The sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, causes severe dermatitis in infected sheep with severe welfare and production implications. Eleven patients aged 7 to 58 years were placed on assisted circulation with Pierce (2 cases) or Abiomed (9 cases) external prosthetic ventricles as a bridge to cardiac transplantation. The indications were terminal cardiac failure following cardiomyopathy (7 cases), decompensated ischemic heart disease (3 cases) and subacute post-transplantation rejection (1 case). The duration of the assisted circulation ranged from 24 hours to 11 days. All patients were transplanted but 3 died after transplantation (27%). Two patients with von Willebrand's disease underwent major surgery, the first had aortic valve replacement and the second a total hip replacement. Clinically, the best practical test for monitoring the dose of cryoprecipitate necessary to maintain haemostasis was the bleeding time. The response to coagulation factor replacement in von Willebrand's disease is extremely variable, and it is necessary to maintain close coagulation monitoring until the patient's surgical condition is satisfactory for discharge from hospital.

This report describes animal experiments on the use of human fibrin adhesives to close vesicovaginal fistulas artificially created in 20 rabbits. In one group of 10 animals one of the usual closure techniques was supplemented by application of fibrin adhesive to the suture line, whereas in the control group of 10 animals the fistula was closed using only the same usual suture technique. When compared to 40 control subjects and to 13 patients with mitral stenosis (8 of them commissurotomized) antithrombin III (AT III) activity, assessed by a clotting technique, was found to be slightly but significantly depressed in the 18 patients with prosthetic valves in mitral position. Platelet-type von Willebrand disease (vWD) and pseudo-vWD are two recently described intrinsic platelet defects characterized by enhanced ristocetin-induced agglutination in platelet-rich plasma. The frequent occurrence of abnormal fibrin polymerisation in patients with liver disease has recently been reported.
