Dengue/dengue haemorrhagic fever has been one of the most important resurgent tropical diseases in the past 17 years, with expanding geographic distribution of both the viruses and the mosquito vectors, increased frequency of epidemics, the development of hyperendemicity (co-circulation of multiple virus serotypes) and the emergence of dengue haemorrhagic fever in new areas. This paper briefly reviews the changing epidemiology of dengue, discusses some of the factors responsible for the recent resurgence, and reviews the current options for reversing the trend of emergent disease.

The relation between AIDS-related knowledge and sexual risk-taking for a sample of young men living in northern Thailand was examined. Data were collected during the fall of 1991. The sample of 1472 men includes university students, soldiers, store clerks, and laborers. Recent commercial sex patronage was variable among the subgroups, and consistent condom use among these recent patrons was far from universal. Overnight polysomnography was conducted in 39 Thai children with clinically suspected obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) during the years 1994 to 1996. Eighty-five percent of these children met the polysomnographic criteria of pediatric OSAS, 42.4% among whom had severe OSAS. Male : female ratio of children with OSAS was 4.5:1. The peak age at the time of diagnosis was 3 to 4 years. The most common predisposing factor was adenoidal and tonsillar hypertrophy. Between 1984 and 1993, pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia developing in chronic ulcers were observed in 28 former Senegalese leprosy patients, which amounts to an annual frequency of 1.9 per 1000 ulcers. Correct diagnosis could only be made by histopathological examination of specimens taken from the depth of the lesion. Amputation was carried out on 17 patients and local excision on the other 10. This paper examines the present status of Rheumatic fever (RF) and Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in India with reference to both prevalence and incidence, and evaluates the currently available methods of control. Data available over the last 10 years shows that the prevalence of RF/RHD in the most vulnerable group i.e. school children between 5 to 15 years of age is still unacceptably high. RHD is encountered in 1 to 5.4 per 1,000 in large samples of school children and RF in 0.3 to 0.5 per 1,000 children. We report the clinical features, electrocardiographic and chest X-ray findings, and Doppler-measured pulmonary artery pressures in 22 children admitted to Goroka Base Hospital with primary pulmonary hypertension and compare them with findings in 10 controls.
