THE EFFECT OF SECONDARY INFECTIONS ON EXPERIMENTAL TRACHOMA.

The possibility suggested itself, in view of the theories already advanced with regard to the rô1e of secondary infections in the later manifestations of trachoma (1), that the implantation of common bacteria on the conjunctivae of monkeys already having well marked characteristic granulosis lesions might give rise to a condition showing less predominance of the follicular reaction and more of the hyperemic granulopapillary effect. We believe we have succeeded, by a suitable technique, in doing this and in producing thereby in the experimental animals a condition closely resembling the florid …

Insights Into the Seroprevalence, Clinical Spectrum, and Laboratory Features of Dengue and Chikungunya Mono-Infections vs. Co-infections During 2022-2023.

Background Central India is hyperendemic for dengue and chikungunya virus infections, with yearly outbreaks being recorded. As these infections are clinically overlapping, co-infection of these viruses poses a diagnostic challenge. Therefore, it is imperative to identify them using serological or molecular tests. In this study, seroprevalence of dengue and chikungunya mono-infection as well as co-infections was estimated in suspected patients presented at our tertiary care center. Also, we compared the biochemical and other lab parameters of all the dengue and chikungunya mono-infected and co-…

Clinical Features of Candida Catheter-related Bloodstream Infections and Persistent Infections Associated with Early Catheter Reinsertion: A 6-year Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Catheter-related persistent Candida infections (CRPCI) may develop after Candida catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) due to colonization of the newly inserted catheter. However, the optimal timing for new catheter insertion remains controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical features of CRBSI due to Candida species and CRPCI. This was a retrospective study conducted in a teaching hospital in Japan. METHODS: We retrospectively collected clinical information on hospitalized patients diagnosed with Candida CRBSIs by catheter tip culture from 2015 …

Bovine coronavirus infections in Turkey: molecular analysis of the full-length spike gene sequences of viruses from digestive and respiratory infections.

Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) can be spread by animal activity. Although cattle farming is widespread in Turkey, there are few studies of BCoV. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current situation regarding BCoV in Turkey. This is the first study reporting the full-length nucleotide sequences of BCoV spike (S) genes in Turkey. Samples were collected from 119 cattle with clinical signs of respiratory (n = 78) or digestive tract (n = 41) infection on different farms located across widely separated provinces in Turkey. The samples were screened for BCoV using RT-nested PCR targeting the N gene

Destination specific risks of acquisition of notifiable food- and waterborne infections or sexually transmitted infections among Finnish international travellers, 1995-2015.

BACKGROUND: Overnight international travels made by Finns more than doubled during 1995-2015. To estimate risks and observe trends of travel-related notifiable sexually transmitted and food- and water-borne infections (STIs and FWIs) among travellers, we analysed national reports of gonorrhoea, syphilis, hepatitis A, shigellosis, campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis cases and related them to travel statistics. METHOD: Cases notified as travel-related to the Finnish infectious diseases register were used as numerators and overnight stays of Statistics Finland surveys as denominator. We calcula…

Polymicrobial infections reduce the cure rate in prosthetic joint infections: outcome analysis with two-stage exchange and follow-up ≥two years.

PURPOSE: Prosthetic joint infections (PJI) are a serious and challenging complication after total joint arthroplasty. According to the literature, most PJI are monomicrobial infections caused by gram-positive cocci. The number of polymicrobial PJI might be underrepresented in the literature and only limited data are available regarding the outcome of polymicrobial PJI. Our hypothesis was that polymicrobial PJI are associated with a reduced cure rate compared with monomicrobial PJI. METHODS: Routine clinical data were collected and analysed retrospectively as anonymised, aggregated data. A tot…

Incident cervical infections with high- and low-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections among mothers in the prospective Finnish Family HPV Study.

BACKGROUND: The knowledge on type specificity and factors that increase or decrease the risk of incident HPV-infections is important to better understand the dynamics of HPV-infections. METHODS: A series of 329 pregnant women were enrolled in Finnish Family HPV Study at 3rd trimester of pregnancy and followed-up for 6 years, during which 203 baseline HPV-negative women acquired incident HPV infection. Incidence times and incidence rates (IR) were calculated for 24 low-and high-risk HPV-types detected by Multiplex-HPV-genotyping at each visit. Poison regression was used to estimate predictors …

Role of fibronectin-binding proteins A and B in in vitro cellular infections and in vivo septic infections by Staphylococcus aureus.

Fibronectin-binding protein A (FnBPA) and FnBPB are important adhesins for Staphylococcus aureus infection. We constructed fnbA and/or fnbB mutant strains from S. aureus SH1000, which possesses intact rsbU, and studied the role of these adhesins in in vitro and in vivo infections. In intravenous infection, all fnb mutants caused a remarkable reduction in the colonization rate in kidneys and the mortality rate of mice. fnbB mutant caused a more severe decrease in body weight than that caused by fnbA mutant. Serum levels of interleukin-6 and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) activation in spleen cells w…
