Patients with a peripheral facial palsy due to an underlying Ixodes-borne borreliosis often have cerebrospinal fluid findings indicating meningeal involvement. The aim of the present study was to identify signs of CNS involvement by means of brain-stem evoked response audiometry (BSER) in patients with a facial palsy due to borreliosis, as well as in patients with a facial palsy of unknown aetiology. Bell's palsy. Abnormalities in BSER were found to be significantly more common along the borrelial patients. Furthermore, a reversal of these abnormalities following treatment with benzyl-penicill

The effect of the development of postauricular muscles on the postauricular myogenic response (PAR) was investigated in normal children and children with microtia. There were no differences between the PAR of normal children and that of the intact ear of children with microtia. The PAR obtained from the normal and microtic sides of children with unilateral microtia showed no significant differences as regards waveform, latency, threshold, or amplitude. Our findings suggest that the development of the postauricular muscle does not affect the PAR, and it seems difficult to explain the large indi

Regular oscillations were recorded in olfactory part of the brain (procerebrum) of gastropod mollusk Helix both electrographically and optically. In general, oscillations resembled those in slugs reported earlier. Odor application caused a transient change in the procerebral oscillations followed by appearance of a special pattern. For the first time the evoked potential was recorded in procerebrum and mapped in reference to the area of oscillations. The area of spreading of evoked potential roughly corresponded to the neuropil projection, while the oscillations were recorded in the projection

The pre- and postsynaptic actions of exogenously applied ATP were investigated in intact and dissociated parasympathetic neurones of rat submandibular ganglia. Nerve-evoked excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) were not inhibited by the purinergic receptor antagonists, suramin and pyridoxal-phosphate-6-azophenyl-2',4'-disulphonic acid (PPADS), or the desensitising agonist, alpha,beta-methylene ATP. In contrast, EPSPs were abolished by the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonists, hexamethonium and mecamylamine. Focal application of ATP (100 microM) had no effect on membrane potential

1. The firing patterns of 22 motor neurons were determined by simultaneously recording intracellularly from up to 7 neurons during evoked feedinglike buccal motor programs (BMPs). Intracellular stimulation of cerebral-buccal interneuron 2 (CBI-2) or tactile stimulation of the odontophore were used to elicit BMPs in a reduced preparation. 2. Evoked BMPs were identified as either ingestive-like (iBMP) or egestive-like (eBMP) on the basis of their similarity to those previously recorded in select neurons in freely behaving animals. Neurons were divided into the p-group, r-group, or c-group, on th

BACKGROUND: Termination of ventricular tachycardia (VT) by a pacing stimulus that does not generate a QRS complex (termination without global propagation [TWGP]) can be a marker for a critical re-entry circuit isthmus. However, the electrophysiologic and anatomic features of these sites and their relation to VT substrate defined by 3-dimensional electroanatomical maps (3D-EAM) remain unknown.
OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study aimed to characterize TWGP sites and their relation to VT substrate identified by 3D-EAM.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence has shown a cause-and-effect relationship between type 1 diabetes mellitus and auditory and cognitive dysfunctions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on central auditory and cognitive functions in school-age children and adolescents.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 101 children and adolescents, 50 with T1DM, of both sexes, aged between 7 and 18 years. All participants were selected for a structured interview on hearing, behavioral, and cognitive health and assessment of brainstem auditory evoked potentials …

Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) is a strategy to improve motor output in humans with neuromotor impairment. A single AIH session increases the amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEP) in a finger muscle (first dorsal interosseous), demonstrating enhanced corticospinal neurotransmission. Since AIH elicits phrenic/diaphragm long-term facilitation (LTF) in rodent models, we tested the hypothesis that AIH augments diaphragm MEPs in humans. Eleven healthy adults (7 males, age = 29 ± 6 years) were tested. Transcranial and cervical magnetic stimulation were used to induce diaphragm MEPs and compou…

Cortical deafness is a clinical rarity whereby a patient is unresponsive to all types of sounds despite the preserved integrity of the perip … s. It presents the evolution of changes after ischaemic cerebrovascular event expressed as auditory evoked potentials starting from short through middle and long latency and ending with event-related potentials and supported by neuroimaging.

Members of the TGF-β superfamily play numerous roles in nervous system development and function. In Drosophila, retrograde BMP signaling at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is required presynaptically for proper synapse growth and neurotransmitter release. In this study, we analyzed whether the Activin branch of the TGF-β superfamily also contributes to NMJ development and function. We find that elimination of the Activin/TGF-β type I receptor babo, or its downstream signal transducer smox, does not affect presynaptic NMJ growth or evoked excitatory junctional potentials (EJPs), but instead re

To develop a simple screening system for blockers of voltage-gated Kv1.3 and Kv1.5 channels, new cell lines co-expressing mutated Nav1.5 (IFM/Q3), Kir2.1 (Kir), and Kv1.3 or Kv1.5 were introduced as IFM/Q3+Kir+Kv1.3 and IFM/Q3+Kir+Kv1.5, respectively. Electrical stimulation (ES) of a cell line, IFM/Q3+Kir, induced prolonged action potentials due to the slow inactivation of IFM/Q3 and subsequent cell death. Additional co-expression of Kv1.3 or Kv1.5 to IFM/Q3+Kir shortened the evoked action potentials and prevented cell death. In the presence of margatoxin, a selective Kv1.3-blocker, ES induced

An earlier study demonstrated changes in synaptic efficacy and seizure susceptibility in adult rat brain slices following extremely low-frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) exposure. The developing embryonic and early postnatal brain may be even more sensitive to MF exposure. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of a long-term ELF-MF (0.5 and 3 mT, 50 Hz) exposure on synaptic functions in the developing brain. Rats were treated with chronic exposure to MF during two critical periods of brain development, i.e. in utero during the second gestation week or as newborns for 7 days

OBJECTIVE: To establish an artificial bladder reflex arc in dogs via an abdominal reflex pathway above the level of spinal cord injury to reinnervate the neurogenic bladder and restore controllable micturition.
METHODS: Ten beagles were used in the experiment. We anastomosed the proximal end of the right T12 ventral root and distal end of the right S2 ventral root by performing autogenous nerve grafting to build an abdomen-to-bladder reflex, whereas the right T12 dorsal root was kept intact. The early function of the reflex arc was evaluated by performing electrophysiological studies as well

Most contemporary cochlear implants (CIs) stimulate the auditory nerve with trains of amplitude-modulated, symmetric biphasic pulses. Although both polarities of a pulse can depolarize the nerve fibers and generate action potentials, it remains unknown which of the two (positive or negative) phases has the stronger effect. Understanding the effects of pulse polarity will help to optimize the stimulation protocols and to deliver the most relevant information to the implant listeners. Animal experiments have shown that cathodic (negative) current flows are more effective than anodic (positive) o
