Coordinate regulation of feeding, metabolism, and growth: Perspectives from studies in fish.

This paper develops a model for coordinate regulation of feeding, metabolism, and growth based on studies in fish. Many factors involved with the control of feeding [e.g., cholecystokinin (CCK) and ghrelin (GRLN)], energy metabolism [e.g., insulin (INS), glucagon (GLU), glucagon-like peptide (GLP), and somatostatins (SS), produced in the endocrine pancreas; and leptin (LEP) produced broadly], and growth [e.g., GRLN, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), GH receptors (GHR), IGF receptors (IGFR)] interact at various levels. Many such interactions serve to coordinate these syst

The efficacy and safety of acupuncture for patients with post-percutaneous coronary intervention depression: A protocol for systematic review and meta analysis.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been increasingly applied as an effective revascularization strategy in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, recent studies had indicated a higher incidence of depression on post-PCI patients. Acupuncture therapy is effective for depression. However, the treatment effect of depression on post-PCI patients is still not clear. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis protocol is planned to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for depression in post-PCI patients. METHODS: Six English databases (PubMed

The efficacy of Bifidobacterium quadruple viable tablet in the treatment of diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome: protocol for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders characterized by recurrent abdominal pain associated with defecation or a change in bowel habits. Leading to significant negative effect on patients' quality of life and huge financial burden to health system, the management of IBS is a great challenge. Probiotics are considered as an effective therapy; however, in a lack of high-quality evidence of efficacy, no strain- and dose-specific probiotics were recommended in clinical guidelines. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the Bi

Relationship between maternal adverse childhood experiences and infant development: A systematic review (protocol).

INTRODUCTION: Twenty years ago, the first study was conducted to access adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their relation to outcomes in adulthood. The effects of exposure to childhood trauma can also be transmitted to other generations. There are some studies that suggest the hypothesis that intergenerational transmission may begin during intrauterine life through the change in placental-fetal physiology due to maternal exposure to adverse events in childhood. Those exposures can lead to a variety of conditions such as altered brain architecture, increase in placental corticotrophin hor

Implementation of the HiBalance training program for Parkinson's disease in clinical settings: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Translating evidence into practice requires adaptation to facilitate the implementation of efficacious interventions. A novel highly challenging balance training program (HiBalance) was found to improve gait, balance, and physical activity in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) in an earlier randomized controlled trial. This study aimed to describe the adaptation process and feasibility of implementing the HiBalance program for PD within primary healthcare settings. METHOD: Feasibility was assessed in terms of study processes and scientific evaluation. Nine persons with mild-mod

Multicentre, open-label, randomised, parallel-group, superiority study to compare the efficacy of octreotide therapy 40 mg monthly versus standard of care in patients with refractory anaemia due to gastrointestinal bleeding from small bowel angiodysplasias: a protocol of the OCEAN trial.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal angiodysplasias are an important cause of difficult-to-manage bleeding, especially in older patients. Endoscopic coagulation of angiodysplasias is the mainstay of treatment, but may be difficult for small bowel angiodysplasias because of the inability to reach them for endoscopic intervention. Some patients are red blood cell (RBC) transfusion dependent due to frequent rebleeding despite endoscopic treatment. In small cohort studies, octreotide appears to decrease the number of bleeding episodes in patients with RBC transfusion dependency due to gastrointestinal

The chronic kidney disease model: a general purpose model of disease progression and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the focus of recent national policy efforts; however, decision makers must account for multiple therapeutic options, comorbidities and complications. The objective of the Chronic Kidney Disease model is to provide guidance to decision makers. We describe this model and give an example of how it can inform clinical and policy decisions. METHODS: Monte Carlo simulation of CKD natural history and treatment. Health states include myocardial infarction, stroke with and without disability, congestive heart failure, CKD stages 1-5, bone disease, dialysis,

Heart rate variability in depressed elderly.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examines a measure of cardiac autonomic function, the heart rate variability (HRV), in a group of depressed elderly. Cardiac autonomic abnormalities have been implicated as a potential mediator of cardiovascular events and sudden death in depression. Because aging is associated with decreased cardiac vagal activity, it is possible that autonomic abnormalities are even more pronounced in the older depressed patients. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison between those with or without depression. The groups were compared using the Wilcoxon matched-pair sign-rank test.
