagement with care, particularly for access-sensitive conditions, such as colon resection. Yet, the impact of PSRF on outcomes following colectomy remains to be delineated.MethodsWe queried the Nationwide Readmissions Database for all adults undergoing elective/emergent colectomy for benign neoplasms, colon cancer, diverticular disease, or inflammatory

Ibrutinib lead-in followed by venetoclax plus ibrutinib for relapsed/refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia: the SAKK 34/17 trial.

The combination of ibrutinib plus venetoclax (IV) in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) treatment leverages their complementary mechanisms of action. Studies investigating IV typically begin with a short initial course of ibrutinib, followed by venetoclax introduction for a limited duration, typically 12 months. The Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK) 34/17 study is a single-arm, multicenter, phase 2 trial evaluating the effectiveness of a modified IV schedule in patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) CLL. No prior exposure to BTK or BCL2 inhibitors was allowed. The lead-in phase

Hippocampal mitophagy alterations in MAPT-associated frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism.

The enzyme pair PINK1 and PRKN together orchestrates a cytoprotective mitophagy pathway that selectively tags damaged mitochondria with phospho-serine 65 ubiquitin (pS65-Ub) and directs them for autophagic-lysosomal degradation (mitophagy). We previously demonstrated a significant accumulation of pS65-Ub signals in autopsy brains of sporadic Lewy body disease and Alzheimer's disease cases, which strongly correlated with early tau pathology. In this study, we extended our analysis to a series of pathologically confirmed cases of frontotemporal dementia with parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17

Toward Scalable Electromyography in Oncology: A Narrative Review of Normalization Challenges and Machine Learning Innovations.

OBJECTIVES: Electromyography (EMG) is increasingly applied in oncology to monitor neuromuscular impairment, treatment toxicities, and rehabilitation outcomes. However, reliance on maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) normalization limits scalability, as many patients cannot perform safe and reliable MVCs due to fatigue, pain, or treatment-induced impairments. This narrative review evaluates the feasibility and clinical utility of machine learning (ML)-predicted MVCs as an alternative normalization method in oncology care. METHODS: Peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025 were ret

Resting lung volume phenotypes in COPD: implications for exertional dyspnoea and exercise tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Lung volumes and dyspnoea vary markedly at a given forced expiratory volume in 1 s in COPD. We aim to investigate whether hyperinflation (high total lung capacity (TLC)) adds value to simpler inspiratory capacity (IC) in predicting mechanical-ventilatory impairment and exertional dyspnoea in these patients. METHODS: 345 patients with mild to very severe COPD (190 men) underwent incremental cycling with measurements of dyspnoea (0-10 Borg) and operating lung volumes. Resting volumes by body plethysmography were compared with the 2021 z-score-based Global Lung Initiative standards.

Development and validation of a novel glucolipid metabolism-related nomogram to enhance the predictive performance for osteoporosis complications in prediabetic and diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is the most prevalent metabolic disorder worldwide, imposing a significant economic burden on society. Prediabetes has not received as much attention as diabetes, and among its complications, osteoporosis has been relatively under-researched compared to cardiovascular disease. Recent studies have identified nine indices related to glucose and lipid metabolism that may enhance osteoporosis risk assessment in diabetic and prediabetic individuals. The research examined the osteoporosis risk prediction potential of these indices and developed a nomogram to enhance predictive p
