Psychosocial and behavioral correlates of STI-related sexual risk among college students: A multivariable analysis across racial and ethnic groups.

Objective: To examine psychological, behavioral, and knowledge-based predictors of STI-related sexual risk among college students, with attention to racial and ethnic differences. Participants: A total of 1,826 undergraduate students from three U.S. universities. Methods: Students completed validated measures of STI-related sexual behavior, HIV knowledge, substance use, depressive symptoms, and sexual regulation. Analyses included ANOVAs, t tests, and race- and ethnicity-stratified logistic regression models. Results: Overall, 15.6% of sexually active students demonstrated elevated STI-related

Uncovering the Use of Family-Centered Care Interventions Among Children With Cancer and Their Families: A Scoping Review of the Characteristics of Interventions and Effectiveness.

Family-centered care (FCC) interventions have gained increasing attention in pediatric oncology, yet their characteristics, effectiveness, and implementation challenges remain insufficiently synthesized. This scoping review systematically mapped existing FCC interventions for children with cancer and their families following JBI methodological guidance and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) reporting standards. Twenty-two studies involving 1,049 pediatric patients and 1,504 family members were included. Intervention

A prolonged stress rat model recapitulates some PTSD-like changes in sleep and neuronal connectivity.

Chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exhibits psychological abnormalities during fear memory processing in rodent models. To simulate long-term impaired fear extinction in PTSD patients, we constructed a seven-day model with multiple prolonged stress (MPS) by modifying manipulation repetitions, intensity, and unpredictability of stressors. Behavioral and neural changes following MPS conveyed longitudinal PTSD-like effects in rats for 6 weeks. Extended fear memory was estimated through fear retrieval induced-freezing behavior and increased long-term serum corticosterone concentrations

Preventing Osteoarthritis After an Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: An Osteoarthritis Action Alliance Consensus Statement.

After an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, people need secondary prevention strategies to identify osteoarthritis at its earliest stages so that interventions can be implemented to halt or slow the progression toward its long-term burden. The Osteoarthritis Action Alliance formed an interdisciplinary Secondary Prevention Task Group to develop a consensus on recommendations to provide clinicians with secondary prevention strategies that are intended to reduce the risk of osteoarthritis after a person has an ACL injury. The group achieved consensus on 15 out of 16 recommendations that add

Heritability of overlapping impulsivity and compulsivity dimensional phenotypes.

Impulsivity and compulsivity are traits relevant to a range of mental health problems and have traditionally been conceptualised as distinct constructs. Here, we reconceptualised impulsivity and compulsivity as partially overlapping phenotypes using a bifactor modelling approach and estimated heritability for their shared and unique phenotypic variance within a classical twin design. Adult twin pairs (N = 173) completed self-report questionnaires measuring psychological processes related to impulsivity and compulsivity. We fitted variance components models to three uncorrelated phenotypic dime

Emotional Processing and Personality as Predictors of Obsessive-compulsive Symptoms in College Students.

The categorical definition of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and exclusive focus on thoughts and behaviors, have constrained the study and treatment of its symptoms. The present study's aim was to search for relationships among emotional processing dimensions, five major personality dimensions, and self-perceived obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The participants were 100 college students, and the questionnaires used were a selection of images from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS), the Self-assessment Manikin (SAM), the Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (DOCS), and the NEO-F

Non-pharmacological pain management in the neonatal intensive care unit: Managing neonatal pain without drugs.

Premature infants hospitalized after birth are exposed to repeated painful procedures as part of their routine medical care. Early neonatal exposure to unmanaged pain has been linked to numerous negative long-term outcomes, such as the development of pain hypersensitivity, detrimental psychological symptomology, and altered neurodevelopment. These findings emphasize the crucial role of pain management in neonatal care. The aim of this article is to give an overview of evidence-based non-pharmacological pain management techniques for hospitalized neonates. Research supporting the effectiveness

Anorexia Nervosa, Anxiety, and the Clinical Implications of Rapid Refeeding.

The current study aimed to examine the temporal relationship between anxiety symptoms and weight gain for adolescents with anorexia nervosa over the course of an inpatient admission targeting weight restoration through rapid refeeding. Participants were 31 females presenting to a specialist inpatient unit. Psychometric assessments using standardized procedures were conducted to assess co-morbid anxiety diagnoses, and eating disorder symptom severity at admission and discharge. Study protocols were completed on a weekly basis over the course of their admission and were compared with weekly BMI

Prescription of Antidementia Drugs and Antipsychotics for Elderly Patients in Japan: A Descriptive Study Using Pharmacy Prescription Data.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotics are commonly used for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia among elderly patients with dementia receiving antidementia drugs (ADDs). However, the use of antipsychotics among these patients has not been investigated since 3 ADDs were approved in 2011 in Japan. METHOD: We conducted a descriptive study using pharmacy prescription data and identified patients aged ≥65 years who were newly prescribed donepezil, memantine, rivastigmine, and galantamine between January 1, 2012, and September 30, 2014. We determined the proportion of antipsychotic pres

Work-related injury factors and safety climate perception in truck drivers.

INTRODUCTION: The trucking industry has a high burden of work-related injuries. This study examined factors, such as safety climate perceptions, that may impact injury risk. METHOD: A random sample of 9800 commercial driver's license holders (CDL) were sent surveys, only 4360 were eligible truck drivers. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were developed to describe the population and identify variables associated with work-related injury. RESULTS: 2189 drivers completed the pertinent interview questions. Driving less-than-truckload, daytime sleepiness, pressure to work fas

Structural Equation Modeling Test of an Integrated Model of Spanish Youth's Condom Use.

Heterosexual transmission represents 26 % of newly diagnosed infection in Spanish youth. Behavioral change models have emphasized the influence of multiple variables to predict condom use behavior. The aim of this study is to examine how those variables are organized and which theory explains the condom use behavior better. A sample of 424 young heterosexuals (M age  = 20.62; SD = 2.16) filled out a battery of self-report questionnaires for assessing AIDS-related variables, personality traits and clinical variables (general, sexuality-related and health-related). Neuropsychiatric presentations of antiphospholipid antibodies.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a systemic disease which can affect the central nervous system (CNS) through thrombotic mechanisms prone to induce vascular damage: stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) on the arterial side, cerebral venous thrombosis on the venous side. Beside these academic syndromic manifestations, some nonvascular neurological manifestations of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLAbs) are progressively emerging, being associated with a wide range of polymorphic neurological, psychological and psychiatric manifestations. Animal models and in vitro experimental data suppor

A historical review of trauma-related diagnoses to reconsider the heterogeneity of PTSD.

Based on the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, there are 636,120 ways for an individual to qualify for a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Galatzer-Levy & Bryant, 2013). To unravel this heterogeneity, we examine the historical trajectory of trauma-related diagnoses. Our review addresses four traumas (i.e., combat, natural disaster, life-threatening accident and sexual assault) that have contributed the most to conceptual models of PTSD. Although these trauma types are all subsumed under the same diagnostic label, our literature review in

Using the Neuroscience of Obesity, Eating Behavior, and Sleep to Inform the Neural Mechanisms of Night Eating Syndrome.

The development and maintenance of night eating syndrome (NES) is likely influenced by physiological, psychological, and social factors. Within the physiological domain, neural mechanisms (e.g., neurotransmitters and specific brain region functioning) remain understudied in contrast to other eating disorders and obesity. The serotonin system has been hypothesized to contribute to NES based on one single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) study and supportive pharmacologic treatment outcome findings, but additional neural models are plausible. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMR

A systematic review of predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for adult road traffic crash survivors.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common psychological consequences for adult road traffic crash (RTC) survivors and can have serious and long-lasting consequences for recovery if left untreated. Prevalence rates of PTSD following a RTC vary from 6% to 45% (based on 51 prevalence estimates across 35 studies). Explanations for this wide variance are explored. A systematic review of published studies found 49 papers (44 unique studies) investigating predictors of later PTSD in RTC survivors. Consistent predictors of PTSD include rumination about the trauma, perceived threat

Clinical applications of mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of fracture non-union and bone defects.

Bone defects resulting from trauma or resorption, whether physiological or pathological, remain a major challenge in the management of patients. The limits of bone regeneration still result in many people never recovering fully their function and quality of life; with all the social, financial and psychological implications. The aim of this review is to present the current level of possible applications of stem cells and tissue engineering in bone repair. From animal models to human trials, the knowledge surrounding the use of mesenchymal stem cells in manipulating bone healing, where normal p

The Moderating Effects of Mother-Adolescent Relations on the Longitudinal Association between Father and Offspring Depressive Symptoms.

Little theoretical or empirical attention has been given to factors associated with better or worse outcomes in offspring of depressed fathers. Drawing from interpersonal models of intergenerational depression transmission in children of depressed mothers, the present investigation of adolescents and their families (N = 424) examined maternal warmth and hostility as moderators of the longitudinal association between paternal and adolescent depressive symptoms. Controlling for family demographic variables, previous adolescent depressive symptoms, and maternal depressive symptoms, fathers' depre

Trichotillomania: neurobiology and treatment.

Trichotillomania is a disorder characterized by repetitive hair pulling, leading to noticeable hair loss and functional impairment. This paper provides an overview of what is known of trichotillomania from several perspectives. We begin by considering historical descriptions of hair pulling that ultimately contributed to the inclusion of trichotillomania as a formal diagnostic entity in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Psychological factors involved in the mediation of symptoms are examined, including positive and negative reinforcement. The relationships between trichotillomania, other

The fragile-X syndrome.

The variability in behavioral manifestations of the fragile-X syndrome and the lack of a well-defined psychological profile require the attention of behavioral geneticists and other behavioral scientists. The association with autism suggests that the fra(X) may be responsible for a genetic subtype of autism. While the fragile-X syndrome is considered an X-linked disorder, several aspects of observed transmission patterns do not follow those of classical X-linked inheritance. In particular, the finding of genetic transmission via intellectually normal males is surprising and has important impli

Prediction of clinical outcomes in individuals with chronic low back pain: a protocol for a systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most prevalent and recurrent conditions in the general population, with personal, professional, social and economic impact. However, there is a lack of consistent evidence about chronic low back pain (CLBP) prognosis, especially highlighting predictors that influence CLBP outcome. Existing systematic reviews are scarce, outdated and incomplete. The primary aim of this systematic review is to identify multivariable models and/or predictors associated with clinical outcomes in subjects with CLBP (namely pain intensity, disability, return to work, psy
