Dynamic urethral pressure profilometry pressure transmission ratio determinations after continence surgery: understanding the mechanism of success, failure, and complications.

Twenty-two women who had previously undergone continence surgery for the correction of stress urinary incontinence were evaluated with dynamic urethral pressure profilometry and had bladder-to-urethra pressure transmission ratios calculated. Eight of the subjects had recurrent or persistent genuine stress incontinence (group 1), seven had detrusor instability (group 2), and seven had normal continence and detrusor function (group 3). In addition, we evaluated ten subjects with detrusor instability but no previous surgery (group 4). There were clear and significant differences in pressure trans

Social Motivation in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Using Eye-Tracking, Behavioral Tasks, Self- and Parent-Reports, and Qualitative Insights.

Social motivation diminishment is a core autism feature, yet prior research has been inconsistent, focusing on single dimensions and overlooking heterogeneity in motivational expressions among autistic individuals. This mixed-methods study compared social motivation in 104 individuals with autism (male: 74, Mage = 18.55 years) and 192 non-autistic peers (male: 101, Mage = 16.65 years), using eye-tracking and behavioral tasks, self-/parent-reports, and qualitative analysis of open-ended responses. Quantitative analyses revealed autistic participants had lower self-determined motivation, driven

Oscillatory Traveling Waves During Visual Entrainment in Autistic and Non-Autistic Adults.

Neural oscillations and traveling waves play a crucial role in cognition. In scalp electroencephalography (EEG), waves typically travel along the anterior-posterior axis: forward waves (occipital-to-frontal) predominate during sensory stimulation, while backward waves (frontal-to-occipital) emerge during rest and top-down modulation. Within the predictive coding framework, backward waves reflect predictive signals, whereas forward waves convey sensory processes and prediction errors. In this study, we investigated traveling wave dynamics during a visual entrainment task in non-autistic and aut

The value of blood flow velocity and pressure gradient in differentiating patients with different types of heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Patients with different types of heart failure (HF) exhibit varying rates of blood flow through cardiac chambers and pressure gradients across the aortic valve, attributed to differing degrees of myocardial contractility. Assessment of these dynamics offers insights into early HF diagnosis. This study aimed to analyze left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) blood flow parameters, specifically peak blood flow velocity and pressure gradient derived from four-dimensional flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (4D flow CMR), and to evaluate 4D flow CMR's utility in distinguishing HF type

Difficulties in Differential Diagnosis of Thyrotoxicosis: Clinical Case

Abstract Introduction: Thyrotoxicosis (T) develops as a result of persistent excess of thyroid hormones (TH). There are two groups of diseases that are fundamentally different in pathogenesis. The first group includes those in which the production of TH increases. Diseases of the second group are accompanied by T caused by destruction of the thyroid gland tissue. Therapeutic approaches for different pathogenetic types of T are different, therefore, a careful differential diagnosis of T is necessary, even if at first glance the diagnosis seems obvious. Clinical Case: A 35-year-old patient consu

[Slowing down the flow of facial information enhances facial scanning in children with autism spectrum disorders: A pilot eye tracking study].

OBJECTIVE: Face and gaze avoidance are among the most characteristic and salient symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Studies using eye tracking highlighted early and lifelong ASD-specific abnormalities in attention to face such as decreased attention to internal facial features. These specificities could be partly explained by disorders in the perception and integration of rapid and complex information such as that conveyed by facial movements and more broadly by biological and physical environment. Therefore, we wish to test whether slowing down facial dynamics may improve the way ch

Image-Guided In Vivo Tracking of Splenocyte Dynamics Using Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide-Based Nanoparticles in a Rodent Model.

The spleen serves as a critical reservoir of immune cells that play a key role in chronic inflammation and malignancy. While migration of immune cells from the spleen to the tumor immune microenvironment has been described, the dynamics of this process are poorly understood. Tracking the in vivo dynamics could provide valuable insights for understanding tumor immune biology, as well as potentially improving immunotherapy-based treatment regimens. In this study, splenocytes were labeled with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles conjugated with protamine-indocyanine green (SPIOpICG)

Network Toxicology and Machine Learning Uncover BPA-Driven Molecular Mechanisms in Atopic Dermatitis.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common industrial chemical primarily used in the manufacture of plastics, and it has been found in more than 90% of people worldwide. As an endocrine disruptor, BPA can impair reproduction, development, immunity, metabolism, and cognition; it also disturbs immune balance and thus fosters chronic inflammation. A number of population-based studies have indicated a link between environmental BPA exposure and atopic dermatitis (AD). Nevertheless, the detailed molecular pathways connecting BPA to AD remain poorly understood. AD is the leading chronic recurrent inflammatory sk

Anterior insular co-activation patterns associated with stress markers in chronic primary pain.

Chronic primary pain occurs without an identifiable causal disease and is marked by persistent pain, emotional distress and functional disability. The anterior insular cortex, involved in salience processing and integration of sensory, emotional and cognitive aspects of pain, has been implicated in neural processes linking pain and stress responses. This study investigates whether specific brain state dynamics, using the anterior insula as a seed region, are associated with chronic primary pain and examines their associations with pain- and stress-related measures. Resting-state functional MRI

Habit learning shapes activity dynamics in the central nucleus of the amygdala.

A habit develops as a motivated behavior that is strengthened by extended experience and feedback. While the performance component of a habit is relatively well studied, being linked to action-related neural dynamics in the basal ganglia and beyond, neural mechanisms for outcome feedback during habit formation, the reinforcement component, remain unknown. One candidate for this feedback mechanism is in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA). Here, we identify CeA neural firing dynamics in male and female rats that serve to promote habit formation. We used a novel maze task with rewards of d

Telomere dynamics are influenced by sleep, sleep variability and circadian rhythms in older adults with or without alzheimer's risk.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances have been related to cognitive decline and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). These disruptions are also closely associated with biological ageing processes. Telomere shortening, a key marker of cellular ageing, has been implicated in various age-related diseases, including AD. Although sleep disturbances have been linked to shorter telomere length (TL), the effects of sleep, its variability, and circadian rhythms on telomere dynamics (over 18 months) remain unknown. Furthermore, the interplay between these factors and AD risk has

Balancing patient choice and health system capacity: a system dynamics model of dialysis in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: As universal health coverage schemes mature, governments often seek to improve patient choice, whilst ensuring that services are appropriate, high-quality, and financially sustainable, especially for high-cost interventions like dialysis. Policy levers to manage supply and demand for services have shown mixed results across contexts, highlighting the complex interactions and feedback effects that shape health system behaviours. Following a policy change in Thailand aiming to improve patient choice for dialysis, we developed a system dynamics model of dialysis demand and supply, to

Integrating multi-dimensional data to reveal the mechanisms and molecular targets of baikening granules for treatment of pediatric influenza.

BACKGROUND: Children are the main group affected by the influenza virus, posing challenges to their health. The high risk of viral variability, drug resistance, and drug development leads to a scarcity of therapeutic drugs. Baikening (BKN) granules are a marketed traditional Chinese medicine used to treat children's lung heat, asthma, whooping cough, etc. Therefore, exploring the potential mechanisms of BKN in treating pediatric influenza is of great significance for discovering new drugs. METHODS: Through the database, we obtained differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between pediatric influ
