Electrical modification of disuse osteoporosis.

Localized electrical stimulation of the immobilized hind limb of young rabbits resulted in dramatically more bone in the tuber calcis (heel bone) compared to the severe loss of bone (osteoporosis) seen in unstimulated, immobilized controls. Detailed histological evaluation using microradiography and fluorescence and polarization microscopy showed that the increase was probably due to an overall inhibition of surface cortical bone loss )endosteal resorption) and an increase in the quantity of the new immature bone. There was also evidence of increased osteonal resorption in the stimulated anima

THE RATIO OF EXCITATORY AND INHIBITORY SYNAPTIC PROCESSES IN NEURONS OF THE ЕNTORHINAL CORTEX OF THE BRAIN, ACTIVATED BY BASOLATERAL AMYGDALA ON THE MODEL OF PARKINSON'S DISEASE, UNDER CONDITIONS OF PROTECTION BY HYDROCORTISONE.

Parkinson disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative condition. It affects the central nervous system, and it impairs cognitive processes, motor skills and other functions. The aim of this study was to determine the synaptic processes in medial Entorhinal cortex (mENT) under High frequency stimulation of Basolateral Amygdala on the model of Parkinson's disease under the influence of Hydrocortisone. Rotenone is involved in the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. We investigated whether hydrocortison protects against rotenone-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity in a rat model by in vivo electri

[Development and clinical value of programmed ventricular stimulation in coronary artery disease and dilated cardiomyopathy].

Programmed ventricular stimulation (PVS), a clinical tool introduced in the early 1980s, aims to prove the electrical vulnerability of the heart and, independent of spontaneous arrhythmia variability, to trigger arrhythmias under controlled conditions. A specific response is the inducibility of monomorphic sustained ventricular tachycardia. This depends on the underlying heart disease, e.g., only for coronary artery disease but not for nonischemic diseases. The value of pharmacologic arrhythmia control as serial electrical testing is uncertain. Up to now there seems to be no prognostic value o

Successful use of quinidine in treatment of electrical storm in Brugada syndrome.

We report an adolescent with a malignant form of Brugada syndrome who presented with 15 episodes of ventricular fibrillation (VF) over 10 days, shortly after implantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Oral quinidine bisulphate at a dose of 1000 mg/day successfully suppressed the electrical storm and recurrence of VF over 18-month follow-up. It also normalized the ST-segment elevation in his right precordial leads, suppressed all ambient unifocal ventricular extrasystoles and induction of VF on programmed electrical stimulation. This case suggests that quinidine, by virtue of it

The effect of electrically induced lower extremity ergometry on an ischial pressure ulcer: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) are at an increased risk of pressure ulcer development. Electrical stimulation of adjacent muscles may be underutilized as a tool for pressure ulcer healing in individuals with SCI. METHOD: Single case study. SUMMARY: A 27-year-old man with C4 tetraplegia developed a left ischial pressure ulcer that for 23 months responded slowly and inconsistently to conventional treatment. Electrically induced lower extremity ergometry (EILEE) was introduced to facilitate wound healing. The pressure ulcer healed completely in 6.5 months. CONCLUSION: Th

Centrifugal arousal in the olfactory bulb.

The electrical activity of the olfactory bulb was recorded in awake, unrestrained cats with electrodes permanently implanted. It was found that any kind of sensory stimulation producing alertness or arousal brought about the appearance of bursts of rhythmic activity, the magnitude of which was related to the degree of alertness of the cat.

Brainstem Stroke and Dysphagia Treatment: A Narrative Review on the Role of Neuromodulation, Skill-Based Swallowing Training and Transient Receptor Potential Agonists.

Swallowing is mediated by the central nervous system, including cortical and subcortical structures, the cerebellum, and the brainstem. The brainstem contains the swallowing centre that is crucial for initiating and coordinating swallowing. Consequently, brainstem damage due to stroke often leads to severe and persistent dysphagia. The aim of the present narrative review is to provide an overview of dysphagia following brainstem stroke and its management. It summarizes the physiology and pathophysiology of dysphagia following brainstem stroke and the available therapeutic options, and evaluate

Characterization and closed-loop control of infrared thalamocortical stimulation produces spatially constrained single-unit responses.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a powerful tool for the treatment of circuitopathy-related neurological and psychiatric diseases and disorders such as Parkinson's disease and obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as a critical research tool for perturbing neural circuits and exploring neuroprostheses. Electrically mediated DBS, however, is limited by the spread of stimulus currents into tissue unrelated to disease course and treatment, potentially causing undesirable patient side effects. In this work, we utilize infrared neural stimulation (INS), an optical neuromodulation technique that use

Selective optogenetic stimulation of efferent fibers in the vagus nerve of a large mammal.

BACKGROUND: Electrical stimulation applied to individual organs, peripheral nerves, or specific brain regions has been used to treat a range of medical conditions. In cardiovascular disease, autonomic dysfunction contributes to the disease progression and electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve has been pursued as a treatment for the purpose of restoring the autonomic balance. However, this approach lacks selectivity in activating function- and organ-specific vagal fibers and, despite promising results of many preclinical studies, has so far failed to translate into a clinical treatment of c

Modulation of SI and ACC response to noxious and non-noxious electrical stimuli after the spared nerve injury model of neuropathic pain.

BACKGROUND: The current knowledge on the role of SI and ACC in acute pain processing and how these contribute to the development of chronic pain is limited. Our objective was to investigate differences in and modulation of intracortical responses from SI and ACC in response to different intensities of peripheral presumed noxious and non-noxious stimuli in the acute time frame of a peripheral nerve injury in rats. METHODS: We applied non-noxious and noxious electrical stimulation pulses through a cuff electrode placed around the sciatic nerve and measured the cortical responses (six electrodes

Acute bladder decentralization in hound dogs: Preliminary results of effects on hypogastric nerve electroneurograms and detrusor pressure responses to spinal root and hypogastric nerve stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to refine electroneurogram techniques for monitoring hypogastric nerve activity during bladder filling, and then examined nerve activity in normal intact versus acutely decentralized bladders. METHODS: Effects of electrical stimulation of hypogastric nerves or lumbar ventral roots on detrusor pressure were examined, as were effects of isoflurane versus propofol anesthetics on hypogastric nerve stimulation evoked pressure. Hypogastric nerve activity was then recorded using custom-made bipolar cuff electrodes during bladder filling before and after its transection between th

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation in healthy humans reduces sympathetic nerve activity.

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is currently used to treat refractory epilepsy and is being investigated as a potential therapy for a range of conditions, including heart failure, tinnitus, obesity and Alzheimer's disease. However, the invasive nature and expense limits the use of VNS in patient populations and hinders the exploration of the mechanisms involved. OBJECTIVE: We investigated a non-invasive method of VNS through electrical stimulation of the auricular branch of the vagus nerve distributed to the skin of the ear--transcutaneous VNS (tVNS) and measured the autonomic effec

Neck muscle afferents influence oromotor and cardiorespiratory brainstem neural circuits.

Sensory information arising from the upper neck is important in the reflex control of posture and eye position. It has also been linked to the autonomic control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) and cervical dystonia, which involve disturbance to the neck region, can often present with abnormalities to the oromotor, respiratory and cardiovascular systems. We investigated the potential neural pathways underlying such symptoms. Simulating neck afferent activity by electrical stimulation of the second cervical nerve in a working heart brainstem pre
