Despite a control program, malaria incidence in Yunnan has increased and knowledge of vector bionomics is needed for efficient control. Multi-drug resistant Plasmodium falciparum necessitates alternatives to human landing catches as a means of studying vectors. Therefore CDC light traps with UV or ordinary incandescent bulbs were tested for 57 trap nights. 2,703 mosquitos were caught, including the vector species An. minimus and An. sinensis and the suspected vector An. maculatus. Scabies infestation is a community health problem worldwide. This is particularly true in overcrowded and unhygienic areas. Seven dogs were experimentally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei freshly recovered from a patient. The dogs after infestation were treated with a mixture of ivermectin and clorsulon (Ivomec Super). The dose given to a single dog was 1 ml/50 kg body weight. This is equivalent to 200 mcg ivermectin and 2 mg clorsulon per Kg body weight. Head lice are the most common human ectoparasite. Although an infectious disease, louse infection rarely cause physical problems other than an itchy scalp. Social stigma surrounding infection induces feelings of shame, anger and embarrassment for families. Preventative health education and promotion via screening can effectively reduce the incidences of lice infection. The Mosaic Model of Treatment is recommended as the most up-to-date treatment regime, suitable for use on all children.

The xanthene dye phloxine B (D&C Red #28) bait was sprayed against fruit flies in mango orchards in 1996 and 1997. The flies used for testing were Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens (Loew), West Indian fruit fly, Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart), and Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedeman). OBJECTIVE: Puzzled by the observation of occurrence of transient glycosuria in several patients admitted with organophosphate and carbamate compound poisoning, we undertook a critical analysis of this observation.
METHODS: Of the fifty-one consecutive patients admitted to the intensive care unit with organophosphate and carbamate compound poisoning, in 23 subjects the nature of the compound consumed was known; these were studied. BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid-induced paresthesia is frequently seen after dermal exposure to pyrethroids. Affected individuals experience a sensation of burning, tingling, itching, or numbness, most commonly in the face. This occurs 1-2 hours after the beginning of exposure and resolves spontaneously.
MECHANISMS: Paresthesia occurs as a result of a direct effect on intracutaneous nerve endings at very low pyrethroid doses. It is related to potency of the pyrethroid with pyrethroids without an alpha-cyano group generally showing the weakest effect.
CONCLUSION: Doses sufficient to cause paresthesia

Scabies and lice have afflicted man since ancient times. Permethrin is generally the treatment of choice for head lice and scabies, because of its residual effect. Toxicity and absorption are minimal. Ivermectin should be reserved for cases where permethrin fails.

We report the case of a 42-year-old man with symptomatic HIV infection (C3 CDC stage) who presented widespread hyperkeratotic skin lesions diagnosed as Norwegian scabies. The CD4 count was 87 cells/mm3. The patient has been the source of a nosocomial outbreak (20 individuals affected). He was treated successfully with combined topical treatment (permethrin 5% cream plus keratolytic agents) and oral ivermectin.

Goats naturally infested with Damalinia caprae lice were used to evaluate the efficacy of flumethrin pour-on. The maximum load of lice infestation was detected in the neck region. The LC50 value of flumethrin pour-on against D. caprae was found to be 119.35 ppm and the 95% confidence limits were calculated to be 104.10 and 136.85 ppm. Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality of children in central Tanzania. This study assessed the effect of house interior residual spraying with lambda-cyhalothrin on domestic tick infestation and the incidence of TBRF in children under 5 years old.
