Associations Between Patient Language Preference and Hepatitis C Screening: Results From the DETECT Hep C Emergency Department Screening Trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most common blood-borne infection in the United States, hence, emergency department (ED)-based HCV screening is effective for diagnosing HCV as an important step leading to referral for treatment. A patient's preferred language other than English (PLOE) may negatively affect overall care, although no prior research has evaluated the effect of language preference on HCV screening in EDs. Thus, the goal of this study was to estimate associations between language preference and HCV testing offer and acceptance as part of routine HCV screening in the…

Language exposure, input diversity and receptive vocabulary affect stop and vowel perception in Spanish-dominant Spanish-English bilingual children.

Language-specific speech perception intensifies at preschool age; yet no study has examined this phenomenon in bilinguals. This study explores stop and vowel perception in English and Spanish in 74 Mexican-origin children (mean age: 50 months; 37 Spanish-English bilinguals, 24 females; 37 English monolinguals, 23 females) and examines whether language exposure, input diversity, and receptive vocabulary moderate bilinguals' perception in each language. Bilinguals' English stop-but not vowel-perception, as assessed through a forced-choice minimal-pair identification task in 2022 and 2023, was pa…

Exploring domestic violence against deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals: a quantitative survey using a sign language video questionnaire.

This study explores domestic violence against deaf and hard-of-hearing adults in Iran-an issue that has received little attention. Using a bilingual questionnaire available in both written Persian and Iranian Sign Language video, we surveyed 384 married or cohabiting deaf adults recruited through social media and deaf associations. Participants reported experiences of physical, psychological, sexual, and economic abuse. Psychological and sexual violence were the most common, especially among women and those in unstable or ended relationships. People who were only partly fluent in sign language…

Publicly available multimodal large language models for ocular surface infections: benchmarking against corneal specialists in triage, diagnosis and treatment.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ocular surface infections remain a major cause of visual loss worldwide, yet diagnosis often relies on slow or insensitive microbiological techniques. Artificial intelligence may complement emerging molecular tools by supporting rapid triage and diagnostic reasoning. This study benchmarked publicly available multimodal large language models (LLMs) against corneal specialists for the diagnosis, treatment and urgency triage of infectious keratitis and conjunctivitis. METHODS: A single-centre diagnostic-accuracy study included 60 microbiologically confirmed infectious keratitis …

Production and Perception Errors From Speech Error Corpora Reflect Macro- and Meso-Level Structure of the Phonological Language Network.

The goal of the present study was to investigate if cognitive traces of the network structure of the phonological language network, where phonological word-form neighbors are connected to each other, could be uncovered in word substitution errors. The phonological network has a set of macro-level (i.e., features characterizing global structure of the lexicon) and meso-level (i.e., features characterizing intermediate structure or subgroups within the lexicon) structural features that should be observable in speech error data if such features play a role in production and retrieval processes. A…

Learning Chinese induces altered resting-state functional connectivity relating to orthographic and phonological processing in adult alphabetic language speakers.

The complex relationship between Chinese characters and their pronunciations presents challenges for alphabetic language speakers learning Chinese. While previous studies have demonstrated brain structural alterations, little is known about functional neuroplasticity after prolonged Chinese learning. Here, we examined its impact on the resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) associated with orthographic and phonological processing. We acquired RS-fMRI data from 17 Indian students who had learned Chinese for 3.24 years (learned group, LG) and 21 university students (control group, CG). We …

Combined evidence from artificial neural networks and human brain-lesion models reveals that language modulates vision in human perception.

Comparing information structures in between deep neural networks (DNNs) and the human brain has become a key method for exploring their similarities and differences. Recent research has shown better alignment of vision-language DNN models, such as contrastive language-image pretraining (CLIP), with the activity of the human ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) than earlier vision models, supporting the idea that language modulates human visual perception. However, interpreting the results from such comparisons is inherently limited owing to the 'black box' nature of DNNs. Here we combine mod…

Non-clinical Psychosocial Mental Health Support Programmes for People with Diverse Language and Cultural Backgrounds: A Critical Rapid Review.

Low accessibility to mainstream psychosocial services disadvantages culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations, resulting in delayed care and high rates of unsupported psychological distress. Non-clinical interventions may play an important role in improving accessibility to psychosocial support, but what characterises best practice in this space remains unclear. This critical rapid review addressed this gap by searching for, and critically analysing, existing research on non-clinical psychosocial support services, drawing from a critical realist framework and Brossard and Chandl

Detecting Sociodemographic Biases in the Content and Quality of Large Language Model-Generated Nursing Care: Cross-Sectional Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly applied in health care. However, concerns remain that their nursing care recommendations may reflect patients' sociodemographic attributes rather than clinical needs. While this risk is acknowledged, there is a lack of empirical evidence evaluating sociodemographic bias in LLM-generated nursing care plans. OBJECTIVE: To investigate potential biases in nursing care plans generated by LLMs, we focused on whether outputs differ systematically based on patients' sociodemographic characteristics and assessed the implications for equitable n…

Effectiveness of Transformer-Based Large Language Models in Identifying Adverse Drug Reaction Relations from Unstructured Discharge Summaries in Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: Transformer-based large language models (LLMs) have transformed the field of natural language processing and led to significant advancements in various text processing tasks. However, the applicability of these LLMs in identifying related drug-adverse event (AE) pairs within clinical context may be limited by the prevalent use of non-standard sentence structures and grammar. METHOD: Nine transformer-based LLMs pre-trained on biomedical domain corpora are fine-tuned on annotated data (n = 5088) to classify drug-AE pairs in unstructured discharge summaries as causally related or u…
