Role of zinc in female reproduction.

Zinc is a critical component in a number of conserved processes that regulate female germ cell growth, fertility, and pregnancy. During follicle development, a sufficient intracellular concentration of zinc in the oocyte maintains meiotic arrest at prophase I until the germ cell is ready to undergo maturation. An adequate supply of zinc is necessary for the oocyte to form a fertilization-competent egg as dietary zinc deficiency or chelation of zinc disrupts maturation and reduces the oocyte quality. Following sperm fusion to the egg to initiate the acrosomal reaction, a quick release of zinc,

Dietary choline levels modify the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure in rats.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can cause a range of physical and behavioral alterations; however, the outcome among children exposed to alcohol during pregnancy varies widely. Some of this variation may be due to nutritional factors. Indeed, higher rates of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are observed in countries where malnutrition is prevalent. Epidemiological studies have shown that many pregnant women throughout the world may not be consuming adequate levels of choline, an essential nutrient critical for brain development, and a methyl donor. In this study, we examined the influence of

Gene expression profiling of rubella virus infected primary endothelial cells of fetal and adult origin.

BACKGROUND: Rubella virus (RV) infection is usually a mild illness in children and adults. However, maternal infection during the first trimester of pregnancy can lead to congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in the infant. Fetuses with CRS show damage to the endothelium of the heart and blood vessels; thus, it has been speculated that the clinical manifestations associated with CRS may be a result of endothelial cells persistently infected with RV. Here, we compared the effects of RV infection on gene expression in primary endothelial cells of fetal (HUVEC) and of adult (HSaVEC) origin by transcr

Increased anxiety-like behavior but no cognitive impairments in adult rats exposed to constant light conditions during perinatal development.

BACKGROUND: Shift-work is suggested to affect fetal development negatively. In particular, maternal hormonal disturbance arising from sleep deprivation or circadian rhythm changes may disturb fetal growth or lead to complications during pregnancy. Exposure to constant light is an environmental stressor that can affect the circadian system and has been shown to induce neurochemical and behavioral changes when used during the prenatal and/or postnatal period in experimental animals. However, studies investigating long-term effects of constant light in the offspring are sparse. METHODS: An accid…

Morphological and morphometric study on sphenoid and basioccipital ossification in normal human fetuses.

Congenital anomalies of the brain frequently correspond to cranial base anomalies, and a detailed description of morphology and individual variations in the developing cranial base is of clinical importance for diagnosing anomalies. Development of the human cranial base has been studied using dissection, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. We here examined development of the normal human fetal cranial base using bone staining, which allows for direct observation of the ossification centers and precise three-dimensional measuremen

Prenatal choline supplementation mitigates behavioral alterations associated with prenatal alcohol exposure in rats.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure can alter physical and behavioral development, leading to a range of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Despite warning labels, pregnant women continue to drink alcohol, creating a need to identify effective interventions to reduce the severity of alcohol's teratogenic effects. Choline is an essential nutrient that influences brain and behavioral development. Recent studies indicate that choline supplementation can reduce the teratogenic effects of developmental alcohol exposure. The present study examined whether choline supplementation during prenatal eth

Placental vascular compromise in jejunoileal atresia.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The mechanisms of intrauterine vascular disruptions that result in the development of jejunoileal atresia (JIA) are not fully understood. Monochorionic twinning with fetal death of a cotwin is known to be correlated with the development of JIA in the survivor through placental communication. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether other placental vascular compromises might contribute to the development of JIA. METHODS: Forty-five newborns (23 boys and 22 girls) who were treated for JIA at Tsukuba University Hospital from 1978 to 2003 were reviewed. Placental findings

Responsiveness to adipogenic agents in stromal-vascular cultures derived from lean and preobese pig fetuses: an ontogeny study.

Primary cultures of stromal-vascular (S-V) cells from adipose tissue were used to evaluate characteristics of preadipocytes from lean and preobese fetuses at several ages (50, 75, and 110 d). In insulin-supplemented (1 microM) cultures (serum free) there was a significant age x fetal genotype interaction (P less than .01) for glycerol-phosphate dehydrogenase specific activity (GPDH); GPDH activity was genotype-dependent at 110 d (preobese greater than lean). The responses of S-V cultures (preadipocyte development) to 2% pig serum and to insulin (serum free) were similar. Main effects of genoty

Fetal Assessment Suite (FetAS): a web-based platform for automatic fetal MRI analysis using AI.

Fetal MRI provides high-resolution, three-dimensional imaging with superior soft tissue contrast, offering critical diagnostic insights that complement ultrasound, particularly in cases of suspected abnormalities. However, its interpretation remains labour-intensive and highly dependent on subspecialized radiological expertise, which limits accessibility and contributes to diagnostic delays. To address these challenges, we present the Fetal Assessment Suite (FetAS), a secure, web-based platform designed to streamline and standardize fetal MRI analysis. FetAS automates key tasks, including arti

Nomogram for fetal limb bones in Chinese ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: To construct fetal limb bone nomograms in the Chinese ethnic population. METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional study on singleton pregnancies between 12 and 37 weeks of gestation. Femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, ulna, radius, and foot length were measured in a standardized manner by one of the three sonographers. Each fetus's measurements were only included once and those who developed maternal or fetal complications were excluded. Fractional polynomial regression model was used to obtain the 3rd, 10th, 50th, 90th, and 97th centiles for each of the limb measurement. Z-scor

3137 fetuses in 33 years: What we have learned from the Wisconsin stillbirth service program.

The Wisconsin Stillbirth Service Program (WiSSP) provided expert review by a dysmorphologist for community-acquired data on 3137 fetal deaths between 1983 and 2017. Intrinsic fetal causes were consistently identified in about 25% while placental and maternal causes were recognized with increasing frequency as attention was shifted from a primarily fetal to a multifocal approach. Identification of causes increased from 40% to 78% and in about half of cases results of the review altered recurrence risk and/or future pregnancy management. Banked data from WiSSP formed the basis of 24 publications

Human fetal infection with parvovirus B19: maternal infection time in gestation, viral persistence and fetal prognosis.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the relation between the time of parvovirus B19 (B19) infection in pregnancy and fetal outcome, including the viral persistence in the fetus. METHODS: Among 57 pairs showing serologic and/or virologic evidence of maternal and fetal B19 infection between 1986 and 1999 in Japan, 13 maternal-fetal pairs with the time of maternal B19 infection documented were retrospectively evaluated for fetal outcome and viral persistence. RESULTS: Nonimmune hydrops occurred at 23, 21 and 26 gestational weeks (gw) in three fetuses as a result of their mothers' symptomatic infection (eryth

Effect of a neuroactive steroid infused into the cerebral ventricles of fetal sheep in utero using small infusion volumes.

Placental progesterone metabolites may influence fetal behaviour during late gestation. We have investigated the effect of the neuroactive metabolite, pregnanolone, on the sleep/awake behaviour of fetal sheep. These studies can only be effectively performed in unanesthetized animals with chronically implanted leads and catheters. The relatively large internal volumes of these catheters raises problems for cerebroventriclear infusions. Therefore, we developed a device with negligible deadspace ( approximately 10 microl) consisting of a ventricular cannula attached to a small cap which allowed t

Adverse outcome after prenatal diagnosis of gastroschisis: the role of fetal monitoring.

Fifty-seven fetuses with gastroschisis presented between 1982 and 1995 were studied by retrospective review of medical records. There were three late intrauterine deaths (IUD). Fetal distress, as determined by reduced fetal movements or abnormal cardiotopograph (CTG), was encountered in 23 of the 54 liveborn infants (43%), all of whom had delivery expedited either by emergency caesarean section (n = 19) or induction (n = 4). Six infants had abnormal neurological outcome: two died in the neonatal period of severe perinatal brain injury, neonatal fits were observed in four, two of whom developed

The Delphi definition for selective fetal growth restriction may not improve detection of pathologic growth discordance in monochorionic twins.

BACKGROUND: A consensus definition of selective fetal growth restriction in monochorionic diamniotic twins was recently proposed following a Delphi procedure involving an international panel of experts. The new definition augments the traditional definition with additional sonographic criteria. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether the augmentations of the "Delphi definition" identified additional morbidity and mortality compared with a traditional definition. Furthermore, we sought to determine the benefit of each definition in identifying pathologic growth restriction relative to uncomp

Treatment of congenital pulmonary airway malformation induced hydrops fetalis via percutaneous sclerotherapy.

Large type II and III congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAMs) can cause pulmonary hypoplasia, non-immune hydrops fetalis and fetal demise. Fetal intervention is indicated if hydrops fetalis develops. In this report, we describe three cases of type II and III CPAMs complicated by hydrops and treated with percutaneous sclerotherapy by ethanolamine injection into the tumor. All 3 cases demonstrated reduction in size of the CPAM and resolution of the hydrops with subsequent delivery at term. We believe that fetal percutaneous sclerotherapy can be used as a minimally invasive palliative s

Mitochondrial respiration is lower in the intrauterine growth-restricted fetal sheep heart.

Fetuses affected by intrauterine growth restriction have an increased risk of developing heart disease and failure in adulthood. Compared with controls, late gestation intrauterine growth-restricted (IUGR) fetal sheep have fewer binucleated cardiomyocytes, reflecting a more immature heart, which may reduce mitochondrial capacity to oxidize substrates. We hypothesized that the late gestation IUGR fetal heart has a lower capacity for mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Left (LV) and right (RV) ventricles from IUGR and control (CON) fetal sheep at 90% gestation were harvested. Mitochondrial

[Prenatal diagnosis. Review, personal and prospective studies].

1. In a review of methods developed for the identification of fetal malformations, the technique, risks and results of amniocentesis are presented. 2. Large series already published have demonstrated the relative simplicity and feasibility of the procedure as well as current indications for its utilization. These include the detection of chromosomal anomalies, the determination of sex (in certain sex-linked disorders), documentation of enzymatic and metabolic deficiencies, and the demonstration of open lesions of the neural tube by appropriate techniques. 3. Experience with over 500 cases pers
