We have applied our multimarker approach of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and free-beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) for Down syndrome screening to multiple gestations to assess its efficacy for improved detection of twin and triplet pregnancies. UNLABELLED: The inhibin concentration in 131 samples of human follicular fluid obtained from 31 women undergoing ovarian hyperstimulation for in vitro fertilization was measured using specific double antibody radioimmunoassay. We used the synthetic 1-32-alpha-inhibin as standard and radioiodinated 1-32-Tyr-alpha-inhibin as tracer. Antibodies were raised in rabbits by immunization with the synthetic peptide. The potential of nonlaser videolaparoscopic surgery for ectopic gestation in a metropolitan public hospital was assessed by the review of the last 16 consecutive women presenting to the author with either a ruptured or an unruptured ectopic pregnancy. The presence of immunosuppressive early pregnancy factor (EPF) in the maternal serum has so far been associated with gestation. Its presence in the serum of women with gestational trophoblastic tumors was investigated. Plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone were measured throughout the luteal phase in 21 anovulatory patients who developed ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) during menotropin induction of ovulation. Forty-five patients with metastatic germ cell tumour were treated with chemotherapy. Complete remission was achieved in 63% of all cases and in 65% of patients whose primary tumour arose in the testis or ovary. A 10-month-old girl with sexual precocity of recent onset was found to have elevated levels of estrogens, progesterone and androgen precursors, associated with a polycystic left ovary.
