We treated 28 cases of Flexor Pollicis Longus tendon injury by Rouhier's technique between 1989 and 1996 and reviewed 25 cases, with a minimum follow-up of 6 months and maximum of 8 years. Nine patients presented an associated collateral nerve section. We used the International Federation of Hand Surgery Societies (IFSSH) topographic classification. The surgical technique consisted of Flexor Pollicis Longus lengthening and transosseous pull-out in 16 cases and distal suture in 9. The immobilization time ranged from 4 to 7 weeks. The results were evaluated according to Tubiana's classification,

Human parvovirus B19 (B19) DNA was detected in the synovial tissues in 30 of 39 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and infrequently in those with osteoarthritis and traumatic joints. On the other hand, the expression of the B19 antigen VP-1 was specific (27/27) in RA synovium with active synovial lesions, but not in osteoarthritis and controls. The target cells of B19 were macrophages, follicular dendritic cells, T cells, and B cells, but not synovial lining cells in the synovium. B19-negative bone marrow cells, tonsil cells, and macrophage cell line U-937 cells became positive for the e

Association between primary hyperparathyroidism and Paget's disease of bone is extremely uncommon, despite the relatively high incidence of both entities. The mechanism of this association remains unknown. Dramatic changes in parathyroid function are found in patients with Paget's disease and, on the other hand, the evolution of Paget's disease is influenced by parathyroid functional disorders. We reviewed 175 patients with Paget's disease and 60 with primary hyperparathyroidism, followed during 10 years. We only found 5 cases with the association of the two diseases. Approximately equal numbe

The addition of 2 mM sodium butyrate to monolayers enhances differentiation of Ishikawa endometrial cells. Cells from this cell line have been shown to enlarge and lift off the dish into dome structures over a period of 24-48 h in response to a factor in fetal bovine serum (FBS) [Fleming, 1995 J Cell Biochem in press]. When butyrate is added to monolayers, together with FBS, three- to fourfold higher numbers of differentiated structures, domes and predomes, can be counted. It had previously been shown [Holinka et al., 1986b] that estradiol induces heat stable placental alkaline phosphatase in

Eight patients underwent partial radiocarpal arthrodesis for various wrist disorders. There were 5 men and 3 women, whose age at operation ranged from 33 to 59 years with an average of 44 years. The indications for operation included post-traumatic changes secondary to distal radius fracture in 5 cases, Kienböck's disease in 1, Madelung's deformity in 1, and rheumatoid arthritis in 1. Arthrodesis was performed at the radiolunate joint in 5 cases, and at the radioscapholunate joint in 3 cases. In all cases, bone union was obtained within 3 months postoperatively. Postoperative wrist pain disapp

In order to evaluate the effects of low-dosage, 6-12 months course of oxandrolone treatment in constitutional delay of growth, we compared the growth responses on treatment, the pattern of sexual development and pubertal growth events, up to final stature of 11 prepubertal boys, aged 10.6-14.1 yr, with those of 11 prepubertal, age-matched untreated controls. Treatment caused a significant increase of height velocity, from 4 to 9 cm/yr, and a significant acceleration of bone maturation, without affecting the timing of onset of puberty, the progression of sexual development or the onset of puber

The primary goal in reconstructing a gunshot wound to the face is identical to that for a major injury of the hand or lower extremity: primary healing of the soft tissue. This prevents the cascade of soft-tissue infection, further delay in healing, bone graft infection, and soft-tissue contracture. Current craniofacial techniques and methods of fixation allow for concomitant bony reconstruction without compromising primary healing of the soft tissues. The result is not only that the soft tissue is healed but also that the original contour, stretch, and pliability are maintained. Once the soft

Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare disease leading to complete ossification of the muscular system. Very little information about this rare disease and its anesthetic implications has appeared in anesthetic literature. This disease is felt to have an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and is usually associated with anomalies of the hands and feet. Afflicted patients are frequently misdiagnosed in childhood as having a rheumatologic disorder. Later in life (as true bone is formed in striated muscle, ligaments, and fascia), the correct diagnosis becomes obvious. Although muscles of

The recommended classification of the histiocytosis syndromes in children is as follows: 1. Langerhans' cell histiocytoses. 2. histiocytoses of mononuclear phagocytes. 3. neoplastic histiocytoses. The previous term, histiocytosis X, including eosinophilic granuloma of bone, the Hand-Schüller-Christian syndrome and Letterer-Siwe's disease, is now more correctly called Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) since the infiltrating cell in histiocytosis X both histologically and immunophenotypically is identified as the Langerhans' cell. Local and generalized LCH differmarkedly with respect to treat

During the course of the daily practice of forensic pathology, little or no attention is generally devoted to the tongue (if it is even removed at all during the autopsy examination) except in a handful of relatively well-defined situations. In some other instances, such as injuries involving the neck and laryngopharyngeal organs, the tongue may be removed, but examined in only a cursory manner, since the serious pathology which caused or contributed to death is most often located in adjacent structures. While the postmortem examination was being carried out on a victim of ligature strangulati

Radial polydactyly, a common congenital problem, most often occurs as thumb duplication. It appears in pentadactylous, polydactylous, and hypoplastic hands and is simulated by complex syndactyly. Classically, there are three categories for radial polydactyly: severe hypoplasia, partial duplication, and total duplication (easily confused with pseudoduplication). The common second category is subcategorized by Wassel's seven types. Management techniques vary with these classifications. Until a decade ago, the standard recommendation was simple excision of one of the duplicates. Problems of defor

Five patients with polyarthritis and neutropenia had numerous circulating large granular lymphocytes with a phenotype attributed to immature natural killer cells. All five had splenomegaly and recurrent infections. Arthritis was most prominent at the wrists and hands, and all patients were considered to have atypical cases of Felty's syndrome. Antinuclear antibodies, rheumatoid factor, antineutrophil antibodies, and immune complexes were detected in most patients. Bone marrow biopsies revealed a maturation arrest at the myelocyte stage and lymphoid infiltrates. Large lymphocytes with azurophil

Two cases of peliosis hepatis, treated with a large dose of predonine for aplastic anemia and multiple myeloma, respectively, were reported. Case 1 showed no abnormal liver function, but, in Case 2 hepatomegaly, retention of ICG, and elevation of LDH level despite the normal serum transaminase were noted. In both cases, peliotic lesions were incidentally observed at autopsy. In Case 1, the lesion was localized in the right lobe only, but, in Case 2 the lesion was present throughout the entire lobes of the liver involving also a part of the spleen and bone marrow of the sternum. A continent vesicostomy has been developed by the use of a tubed bladder flap brought to the skin superficial to the pubic bone and with the stoma sited in the labio-clitoral fold, usually on the right, in right-handed patients. This technique has found application, initially in cases of vesicovaginal fistula, where the continence mechanism has been completely destroyed, and later has been applied to cases of neurogenic bladder due to meningomyelocoele. This operation has been performed on 20 patients. With the exception of our first patient, a technical failure, all patients have been fully c

Sequential immunological and cytokinetic studies were done on individual lymphoid cells in the peripheral blood of 10 children with previously untreated acute lymphoid leukemia (8 non-T--non-B, 1 T, and 1 B-ALL) and on lymphoid bone marrow cells (4 non-T--non-B ALL). The results obtained suggest that some, but not all, of the children considered to have non-T--non-B ALL had proliferating leukemic cells with surface immunoglobulin (Sig) in the peripheral blood. The absolute number of these SIg+ proliferating leukemic cells, however, was always smaller than the absolute number of SIg- proliferat

The pharyngeal recess, first described in 1842 by Mayer, is a cavity in the middle of the nasopharynx, just between the nasal septum and the ventral tuberculum atlantis. It was assumed to be an excavation of the pharyngeal mucous membrane often persistantly fixed to the embryonic spine (Chorda dorsalis). It might be therefore, looked upon as a malformation. The recess is always stuffed with mucous membrane of the pharyngeal tract and ends next to the adenoids. It might pass into the occipital bone as an epithelialized cleft surrounded by connective tissue. Cystic transformation of the recess w

A new, specific, and simple method for the determination of delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) synthetase activity in human bone marrow cells has been developed. ALA synthetase of erythroblasts was partially purified so as to permit the use of [(14)C]succinyl-CoA as a substrate for this enzyme. In this enzyme preparation there were negligible activities of succinyl-CoA hydrolase, alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, and succinyl-CoA synthetase and there was no activity of ALA dehydrase. The ALA formed from [(14)C]succinyl-CoA has been isolated by column chromatography. Radioactivity in the eluate f

BACKGROUND: Complete distal biceps ruptures are primarily treated with direct repair; however, patients with chronic ruptures, poor tissue quality, or tendon deficiency may need to be treated with reconstruction. Prior studies have shown dual intramedullary cortical button fixation has the highest load to failure and unicortical fixation decreases the risk for injuring the posterior interosseous nerve intraoperatively. The tension-slide technique aids in tensioning the distal biceps tendon repair and significantly decreases bone-to-tendon gap formation. The aim of this study is to present the

BACKGROUND: Multi-comminuted, intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus still pose a challenge to modern orthopedics due to unsatisfactory treatment results and a high percentage (over 50%) of postoperative complications. When surgical treatment is chosen, such fractures are fixed using two plates with locking screws, which can be used in three spatial configurations: either parallel or one of two perpendicular variants (posterolateral and posteromedial). The evaluation of the fracture healing conditions for these plate configurations is unambiguous. The contradictions between the conclu
