Three children with perioral or periocular eruptions were treated with topical metronidazole gel (0.75%) twice daily. Significant improvement was observed after 2 months. Complete resolution occurred after 14 weeks.

In patients with parasitologically revealed dermatitis caused by cercariae of avian schistosomes (Trichobilhariza szidati) diagnostic indirect immunofluorescence technique (IFAT) was employed for the detection of antibodies. Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is an intensely pruritic, blistering skin disease characterized by cutaneous IgA deposits and an associated, most often asymptomatic, gluten-sensitive enteropathy. BACKGROUND: Because the initial neutrophilic infiltrate in dermatitis herpetiformis is within the dermal papillae, most investigators have assumed the vesicles occur in this same area. A case of erythema multiforme associated with an allergic contact dermatitis in response to an epoxy-based compound is presented. Patch tests revealed a positive reaction to both the epoxy resin and the hardener. Chemicals applied directly to the skin should be considered as a potential cause of erythema multiforme.

We report a case of Jacquet erosive diaper dermatitis (dermatitis syphiloides posterosiva) in a 9-year-old girl suffering from urinary incontinence due to an ectopic opening of a left double ureter into the vaginal vestibule. The toilet paper that she used as an absorbent was thought to be one of the factors causing the eruption. The lesions cleared with topical application of a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory ointment and zinc oxide ointment, in conjunction with the use of sanitary napkins.

A case is reported of a 26-year-old woman who developed contact dermatitis due to a peripheral venous catheter. This catheter had a metal connector, made of nickel-brass. The patient had been admitted for uterine contractions and was to receive an infusion of salbutamol. Twelve hours after the catheter had been set up, she developed at the puncture site an acute inflammatory reaction, with oedema and bullae. Experimental evaluation of two barrier creams has been carried out. One of these creams was composed of hydrocarbon components; the other had, in addition, silicone oil and cetaceum. The protective properties of these creams on rats and guinea pigs have been examined. It was found that investigated creams exerted an inhibiting effect on the absorption of chromium and nickel through the skin of rats from aqueous solutions. Moreover, the creams demonstrated a pronounced protective action on guinea pigs sensitized to chromium.

Among 30 patients who received a clinical diagnosis of exfoliative dermatitis and were biopsied between 1982 and 1990, nine showed microscopic features of lichenoid dermatitis. The Authors report eight cases of Cheyletiella dermatitis, parasite mite of domestic animals but also known as pathogenic for man. This animal parasitosis mentioned many times in other countries, seems to be very diffused in Italy, too. Nevertheless, the literature tells that normally, in our country, Cheyletiella dermatitis is a pathology completely underestimated and almost unknown. The Authors, because of the aspecificity of the clinical and histopathological data, lay special stress on the differential diagnosis problems concerning this infestation.

Prevalence and severity of seborrhoeic dermatitis were studied in 150 patients with psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety and organic mental illness. As a control group, we examined 150 patients waiting for surgery and regarded as obviously anxious. Thirty-eight psychiatric patients were found to have seborrhoeic dermatitis, versus 13 in the surgery group. This statistically significant difference was entirely ascribable to patients with depression.

A 63-year-old male developed allergic contact dermatitis with antibiotic ointment applied to the skin eruptions of herpes zoster. From the result of patch test, fradiomycin sulfate contained in the ointment was identified as the contact sensitizing antigen. By means of RAST investigations, we detected specific IgE antibodies against Pityrosporon orbiculare in the plasma of patients with atopic dermatitis. The patients suffering from the so-called head and neck dermatitis showed an average specific IgE antibody titer of RAST class 3, whereas in those with predominant involvement of the extremities we found an average antibody titer of RAST class 1.

In 156 children and adolescents with atopic dermatitis retrospective analysis was carried out for establishing the effect of constitutional and environmental factors on the process of development and clinical course of this disease.
