Electron microscopy of renal biopsy material from 50 patients with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis treated in a southern Indian hospital, showed a low prevalence of type 2 (dense deposit) disease. Eosinophilia was seen in more than one-third of the 41 patients with type 1 disease. Associated diseases and possible sources of chronic antigenaemia found in some patients included: streptococcal infection, Bancroftian filariasis, tropical pulmonary eosinophilia, hepatitis B surface antigenaemia and lepromatous leprosy.

The retrocorneal linear ridges in corneas from one case of syphilitic and two cases of herpetic interstitial keratitis were examined by electron microscopy. The hyaline ridge in syphilitic keratitis showed duplicated Descemet's membrane with focal excrescences of basement membrane-like substances. The hyaline ridge in herpetic keratitis showed a triangular area of increased fibrous tissues in the deeper stroma adjacent to Descemet's membrane with no focal excrescences of Descemet's membrane.

A patient with rheumatoid arthritis who developed multiple mononeuropathies multiplex was shown to have vasculitis in nerve biopsy, but no evidence of inflammatory muscle disease in muscle biopsy. Treatment with penicillamine caused the rare complication of polymyositis, documented clinically, electrophysiologically, and by light and electron microscopy in a second muscle biopsy. The evidence presented supports the concept that penicillamine may induce polymyositis or aggravate a pre-existing low-grade myositis.

Cysticercus cellulosae, the larval stage of Taenia solium, was studied by light and electron microscopy after its removal from the vitreous. The ultrastructure of the larva is highly organized and displays a superficial tegument and deeper parenchyma. The tegument contains a microvillous surface overlying a syncytial cytoplasm. A deeper muscular layer overlies the parenchyma, within which are highly specialized structures important in water balance, flame cells, and acid-neutralizing calcareous corpuscles.

Necrotizing lymphadenitis with Warthin-Finkeldey type giant cells was found in the inguinal lymph nodes of a 14-month-old boy following measles vaccination. Electron microscopy displayed (mostly in the endothelial cells) numerous intracytoplasmic inclusions composed of fine, dense granular and fibrillar material, which (among other structures) are known to occur within various cells in connection with measles paramyxovirus infection. Subsequent investigation disclosed familial immunodeficiency of a predominantly cellular type.

Electron microscopy of hepatitis B antigen has revealed Dane particles with abnormal morphology. These aberrant Dane particles contain incomplete cores. They were seen in large numbers in the serum of an HBsAg-carrying renal dialysis patient and were less numerous but invariably present in other Dane particle-containing sera --12 from asymptomatic carriers, 2 chronic hepatitis patients and 1 patient with acute hepatitis. All 16 sera were shown to contain HBeAg.

Cryptosporidium is a potentially pathogenic coccidial protoxoan known to inhabit the striated border of interestinal epithelium in several animal species. Recently two cases of human intestinal cryptosporidiosis have been described. The purpose of this report is to document a third case of chronic debilitating cryptosporidial enteritis in a young boy with congenital hypogammaglobulinemia. The endogenous protozoan life cycle and morphologic features are examined as studied by light and electron microscopy.

A case associating a systemic mastocytosis and an acquired myeloperoxidase deficiency is reported. The myeloperoxydase deficiency is studied by cytochemical techniques in optical and electron microscopy and confirmed by biochemical measures. An important defect in bactericidal and candidacidal activity is demonstrated in vitro in P.N.M. The authors discuss the links between the two anomalies which might bring one more argument for the common origin of both granulocytes and mastocytes.

Twelve healthy relatives of two children who died of malignant hyperthermia--volunteered to give biopsies of striated muscle. Electron microscopy of their muscles revealed nonspecific myofibrillary degeneration and profound alterations of parts of muscle fibres. Furthermore, constructional faults were found in the architecture of the muscle. Previous investigations correlated with these abnormalities support the assumption, that inborn errors of metabolism may involve membranes of other tissues as well as striated muscle.

The initial mobilization of the protective power of amniotic cells under the influence of the intracellular parasite Shigellae Flexner was shown using qualitative and quantitative methods of electron microscopy. This mobilization is seen in the appearance and then concentration of membrane elements of the endoplasmic reticulum around the bacteria. The character of some degenerating changes confirms the opinion about the presence of an excreting endotoxin fraction in Shigellae Flexner.

Hyphal invasion of blood vessels is a prominent feature of invasive aspergillosis. During invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, Aspergillus fumigatus hyphae invade the abluminal endothelial cell surface, whereas they invade the luminal endothelial cell surface during haematogenous dissemination.
