BACKGROUND: Special events are common community-based strategies for health promotion. This paper presents findings from a systematic literature review on the impact of special events to promote breast, cervical or colorectal cancer education and screening.
METHODS: Articles in English that focused on special events involving breast, cervical, and/or colorectal cancer conducted in the U.S. and published between January 1990 and December 2011 were identified from seven databases: Ovid, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Sociological Abstract, Cochrane Libraries, and EconLit. OBJECTIVE: The cancer risks associated with patient exposure to radiation from medical imaging have become a major topic of debate. The higher doses necessary for technologies such as CT and the increasing utilization of these technologies further increase medical radiation exposure to the population. Furthermore, the use of CT for population-based cancer screening continues to be explored for common malignancies such as lung cancer and colorectal cancer. Given the known carcinogenic effects of ionizing radiation, this warrants evaluation of the balance between the benefit of early cancer dete

PURPOSE: Little is known about cancer survivors' receptivity to being contacted through cancer registries for research and health promotion efforts. We sought to (1) determine breast and colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors' responsiveness to a mailed survey using an academic medical center's cancer registry, (2) assess whether responsiveness varied according to sociodemographic characteristics and medical history, and (3) examine the prevalence and correlates of respondents' awareness and willingness to be contacted through the state cancer registry for future research studies.
METHODS: Stage 0

BACKGROUND: The role of adjuvant chemotherapy after resection of colorectal cancers (CRCs) is well understood for patients with stage-I or stage-III disease. Its efficacy for those with stage-II disease remains much less clear. Many investigators have sought to identify prognostic markers that might clarify which patients have the highest risk of recurrence and would, therefore, be most likely to benefit from chemotherapy. This systematic review examines evidence for the use of peripherally sampled, circulating tumour cells (CTCs) as such a prognostic marker.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) or Lynch syndrome is characterized by a number of other cancers including colorectal, endometrial and ovarian cancer. This review covers the gynaecological aspects of managing women with HNPCC: diagnostic criteria, molecular tests for diagnosis, cancer risks and different strategies for surveillance and prevention.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies correcting for ascertainment bias found slightly lower penetrance estimates than those obtained from high-risk families. HNPCC linked ovarian cancer presents at an earlier age and stage a

In a woman at the age of 30, carcinoma of the endometrium was diagnosed after hysteroscopic polypectomy. Her family history fulfilled Bethesda diagnostic criteria for Lynch syndrome or hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer. Conservative treatment was chosen based on the tumor grade, her age, and her desire for pregnancy. Three months after high-dose progesterone treatment successful conception was achieved. In this report, we suggest that individual approach should be considered in young women with low-grade endometrial carcinoma, positive family history, and unfulfilled motherhood.

OBJECTIVES: Resection of isolated pulmonary and hepatic metastases from colorectal cancer can offer potential cure. However, little data is available to determine the results of staged hepatic and pulmonary resections in the same patient.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent staged hepatic and pulmonary metastasectomy for colorectal cancer in our institute from September 1998 to May 2002. Probability of survival was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method.
RESULTS: Thirty-three metastasectomies (seven redo) were carried out in 26 patients. There were 19 male and 7 fem

AIM: The aims of this study were to evaluate the extracolonic findings identified in patients undergoing minimal preparation abdomino-pelvic CT in place of barium enema or colonoscopy for the detection of possible colorectal carcinoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CT technique involved helical acquisition (10 mm collimation, 1.5 pitch) following 2 days of preparation with oral contrast medium only. Extracolonic findings were evaluated in the light of subsequent follow-up and accuracy. The evaluation included assessment of the potential contribution of the extracolonic finding(s) to staging the

Approximately 1 in 3 colorectal patients treated by surgery with curative intent will develop cancer recurrence, and most of them will die from disseminated disease. Post-operative follow-up aims at improving these ominous figures. Any strategy is justified as far as it influences evolution: global survival, disease-free period, quality of life. The value of follow-up for patients remains controversial. The literature review suggests that more intensive follow-ups lead to an increased number of reoperations, a more aggressive oncological approach in non resectable cases, provide data for an ef

Colorectal cancer (CRC) occurring in the proximal colon and among women may represent a distinct subtype of the disease. In the present study of 120 sporadic CRCs, we used methylation-specific PCR to test whether methylation of the CpG island in the 5' region of the p16INK4a tumor suppressor gene was associated with anatomical location, gender, or other clinicopathological characteristics. Overall, 18.3% of the tumors had detectable p16INK4a methylation. A marked preponderance of methylated tumors occurred within the proximal colon; cancers occurring proximal to the sigmoid colon were 13.1 tim

In the period from 1.8.89 to 1.7.92 140 adenomas and 63 carcinomas were locally resected from the rectosigmoid area with the instruments of TEM. The mortality was 0.5%, the rate of dehiscence of the suture 9.8%. 75% of these were treated conservatively. One of the 29 patients with locally resected pTl-low risk-carcinoma developed a recurrence so far. The rate of recurrent adenomas was 1.4%. From 7.1.1992 to 24.5.1993 21 procedures in colorectal surgery were performed laparoscopically or in a combined laparoscopic transanal operation. The mortality was zero. 1 case of suture dehiscence, 2 cases

Assuming that in the postoperative recurrent tumor screening CEA levels are as important as imaging techniques in elucidating the spread or the recurrence of a tumor, we examined 61 patients with colonic carcinoma. Those patients were operated curatively and were regularly controlled by clinical examination, laboratory, sonographic, endoscopic or radiological methods. In 3 patients there was a local recurrent, in 3 other patients there was a local recurrent and metastases. 8 patients showed sonographic livermetastases only, proved by computed tomography. In 6 patients CEA-levels rose. In 2 pat

BACKGROUND: Older patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) are a heterogeneous population with wide variability in functional status, frailty, cognition, nutritional reserve, and comorbidity burden. Treatment decisions are often guided primarily by chronological age and performance status, which may not adequately capture vulnerability or patient-centered outcomes in this population.
OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study is to prospectively evaluate the association of baseline geriatric assessment (GA)-derived frailty with overall survival in older patients with mCRC receiving fir

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) remains a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with prognosis and treatment costs strongly influenced by disease stage at diagnosis. Endoscopic GC screening has been proposed for intermediate-to-high-risk countries, although its economic feasibility remains uncertain. This study evaluated the costs associated with opportunistic GC screening integrated into a colorectal cancer screening programme and compared modeled early-stage management scenarios with the real-world costs of managing Stages II-IV disease.
METHODS: A retrospective cost-comparison

BACKGROUND: We investigated the hypothesis that transforming growth factor β induced (TGFBI), an extracellular matrix protein secreted in the microenvironment of several tumors, can act as a secreted immune checkpoint (sIC) that contributes to the suppression of human antitumor T cell responses.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Serum TGFBI concentrations, measured by ELISA, were significantly higher in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and hepatocellular carcinoma than in healthy individuals and associated with poor overall survival. Strikingly, multiparametric flow cytometry analyses revealed that T

Aberrant calcium signaling, particularly the ryanodine receptor (RYR) signaling, is linked to cancer development. Currently, little is known about the status of RYR in colorectal cancer (CRC), and the correlation of RYR with CRC phenotypes remains unclear. We analyzed genetic alterations in RYRs using data from 587 patients with CRC in the TCGA database. Mutations were spread across RYR channels without identified hotspot mutations. RYR2 exhibited the highest mutation frequency (59%), with mutually exclusive mutations between RYR2 and RYR1/RYR3. RYR2 revealed significantly elevated transcripti

BACKGROUND: Colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) are the main determinant of survival in colorectal cancer, and radical resection offers the best oncological outcomes. However, heterogeneous clinicopathological features make appropriate patient selection essential. Numerous clinical risk scores (CRS) have been proposed to predict outcomes after liver resection for CRLM. This study evaluated the prognostic performance of 11 established CRS regarding survival after curative-intent resection of CRLM.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent curative-intent liver resection
