Dietary interventions for primary allergy prevention--what is the evidence?

Allergen exposure in the early postnatal life of an infant with a genetic predisposition for allergy is regarded as at least one essential risk factor for later development of allergic diseases. The most important allergen exposure in early life derives from the early nutrition of the baby. Thus, intervention based on the concept of reducing the allergen load in the diet is one approach for primary allergy prevention in children at risk. This includes breastfeeding, allergen-reduced diet of the pregnant and lactating mother, cow milk protein hydrolysate infant formulas (= hypoallergenic infant

Relationship of gender and eating disorder symptoms to reported cravings for food: construct validation of state and trait craving questionnaires in Spanish.

Using confirmatory factor analysis, we cross-validated the factor structures of the Spanish versions of the State and Trait Food Cravings Questionnaires (FCQ-S and FCQ-T; ) in a sample of 304 Spanish college students. Controlling for eating disorder symptoms and food deprivation, scores on the FCQ-T were higher for women than for men, but no sex differences were observed on the FCQ-S. Eating disorder symptomatology was predictive of trait cravings, whereas food deprivation was predictive state cravings. Trait cravings, but not state cravings, were more strongly associated to symptoms of anorex

The relationship between reading beauty and fashion magazines and the use of pathogenic dieting methods among adolescent females.

This study examined the relationship between reading women's beauty and fashion magazines and the use of pathogenic dieting methods (laxatives, appetite suppressants/diet pills, skipping two meals a day, intentional vomiting, and restricting calories to 1,200 or less each day) among 502 high school females. Weak to moderate positive associations were found between reading frequency and each of these unhealthful practices except the use of laxatives. When controlling for anxiety about weight and frequency of regular exercise, however, the original bivariate relations between reading frequency a

Developmental, behavioral, and biochemical effects of glyphosate exposure on the embryos of a freshwater molluscan model species.

Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides globally and is frequently detected in surface waters in multiple regions. Despite its toxicological relevance and potential ecological and human health implications (e.g., carcinogenity), its use was recently renewed in the European Union until 2033. A growing body of literature has showed that glyphosate can cause adverse effects in mollusks, but previous studies have focused primarily on survival, reproduction, genotoxicity, and certain cellular biomarkers, leaving its effects on molluscan behavior and embryonic development largely unknow

A Lightweight Pig Aggressive Behavior Recognition Model by Effective Integration of Spatio-Temporal Features.

With the rise of smart agriculture and the expansion of pig farming, pig aggressive behavior recognition is crucial for maintaining herd health and improving farming efficiency. The differences in background and light variation in different barns can lead to the missed detection and false detection of pig aggressive behaviors. Therefore, we propose a deep learning-based pig aggressive behavior recognition model, in order to improve the adaptability of the model in complex pig environments. This model, combined with MobileNetV2 and Autoformer, can effectively extract local detail features of pi

The Administration of Melatonin Improved Depressive Behavior in Both Maximal Electroshock Seizure-Prone and Non-Seizure Mice After Undergoing Levetiracetam Treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Comorbid psychiatric disorders, especially depression, pose challenges in epilepsy. Antiepileptic drugs, including levetiracetam, can also have psychiatric adverse effects, necessitating strategies to address mood regulation. The study aims to assess the impact of melatonin administration on depressive behavior in epileptic and non-epileptic mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male albino mice were assigned to different treatment groups. Levetiracetam (20 mg/kg ip) was injected for 14 days; melatonin (25 mg/kg ip) was injected for 7 days. Additional groups were included for epileptic mic

Muscone with Attenuation of Neuroinflammation and Oxidative Stress Exerts Antidepressant-Like Effect in Mouse Model of Chronic Restraint Stress.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common mental disorder with high morbidity. Stress negatively affects for MDD development, whereby transport of stress-induced inflammatory mediators to the central nervous system (CNS) is associated with the etiology of mood disorders. Muscone is a pharmacologically active ingredient isolated from musk, with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. We hypothesized that muscone may ameliorate depression-like behavior by regulating inflammatory responses. To test this hypothesis, we used the chronic restraint stress (CRS) depression model, and CRS mice

Severe pustular eruption associated with imatinib and voriconazole in a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia.

Adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) and hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGPRT) are two structurally related enzymes involved in purine recycling in humans. Inherited mutations that suppress HGPRT activity are associated with Lesch-Nyhan disease (LND), a rare X-linked metabolic and neurological disorder in children, characterized by hyperuricemia, dystonia, and compulsive self-injury. To date, no treatment is available for these neurological defects and no animal model recapitulates all symptoms of LND patients. Here, we studied LND-related mechanisms in the fruit fly. By c

Dealing with loss: food and eating in women with ovarian cancer on parenteral nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Malignant bowel obstruction is a common complication of ovarian cancer, resulting in limited oral intake. Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) may be offered to patients in this condition to meet nutritional requirements. However, it is not known how they experience being unable to eat. The present study reports how patients related to food when receiving HPN. METHODS: The investigation was a qualitative study underpinned by phenomenology with women with advanced ovarian cancer in bowel obstruction receiving parenteral nutrition. Interview transcripts were analysed thematically guided

Cooking without thinking: How understanding cooking as a practice can shed new light on inequalities in healthy eating.

In the UK the way we eat has become the biggest cause of preventable illness and death, placing a huge burden on our health system. Studies have found this is particularly true for those in more deprived areas. In the context of cheap ultra-processed foods, public health interventions to reduce this healthy eating gap often promote cooking 'from scratch' as a means of making increased fruit and vegetable consumption affordable on a tight budget. However the effectiveness of such healthy cooking interventions is debated. This research sought to address this problem by using practice theory to h

Eating alone and metabolic syndrome: A population-based Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014.

Eating alone has been an emerging social concern in modern life. However, there is little research on the association between eating alone and Metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to assess the association between eating alone and the MetS and to identify whether sociodemographic factors modify this association. This study included 7725 adults (≥19 years) who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2013-2014. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used for assessing the association of eating alone (none, 1 time/day, and ≥2 times/day) with Me
