Estimating bloodstain age using headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) and machine learning.

Bloodstain age, or the time since deposition (TSD), is crucial for reconstructing event timelines in forensic investigations. While traditional bloodstain analysis has limitations in reliability and methodology, Headspace-Gas Chromatography-Ion Mobility Spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) and machine learning (ML) provide a rapid, reliable, objective, and non-destructive solution. This study combined HS-GC-IMS with ML to systematically investigate the dynamic changes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the early, middle, and late stages of bloodstain aging. Blood samples from 10 healthy volunteer…

Activating Reversible Anionic Redox in Layered Oxide Cathodes for Highly Stable Sodium-Ion Batteries by Li/Nb Codoping.

The exploitation of high-capacity, long-cycle cathode materials with reversible anionic redox activity and robust structural stability remains an essential challenge for sodium-ion batteries. Herein, we address these limitations through Na-O-A configuration modulation in P2-Na0.67[NixLiyMn1-x-y]O2, which fundamentally enables reversible anionic redox reactions and ensures structural stability. The obtained P2-Na0.67Ni0.23Mn0.67Li0.08Nb0.02O2 cathodes deliver a remarkable reversible capacity of 158.4 mAh g-1 at 0.1C while maintaining extraordinary cycling stability with 98.2% capacity retention…

Electrochemically Derived Interfacial Li-Ion Conductor Enables High-Rate and Long-Cycling in Ni-Rich Layered Cathodes.

The fast-charging capability has become a critical performance requirement for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Layered high-nickel transition metal oxides (LiNixCoyMn(1-x-y)O2, x ≥ 0.8) have emerged as the most promising candidates due to their high specific capacity and energy density toward fast-charging LIBs. However, their practical implementation under fast-charging conditions is severely hindered by sluggish Li+ diffusion kinetics and interfacial instability. While a high Ni content effectively boosts capacity, it inevitably compromises structural robustness and accelerates…

Electrospun PPDO-BG/PVDF fibrous membranes with piezoelectric synergistic bioactive ion controlled release for enhanced bone repair.

Bone defects caused by trauma, infection or tumors remain challenging in clinics. Conventional methods cannot simultaneously regulate the electrical microenvironment, ionic microenvironment and extracellular matrix (ECM) microenvironment during osteogenesis. This study reports a piezoelectric and bioactive glass (BG)-loaded fibrous membrane (PVO) fabricated via electrospinning from polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO). The PVDF component provides piezoelectric stimulation to build the electrical microenvironment, while BG-loaded PPDO enables sustained ion release to opti

Tiny Droplets, Large Insights: Studying Peptide Aggregation with Droplet-Based Microfluidics Hyphenated with Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry.

Peptide and protein aggregation are hallmarks of numerous neurodegenerative diseases. However, the structural characterization of oligomeric intermediates remains challenging due to their low abundance, heterogenic nature, and complexity of coinciding and transient reaction networks. Confining reactions to microenvironments, such as picoliter droplets in droplet-based microfluidics (DBMFs), simplifies these networks, thereby enabling high-throughput analysis and controlled reaction kinetics. This study explores the integration of DBMF with ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) to probe the ag…

Metallothionein-Inspired Dual-Stage Ion-Regulatory Coatings With Infection-Triggered Bactericidal Activity and Long-Term Antifouling Protection.

The long-term failure of implantable stents originates from static protection that cannot adapt to the temporal shift of primary risks from early-stage infection and late-stage biofilm-mineral occlusion. Inspired by the dynamic metal homeostasis of metallothioneins, we propose a β-hydroxy thioether-based ion-regulatory network that programs competing binding sites with distinct kinetic and thermodynamic preferences, thereby embedding an intrinsic functional clock into an otherwise static material. As a proof of concept, silver is employed as a representative ion to demonstrate how conventional

Focused He⁺ Ion Irradiation for Deterministic Nanoscale Domain Wall Pinning and Domain Nucleation in Current-Driven Magnetization Switching.

Predictive domain wall nucleation, propagation, and pinning is achieved by He⁺ ion irradiation of spin-orbit torque thin film devices. Engineering the magnetic anisotropy landscape with nm precision, we demonstrate that non-irradiated gaps as small as 10 nm can act as reliable pinning sites, highlighting the potential of this method for device miniaturization. We also create artificial nucleation centers, enabling deterministic control of the switching process and subsequent reversal propagation. This study presents a simple and effective strategy for advancing nanoscale design of energy-effic

Investigations of the Molecular Nature of Low-Molecular-Mass Copper(II) Ion Complexes in Human Saliva: Physiological and Toxicological Significance.

Copper is an essential trace element that plays critical roles in enzymatic processes and cellular metabolism. However, excessive exposure to its ions can lead to toxicity through oxidative stress mechanisms. Therefore, the chemical 'speciation' of copper(II) ions (Cu(II)) in biological fluids such as saliva is of critical importance. However, currently this phenomenon remains poorly understood, despite its importance for our understanding of bioavailability, toxicity, and sensory perception. Therefore, this study employed 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform inf…

Biologically optimized 3D range modulators for fast conformal carbon ion therapy:in vitrovalidation, treatment planning, and robustness analysis.

Objective.Patient-specific 3D range modulators (RMs) allow rapid and conformal particle therapy with monoenergetic beams and may support motion management and ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) studies. For carbon ions, however, relative biological effectiveness (RBE) varies strongly with depth, so RM geometry should be optimized for biological effect rather than physical dose alone. This work presents a translational pathway for biologically optimized 3D RMs (bio-RMs) for carbon ion therapy, evaluated through dosimetric verification, radiobiological validation, and patient-specific planning.Approach…
