Absence of harmful effects of magnetic resonance exposure at 1.5 T in utero during the third trimester of pregnancy: a follow-up study.

In this study the possible adverse effects of in utero exposure to magnetic resonance (MR) conditions at 1.5 Tesla were examined. Thirty-five children between 1 and 3 years of age, and nine children between 8 and 9 years of age, that were exposed to MR during the third trimester of pregnancy, were checked for possible adverse effects in a follow-up study. Data on pregnancy and birth, the results of a neurological examination at 3 months, their medical documentary with emphasis on eye and ear functioning, and a questionnaire answered by their mothers were collected and evaluated. In five childr

Inhalation teratology and reproduction studies with 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123).

HCFC 123 is one of the chemicals being developed as a replacement for CFC 11 in refrigerant and solvent applications. Supplementing earlier rat teratology studies, a rabbit inhalation teratology study was conducted. In addition, one-generation and two-generation inhalation reproduction studies were conducted. In the teratology study, the pregnant rabbits were exposed to levels of 0 (control), 500, 1500, and 5000 ppm, 6 hr per day from Days 6 through 18 of gestation. Slight body weight losses and reduced food consumption were seen in does in all three exposure level groups. This response follow

3,3'-Dichlorobiphenyl (PCB 11) alters the hepatic expression of cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver of mouse dams exposed orally during pregnancy and lactation.

Healthy maternal metabolism is critical during pregnancy and lactation to support fetal development and protect against environmental toxins. Polychlorinated biphenyl 11 (PCB 11), a lower-chlorinated, non-legacy congener, is detected in human serum, including pregnant women and children; however, its impact during these sensitive life stages remains poorly understood. This study presents the first comprehensive hepatic proteome analysis of mouse dams exposed to PCB 11 during pregnancy and lactation. Female C57BL/6 J mice received daily oral doses of PCB 11 (0, 1.0 or 6.0 mg/kg) prior to concep

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and childbearing and perinatal mental health outcomes in a clinical sample of women.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) are associated with later life complications, including childbearing outcomes and episodes of mental ill-health. The perinatal period is a timepoint of vulnerability to the impacts of early life adversity, such as ACEs. We explored the association between maternal exposure to ACEs, entering parenthood, and episodes of mental ill-health during the perinatal period in a clinical sample with a mental health diagnosis to determine the increased vulnerability the perinatal period brings. Participants (N = 1494) were recruited across the UK, were aged 18 years or …

Echoes of conflict and displacement in maternal health: Life-course violence, timing, and maternal stress after childbirth at the northern Thailand-Myanmar border.

Armed conflict, displacement, and related violence is escalating globally, concentrated among civilians and migrants in border areas, and poses grave harms to women and children. The current study investigates how women's life-course experiences of conflict and displacement are linked to maternal stress and health outcomes after childbirth at the Thailand-Myanmar border, specifically stress, mental health, and cardiometabolic outcomes. Analyses are based on a cross-sectional population-based maternal and child health survey of 701 mothers, collected in 2017-18 in northern Thailand along the My

Maternal Minocycline as Fetal Therapy in a Rat Model of Myelomeningocele.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate whether the maternal administration of minocycline, a tetracycline antibiotic known to have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties in models of neural injury, reduces inflammation and neural cell death in a fetal rat model of myelomeningocele (MMC). METHODS: E10 pregnant rats were gavaged with olive oil or olive oil + retinoic acid to induce fetal MMC. At E12, the dams were exposed to regular drinking water or water containing minocycline (range, 40-140 mg/kg/day). At E21, fetal lumbosacral spinal cords were isolated for immunohistochemi

Nutritional Status Differs by Prescription Opioid Use among Women of Reproductive Age: NHANES 1999-2018.

Prescription opioid use among pregnant women has increased in recent years. Prenatal exposure to opioids and poor nutrition can both negatively impact maternal-fetal outcomes. The objective of this study was to characterize the nutrition and health status of reproductive-age women taking prescription opioids, compared to women not taking opioids. Using NHANES 1999-2018 data, non-pregnant women aged 20-44 years were classified as taking a prescription opioid in the last 30 days (n = 404) or unexposed controls (n = 7234). Differences in anthropometric, cardiovascular, hematologic, and micronutri

Defective Uterine Spiral Artery Remodeling and Placental Senescence in a Pregnant Rat Model of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Pregnancy-related problems have been linked to impairments in maternal uterine spiral artery (SpA) remodeling. The mechanisms underlying this association are still unclear. It is also unclear whether hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance, the two common manifestations of polycystic ovary syndrome, affect uterine SpA remodeling. We verified previous work in which exposure to 5-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and insulin (INS) in rats during pregnancy resulted in hyperandrogenism, insulin intolerance, and higher fetal mortality. Exposure to DHT and INS dysregulated the expression of angiogenesis-rel

Maternal smoking during pregnancy aggravated muscle phenotype in FHL1-/y offspring mice similar to congenital clubfoot through P2RX7-mediated pyroptosis.

Congenital clubfoot (CCF) is a common birth defect. Maternal smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of CCF. In previous research, we found muscle phenotypes similar to CCF in four and a half LIM domain protein 1 (FHLI) offspring mice (FHL1-/y). However, the role of P2RX7-mediated pyroptosis in the effect of cigarette smoke (CS) on the skeletal muscle of FHL1-/y mice during pregnancy is unclear. In the present study, pregnant mice at 11 days of gestation were exposed to CS and male offspring of wild-type (WT) and FHL1-/y mice were divided into four groups (Control-WT, Control-KO, CS-WT, CS

Maternal Prenatal Cortisol and Breastfeeding Predict Infant Growth.

Fetal/infant growth affects adult obesity and morbidities/mortality and has been associated with prenatal exposure to cortisol. Bidirectional relations between maternal stress and breastfeeding suggest that they interact to influence offspring growth. No models have tested this hypothesis, particularly regarding longer-term offspring outcomes. We used a subset of the IDAHO Mom Study (n = 19-95) to examine associations among maternal prenatal cortisol (cortisol awakening response (CAR) and area under the curve), and standardized weight-for-length (WLZ) and length-for-age (LAZ) z-scores from bir

Diabetic Pregnancy and Maternal High-Fat Diet Impair Mitochondrial Dynamism in the Developing Fetal Rat Heart by Sex-Specific Mechanisms.

Infants born to diabetic or obese mothers are at greater risk of heart disease at birth and throughout life, but prevention is hindered because underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using a rat model, we showed that prenatal exposure to maternal diabetes and a high-fat diet caused diastolic and systolic dysfunction, myocardial lipid accumulation, decreased respiratory capacity, and oxidative stress in newborn offspring hearts. This study aimed to determine whether mitochondrial dynamism played a role. Using confocal live-cell imaging, we examined mitochondrial dynamics in neonatal ra

Polymorphism in CYP1A1, GSTMI, GSTT1 genes and organochlorine pesticides in the etiology of hypospadias.

Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and maternal endogenous estrogen may cause hypospadias, common congenital anomaly. Several organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been reported to possess an endocrine-disrupting potential. Cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) and glutathione S-transferases (GSTM1 and GSTT1) of xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme family are involved in the metabolism of various environmental toxicants and steroidal hormones. Hence, the present study was designed to evaluate the role of CYP1A1, GSTM1, GSTT1 genes polymorphism, OCPs levels and risk of hypospadias. A total of 80

Testosterone enhancement during pregnancy influences the 2D:4D ratio and open field motor activity of rat siblings in adulthood.

In humans, the relationship between the prenatal testosterone exposure and the ratio of the second and the fourth digits (2D:4D) has been extensively studied. Surprisingly, data on this relationship have thus far been lacking in experimental animals such as rats. We studied the effect of maternal testosterone enhancement during pregnancy on the digit ratio and open field activity of adult progeny in Wistar rats. Elevated levels of maternal testosterone resulted in lower 2D:4D ratios and an elongated 4D on the left and right forepaws in both males and females. We found no sex difference in 2D:4

Effects of preterm birth and gestational diabetes on innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in human breast milk.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding provides key immunological and metabolic benefits for newborns, reducing complications of preterm birth and long-term risks associated with maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, the mechanisms underlying these protective effects, particularly the role of maternal immune cells in breast milk, remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate how preterm birth and GDM influence the composition of breast milk-derived innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) during early lactation and to explore whether these maternal cells affect neonatal immune charac

Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences and Delayed Initiation of Complementary Foods: A Nationwide Online Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Infant feeding is critical for health and development, yet the influence of maternal psychosocial factors on its timing is not fully understood. While maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to affect perinatal outcomes, their impact on the specific timing of initiating formula and complementary foods remains under-investigated. We hypothesized that maternal ACEs are associated with delayed initiation of infant formula and complementary foods and that this association is mediated by postpartum depression (PPD). This study aimed to examine the link between
