Relationship between pulmonary, cough, and swallowing functions in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Evaluations of pulmonary, cough, and swallow function are frequently performed to assess disease progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), yet the relationship between these functions remains unknown. We therefore aimed to determine relationships between these measures in individuals with ALS. METHODS: One hundred individuals with ALS underwent standardized tests: forced vital capacity (FVC), maximum expiratory/inspiratory pressure (MEP, MIP), voluntary cough peak expiratory flow (PEF), and videofluoroscopic swallow evaluation (VF). Duplicate raters completed inde

Oocyte Cryopreservation in Transgender and Gender-Diverse Individuals With or Without Prior Testosterone Use.

To evaluate oocyte cryopreservation among transgender and gender-diverse adolescents and young adults with or without prior testosterone exposure, we performed a retrospective cohort study of all patients younger than age 35 years referred for oocyte cryopreservation through our formal fertility-preservation program from 2014 to 2023. The number of patients referred and pursuing fertility preservation increased over time. Among the 93 patients referred, 37 pursued oocyte cryopreservation (31 testosterone-naïve and six testosterone-exposed). Among the latter, neither length of time on testoster

An Improved Statistical Modeling Approach to Individual Anticholinergic Drug Use Trend Analysis.

Anticholinergic (AC) drugs are commonly prescribed to older adults for treating diseases and chronic conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, urinary incontinence, gastrointestinal disorder, or simply pain and allergy. The high prevalence of AC drug use can have a detrimental effect on the mental health of older adults. We aim to improve the prediction of future trends of AC drug use at the individual level, with pharmacy refill data. The individual drug use data presents challenges in the modeling, such as data being discrete-valued with excess zeros and having significant u

Metabolic effect of adrenaline infusion in people with type 1 diabetes and healthy individuals.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: As a result of early loss of the glucagon response, adrenaline is the primary counter-regulatory hormone in type 1 diabetes. Diminished adrenaline responses to hypoglycaemia due to counter-regulatory failure are common in type 1 diabetes, and are probably induced by exposure to recurrent hypoglycaemia, however, the metabolic effects of adrenaline have received less research attention, and also there is conflicting evidence regarding adrenaline sensitivity in type 1 diabetes. Thus, we aimed to investigate the metabolic response to adrenaline and explore whether it is modified b

Individualized prediction of conditional survival for colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Conditional survival (CS) considers the time already survived after surgery and may provide additional survival information. The authors sought to construct and validate novel conditional survival nomograms for the prediction of conditional overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) of colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) patients. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with stage I-III SRCC between 2010 and 2019 were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. The formula calculating CS was: CS(x|y) = S(x+y)/S(x), where S(x) represents the

Oxidative Stress-Induced Damage to RNA and DNA and Mortality in Individuals with Psychiatric Illness.

IMPORTANCE: All-cause mortality and the risk for age-related medical disease is increased in individuals with psychiatric illness, but the underlying biological mechanisms are not known. Oxidative stress on nucleic acids (DNA and RNA; NA-OXS) is a molecular driver of aging and a potential pathophysiological mechanism in a range of age-related disorders. OBJECTIVE: To study the levels of markers of NA-OXS in a large cohort of community-dwelling individuals with and without psychiatric illness and to evaluate their association with prospective all-cause mortality. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIP

Alteration of fractional anisotropy in preterm-born individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUD: Neurological disorders are common in preterm (PT) born individuals. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) effectively detect microstructural white matter (WM) abnormalities in the brain. We conducted this systematic review to integrate the findings of TBSS studies to determine the most consistent WM alterations in PT born individuals. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Science Direct were searched. DTI studies using TBSS in PT born individuals were screened up to October 2022. The systematic review included studies reporting alt

Large Individual Differences in Functional Connectivity in the Context of Major Depression and Antidepressant Pharmacotherapy.

Clinical studies of major depression (MD) generally focus on group effects, yet interindividual differences in brain function are increasingly recognized as important and may even impact effect sizes related to group effects. Here, we examine the magnitude of individual differences in relation to group differences that are commonly investigated (e.g., related to MD diagnosis and treatment response). Functional MRI data from 107 participants (63 female, 44 male) were collected at baseline, 2, and 8 weeks during which patients received pharmacotherapy (escitalopram, N = 68) and controls (N = 39)

Healthism, rural individualism and self-help: youth mental health in Northwest Tasmania.

Rural Australian youth exhibit high rates of mental ill-health, exacerbated by reduced access to mental health services. While the need for innovative solutions is well-established rural youth themselves are frequently excluded from the dialogue, creating a significant gap in evidence and the development of relevant service provision that reflects young people's lived experiences. Drawing on the concepts of individualism and healthism and research highlighting the continuing importance of relationships and trust in the lives of young people in a digital society, we aim to better understand how

Effectiveness of aerobic exercise on cognition in individuals with traumatic brain injury: A systematic review.

Cognitive deficits are among the most common impairments in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Aerobic exercise is a repetitive and structured physical activity that influences structural and functional brain alterations differently. This review aims to examine the effects of aerobic exercise on cognition in individuals with TBI. PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, SCOPUS, MEDLINE, and Web of Science were searched from inception to December 20, 2023. Studies designed as randomized controlled trials (RCT), clinical controlled trials (CCT), and pilot studies included individuals with a confirmed

Neural activation signatures in individuals with subclinical depression: A task-fMRI meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (task-fMRI) investigations have documented abnormal brain activation associated with subclinical depression (SD), defined as a clinically relevant level of depressive symptoms that does not meet the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder. However, these task-fMRI studies have not reported consistent conclusions. Performing a voxel-based meta-analysis of task-fMRI studies may yield reliable findings. METHODS: We extracted the peak coordinates and t values of included studies and analyzed brain activation between

Overuse of familiar phrases by individuals with Williams syndrome masks differences in language processing.

We investigated whether individuals with Williams Syndrome (WS) produce language with a bias towards statistical properties of word combinations rather than grammatical rules, resulting in an overuse of holistically stored, familiar phrases. We analysed continuous speech samples from English children with WS (n = 12), typically developing (TD) controls matched on chronological age (n = 15) and TD controls matched on language age (n = 14). Alongside word count, utterance length, grammatical complexity, and morphosyntactic errors, we measured familiarity of expressions by computing collocation s
