Does hearing loss lead to dementia? A review of the literature.

Recent studies have revealed a correlation between aging-related hearing loss and the likelihood of developing Alzheimer Disease. However, it is not yet known if the correlation simply reflects the fact that these two disorders share common risk factors or whether there is a causal link between them. The answer to this question carries therapeutic implications. Unfortunately, it is not possible to study the question of causality between aging-related hearing loss and dementia in human subjects. Here, we evaluate the research surrounding induced-hearing loss in animal models on non-auditory cog

Non-implantable Artificial Hearing Technology.

A hearing aid is a sound-amplifying device used for aiding hearing-impaired individuals and compensating hearing loss. With the development … o select hearing aid as early as possible, and for those with congenital hearing loss or prelingual deafness, it can be added assessment of speech development while preventing the child from swallowing hearing aids or batteries by mistake. Speech recognition score (SRS) test is very important in elderly patients, because the speech hearing and pure-tone he …

[Strategies for a regenerative therapy of hearing loss. German version].

Despite impressive technical progress in the field of conventional hearing aids and implantable hearing systems, the hopes for the treatment of inner ear diseases such as hearing loss and tinnitus have become increasingly directed toward regenerative therapeutic approaches. This review discusses the currently most promising strategies for hair cell regeneration in the inner ear to treat hearing loss, including stem cell-based, gene transfer-based, and pharmacological interventions. Furthermore, previous milestones and ground-breaking work in this scientific field are identified. After many yea

[Relevant factors of tinnitus in the elderly: an analysis of 150 volunteers].

Objective:To evaluate and characterize tinnitus in elderly volunteers, try to find out the relevant factors that can affect the incidence of tinnitus.Method:The study included 150 elderly volunteers. All volunteers had taken the otology examination and pure tone audiometry. They were interviewed by the investigators who were trained together, using the same questionnaire. The characteristics of tinnitus and the relationship between all relevant factors and tinnitus were analyzed.Result:Average age was 71.4 years. There are now 77 patients with tinnitus(51.3%), of which 31 cases have sustained t

Non-Ataxic Presenting Symptoms of Dominant Ataxias.

While the onset of a dominantly inherited ataxia is typically taken to be the onset of gait ataxia, a wide range of other symptoms related to central and/or peripheral nervous system impairment, or even to non-neurological involvement, can be the presenting feature. Knowledge of these is fairly robust for the commonest spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs 1, 2, 3 and 6) and for those where a striking non-ataxic presentation is the norm (SCAs 7 and 12), but the literature is potentially misleading in the rarer dominant ataxias. This review summarises what is currently known of these non-ataxic present

Critical period for first language: the crucial role of language input during the first year of life.

The critical period for language acquisition is often explored in the context of second language acquisition. We focus on a crucially different notion of critical period for language, with a crucially different time scale: that of a critical period for first language acquisition. We approach this question by examining the language outcomes of children who missed their critical period for acquiring a first language: children who did not receive the required language input because they grew in isolation or due to hearing impairment and children whose brain has not developed normally because of t

Total hearing loss and blindness caused by relapsing polychondritis and myelodysplastic syndrome.

Relapsing polychondritis is an autoimmune disease that primarily manifests as cartilaginous tissue destruction. However, the immune impairment may also involve noncartilaginous tissues such as kidneys, blood vessels, etc. The disease may occur as a primary disorder or in association with other diseases. The case of a female patient with concurrent manifestation of myelodysplastic syndrome-refractory anemia with excess blasts, and relapsing polychondritis, is presented. The diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis was established ten months after the diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome, when the

Averaged electrode voltages: management of electrode failures in children, fluctuating threshold and comfort levels, and otosclerosis.

Implant-generated surface potentials, or averaged electrode voltages (AEVs), were collected by means of the electrode-by-electrode (E-E) mapping variable mode strategy. Three topics were investigated. 1) Eighteen children under the age of 7 were tested and the E-E map of 4 of them was found deviant; all 4 children were deaf owing to meningitis. Some electrodes marked as failing by E-E mapping did not cause problems during device fitting, and electrodes not usable in device fitting showed normal AEVs in 1 child. Overall, the AEVs agreed well with abnormalities in the behavioral threshold (T) an

Genetic heterogeneity of Alport syndrome.

Forty-one families have been studied with stringent diagnostic criteria of Alport syndrome: proven renal disease with hematuria affecting at least two relatives, neural hearing loss in at least one affected individual, and evolution to renal failure in at least one affected individual. The proportion of affected offsprings of affected females does not significantly differ from the ratio expected for a dominant trait. The descendance of affected males shows a lack of affected males. In four families, with parental consanguinity and nonaffected parents, the findings agree with an autosomal reces

10 years of experience with intratympanally applied streptomycin (gentamycin) in the therapy of Morbus Menière.

During the last 10 years a total of 83 patients with severe cases of unilateral Morbus Menière were treated in our clinic. The proposed therapy was to administer streptomycin (gentamycinsulfate) intratympanically by applying two different ways of procedure. In the first group of 40 patients we attempted to destroy the vestibular organ without harming the cochlea whereby we avoided surgical intervention. In the second group of 43 patients we integrated more recent findings in the pathophysiological mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of Morbus Menière into our therapeutic considerations and a
