Tropical cyclones and acute coronary syndromes: a Chinese nationwide study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Evidence on the associations between tropical cyclone (TC) exposure and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains limited, particularly in developing countries. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the short-term association between TC exposure and ACS incidence and explore potential effect modifiers. METHODS: This time-stratified case-crossover study included ACS patients from a nationwide registry in mainland China between 2015 and 2022. The Willoughby wind field model was chosen to estimate TC-associated wind speeds, with TC exposure defined as the occurrence of dail

Carotid body measurement by computed tomography angiography: a cross-sectional population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Carotid bodies (CBs) are chemoreceptors located at the bifurcation of the common carotid arteries, playing an essential role in maintaining blood gas homeostasis and regulating cardiovascular function. CBs are increasingly affected in various systemic pathologies, particularly those involving sympathetic overactivation, including hypertension and heart failure. Despite CB hypertrophy in these conditions has been well-studied, normative data on dimensions remain scarce. This study aimed to establish reference ranges for CB size in a large Iranian population using computed tomography

Social alienation and cognitive function among older adults: the mediating roles of ruminative thinking and self-neglect.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline has become a major public health concern in the context of global population aging. Social alienation has been identified as a significant modifiable factor associated with cognitive impairment. Although previous studies have suggested that depression mediates the association between social alienation and cognitive function, depression is a multidimensional construct. The specific social-psychological-behavioral associations underlying this relationship remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the mediating associations of ruminative thinking and self-neglect i

Metabolomic analyses of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, muscle cramps, and TJ-68 treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Most patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal motor neuron disease, experience painful muscle cramps. Our recent pilot trial of the Japanese Kampo medicine TJ-68 suggested its efficacy in improving muscle cramps in patients with ALS. OBJECTIVES: This study analyzed plasma metabolomic changes to identify the underlying mechanisms of muscle cramps in ALS and the effects of TJ-68. METHODS: Plasma was obtained from 11 participants with ALS in the repeated crossover trial at five time points (baseline, two placebo phases, and two TJ-68 phases). Metabolites were ana

Validation and Reliability of the "SLU-AMSAD" Depression Scale in Individuals With Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of depression may be challenging in older adults with dementia because of atypical symptoms and overlap with other comorbidities. While the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD) is the gold standard for screening, the Saint Louis University-Appetite, Mood, Sleep, Activity, and Thoughts of Death (SLU-AMSAD), another brief screening tool designed to assess late-life depression, seems to be more practical than the CSDD, with a shorter test duration. DESIGN: Cross-sectional validation study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: In this study, conducted at a geriatric out

Case studies in neuroscience: movement-related cortical stimulation to enhance corticospinal transmission in chronic incomplete spinal cord injury.

Incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) disrupts signal transmission at the level of injury (LOI) and in higher brain structures, weakening intracortical circuits and impairing movement initiation. A potential approach to target intracortical circuits is to deliver transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) during motor intention, known as movement-related cortical stimulation (MRCS). We hypothesize that delivering TMS during motor intention will enhance corticospinal excitability (CE) and improve muscle activation below the LOI. One participant with chronic severe iSCI participated in a crossover s

Impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormones is associated with frailty in older patients with cardiometabolic disease.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how impaired peripheral and central sensitivity to thyroid hormones relates to frailty. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated whether these indices were associated with the prevalence of frailty in older patients with cardiometabolic disease. METHODS: A total of 637 older patients with cardiometabolic disease who visited an outpatient clinic and were evaluated for thyroid function and frailty indices were included in this analysis. The free triiodothyronine/free thyroxine ratio (fT3/fT4) and Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index (TFQI) were measured as periph

Orthostatic-dependent cardiopulmonary responses among trained females during intensity matched resistance exercises in a pilot randomized crossover study.

The impact of orthostatic regulation during exercise, particularly resistance training, is not fully understood. This study investigates the acute cardiopulmonary responses of intensity-matched resistance exercises, targeting similar muscle groups but performed in different body positions in young trained females. Fourteen healthy females (21.6 ± 2.0 years) performed a 3-repetition Maximum test (3-RM) for the squat movement in the Smith machine (SM) and the leg press (LP). During two subsequent visits, they randomly completed two training sessions in SM and LP (two sets of ten repetitions at 5
