OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the obstetric gel shortens the second stage of labor and exerts a protective effect on the perineum.
METHOD: A total of 251 nulliparous women with singleton low-risk pregnancies in vertex position at term were recruited. A total of 228 eligible women were randomly assigned to Group A, without obstetric gel use, or to Group B, obstetric gel use, i.e., intermittent application into the birth canal during vaginal examinations, starting at the early first stage of labor (prior to 4 cm dilation) and ending with delivery.
RESULTS: A total of 183 cases were analyzed.

To establish a new formulation technology for the nasal delivery of peptide and protein drugs, we examined whether a mucolytic agent, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), could enhance the nasal absorption of a powder form of salmon calcitonin, a model peptide drug. We used ethylcellulose as an inert water-insoluble excipient. Various test formulations were prepared, and the effects on nasal absorbability were evaluated in rats and dogs. The paper deals with the formulation of a potential local anaesthetic--pentacaine into appropriate drug forms. To be more specific, the pentacaine is studies from the two aspects. First, the influence of auxiliary substances and their respective concentrations on the both onset and duration of local anaesthetic effects of pentacaine solutions. Second, the liberation of pentacaine from hydrogels and suppositories. Based on the obtained results, optimal auxiliary substances together with their optimal concentration are recommended.

Adenylate kinase (AK) modulates the interconversion of adenine nucleotides (AMP + adenosine triphosphate----2 ADP). We evaluated the fifth kindred with hereditary erythrocyte (RBC) AK deficiency. In a patient with nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia, a hexokinase deficiency was detected in the red cells (residual activity about 25% of normal) and in blood platelets (20%-35% of normal activity).
