Male Partner Risk Behaviors Are Associated With Reactive Rapid HIV Antibody Tests Among Pregnant Mexican Women: Implications for Prevention of Vertical and Sexual HIV Transmission in Concentrated HIV Epidemics.

Mexico's policies on antenatal HIV testing are contradictory, and little is known about social and behavioral characteristics that increase pregnant Mexican women's risks of acquiring HIV. We analyzed the association between risk behaviors reported by pregnant women for themselves and their male partners, and women's rapid HIV antibody test results from a large national sample. Three quarters of pregnant women with a reactive test did not report risk behaviors for themselves and one third did not report risk behaviors for themselves or their male partners. In the retrospective case-control ana

Relationship between the population incidence of febrile convulsions in young children in Sydney, Australia and seasonal epidemics of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, 2003-2010: a time series analysis.

BACKGROUND: In 2010, intense focus was brought to bear on febrile convulsions in Australian children particularly in relation to influenza vaccination. Febrile convulsions are relatively common in infants and can lead to hospital admission and severe outcomes. We aimed to examine the relationships between the population incidence of febrile convulsions and influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) seasonal epidemics in children less than six years of age in Sydney Australia using routinely collected syndromic surveillance data and to assess the feasibility of using this data to predict i…

Development of a multiple primer RAPD assay as a tool for phylogenetic analysis in Listeria spp. strains isolated from milkproduct associated epidemics, sporadic cases of listeriosis and dairy environments.

A total of 82 Listeria strains comprising four species were examined by amplification with a multiple primer random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay. It was the objective of the study to set up a procedure suitable for analysis of the relationships among strains from milkproduct-associated epidemics, strains from sporadic cases of listeriosis and field strains from dairy products and dairy environments. In a preliminary study, 205 primers, each 10 bp long, were screened for suitability as primers and 44 primers showing reliable and reproducible RAPD patterns at a defined reaction conditi…

Indirect Effects of Ebola Virus Disease Epidemics on Health Systems in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia: A Scoping Review Supplemented with Expert Interviews.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemics have been extensively documented and have received large scientific and public attention since 1976. Until July 2022, 16 countries worldwide had reported at least one case of EVD, resulting in 43 epidemics. Most of the epidemics occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) but the largest epidemic occurred from 2014-2016 in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia in West Africa. The indirect effects of EVD epidemics on these countries' health systems, i.e., the consequences beyond infected patients and deaths immediately related to EVD, can be significant. Th…

Larval Indices of Vector Mosquitoes as Predictors of Dengue Epidemics: An Approach to Manage Dengue Outbreaks Based on Entomological Parameters in the Districts of Colombo and Kandy, Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of dengue epidemics is a vital aspect in control programmes. Predictions based on larval indices of disease vectors are widely used in dengue control, with defined threshold values. However, there is no set threshold in Sri Lanka at the national or regional levels for Aedes larval indices. Therefore, the current study aimed at developing threshold values for vector indices in two dengue high-risk districts in Sri Lanka. METHODS: Monthly vector indices (House Index [HI], Container Index [CI], Breteau Index for Aedes aegypti [BIagp], and Ae. albopictus [BIalb]), of t…

Identical strength of the T cell responses against E2, nsP1 and capsid CHIKV proteins in recovered and chronic patients after the epidemics of 2005-2006 in La Reunion Island.

To characterize the immunity developed by patients infected by chikungunya virus (CHIKV), we studied the intensity and specificity of CHIKV-specific T cells mediated responses in chronic and recovered patients at 12 to 24 months post-infection. T cells were challenged in vitro against CHIKV synthetic peptides covering the length of three viral proteins, capsid, E2 and nsP1 proteins as well as all inactivated virus particles. Cytokine production was assessed by ELISPOT and intracellular labeling. T cells producing IFN-γ were detected against CHIKV in 85% patient's cells either by direct ELISPOT

Observational study of skin and soft-tissue Staphylococcus aureus infection in patients infected with HIV-1 and epidemics of Panton-Valentine leucocidin-positive community-acquired MRSA infection in Osaka, Japan.

BACKGROUND: In patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 at our hospital, we observed increases in skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs) by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA). Therefore, we analyzed factors related to CA-MRSA infection and performed a molecular epidemiological investigation. METHODS: HIV-1-infected patients were diagnosed with SSTIs related to S. aureus between 2007 and 2017, and MRSA was classified into community and hospital-acquired types according to published criteria. Information was collected retrospectively fro

Syphilis among adult males with a history of male-to-male sexual contact living with diagnosed HIV in New York State (excluding New York City): The challenge of intersecting epidemics.

Since 2009, syphilis has been increasing in New York State (NYS) excluding New York City (NYC) among men with a history of male-to-male sexu … d of having a missed opportunity. This study supports high interrelatedness of the syphilis and HIV epidemics among MSM. Since syphilis can impact HIV viral load suppression status, efforts to end the HIV epidemic need to be coupled with syphilis elimination efforts.

Seroprevalence survey and estimated infection fatality rate of SARS-CoV-2 in Daegu, Republic of Korea - Lessons learned for preparing for new emerging viral disease epidemics: A cross-sectional study.

Daegu in the Republic of Korea experienced the 1st major community outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outside China in February 2020. The infection fatality rate (IFR) and herd immunity level of COVID-19 in the early stages of the pandemic have not been thoroughly investigated in Korea. The aim of this study was to assess the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) seroprevalence and IFR prior to the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines. We conducted a seroprevalence survey in Daegu, using a convenience sample of residual serum specimens from 1500 individuals dur

Dengue infection in kidney transplant recipients during a major epidemic and the implementation of systematic donor screening: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: During Brazil's unprecedented dengue epidemic in 2023-2025, we develop a rationale for organ donor screening to mitigate the risk of donor derived transmission using rapid, widely available, and low-cost tests. Here we aimed to describe the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and outcomes among kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) who developed different routes of dengue infection and establish a policy for mitigating the risk of donor transmission. METHODS: This study conducted at a large kidney transplant center in Brazil-Hospital do Rim (HRIM) examined dengue in KTRs through th

Stk1 is required for BlaR1-mediated broad-spectrum β-lactam resistance in epidemic-causing strains of Staphylococcus aureus.

Sensory induction of mecA expression plays a pivotal role in mediating broad-spectrum β-lactam resistance of MRSA. In contemporary MRSA isolates, sensory induction of β-lactam resistance originates at the membrane-associated BlaR1, which, upon detection of β-lactam drugs, triggers a signal transduction cascade that promotes mecA induction. We hereby show that phosphorylation of BlaR1, mediated through the serine-threonine kinase, Stk1, stabilizes its membrane-spanning state and retention, allowing for proper drug sensing and subsequent signal transduction events to occur, culminating in mecA-m

Network analysis of the relationships between psychological capital and emotional exhaustion in clinical nurses during the post-epidemic period.

OBJECTIVES: Post-pandemic, nurses are at high risk of psychological issues and emotional exhaustion. Existing research predominantly uses total scores to explore the link between psychological capital and emotional exhaustion. Network-analysis research on this relationship among post-pandemic nurses is scarce. Our study fills this gap with network analysis, aiming to uncover variable relationships, understand interaction mechanisms, and develop targeted interventions to boost nurses' psychological resilience. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey wa

A modeling study on the critical sensitivity of epidemic peaks and final size to marginal changes in non-pharmaceutical intervention efficacy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in China, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) have been changed from the containment to the dynamic zero-ca … s induced by three different strains, we show that the controlled epidemic trajectories of COVID-19 epidemics depend entirely on the efficacy of NPIs: the infectivity of a strain has little relevance, even for the most infectious strains. Thus, minor changes in the strength of NPIs will lead to huge differences in epidemiological indicators such as outbreak …
