Automated cervix biometry, volumetry and normative models for 3D motion-corrected T2-weighted 0.55-3T fetal MRI during 2nd and 3rd trimesters.

Fetal MRI provides superior tissue contrast and true 3D spatial information however there is only a limited number of MRI studies investigating cervix during pregnancy1-3. Furthermore, there are no clearly formalised protocols or automated methods for MRI cervical measurements. This work introduces the first deep learning pipeline for automated multi-layer segmentation and biometry for 3D T2w reconstructed images of the pregnant cervix. Evaluation on 20 datasets from 0.55T and 3T acquisitions showed good performance in comparison to manual measurements. This solution could potentially minimise

Margin for compensating displacement of adrenal gland metastasis and fiducial marker along with respiratory phase in real-time motion-tracking radiation therapy.

In therapy with Synchrony® mounted on Radixact®, the fiducial marker (FM) and adrenal gland metastasis, which shift with respiratory phase, require margin compensation for high-dose prescriptions. Although compensation is critical, no studies have examined the margin to compensate for the respiratory phase shift. Therefore, we aimed to suggest the compensating margin for the FM and adrenal metastasis shift along with respiratory phase. We used images from four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) taken twice and gated CT taken once before therapy initiation with available contour data for FM

Quantitative analysis of patient motion in walk-through PET scanner and standard axial field of view pet scanner using infrared-based tracking.

BACKGROUND: Long-axial field-of-view (LAFOV) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanners provide high sensitivity, but throughput is limited because of time-consuming patient positioning. To enhance throughput, a novel Walk-Through PET (WT-PET) scanner has been developed, allowing patients to stand upright, supported by an adjustable headrest and hand supports. This study evaluates the degree of motion in the WT-PET system and compares it with the standard PET-CT. METHODS: Three studies were conducted with healthy volunteers to estimate motion. The first two studies assessed motion in the WT-…

Modeling cerebrospinal fluid dynamics across the entire intracranial space through integration of four-dimensional flow and intravoxel incoherent motion magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Bidirectional reciprocal motion of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was quantified using four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MRI. To estimate various CSF motions in the entire intracranial region, we attempted to integrate the flow parameters calculated using the two MRI sequences. To elucidate how CSF dynamics deteriorate in Hakim's disease, an age-dependent chronic hydrocephalus, flow parameters were estimated from the two MRI sequences to assess CSF motion in the entire intracranial region. METHODS: This study included 12…

The New Double-row Bankart Repair Recovered Shoulder Stability without Excessive Motion Limitation: A Case-Control Study with Single-row Bankart Repair.

OBJECTIVES: Bankart lesion is one of the most common lesions of the glenohumeral joint. Several double-row suture methods were reported for Bankart repair, which could provide more stability, yet more motion limitation and complications. Therefore, we introduced a new double-row Bankart repair technique, key point double-row suture which used one anchor in the medial line. The purpose of this article is to investigate the clinical outcomes of this new method and to compare it with single-row suture. METHODS: Seventy-eight patients receiving key point double-row suture or single-row suture fro…

Number of intra-operative cyclic knee motion required to achieve stable graft tension in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction; a prospective clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Applying pretension by cyclic knee motion immediately before graft fixation in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery decreases graft elongation during the postoperative course. However, the expected change in graft tension caused by cyclic knee motion remains unclear. We measured graft tension changes caused by cyclic knee motion during double-bundle ACL reconstruction. METHODS: We included 39 patients undergoing primary anatomical double-bundle ACL reconstruction with autologous hamstrings as graft sources, at multiple centers between February 2021 and August 20…

Reduced suprasellar cistern cerebrospinal fluid motion in patients with Parkinson's disease revealed by magnetic resonance imaging with dynamic cycling of diffusion weightings.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is characterized by dopamine-responsive symptoms as well as aggregation and accumulation of a-synuclein protofibrils. New diagnostic methods assess a-synuclein aggregation characteristics from cerebrospinal fluid and recent pathophysiologic mechanisms suggest that cerebrospinal fluid circulation disruptions may precipitate a-synuclein retention. Here, we test the hypothesis that cerebrospinal fluid motion at the level of the suprasellar cistern is reduced in Parkinson's disease relative to healthy participants and this reduction relates to choroid plexus perfusi…

Design, optimization, and characterization of an XY nanopositioning stage with multi-level spatial flexure hinges for high-precision large-stroke motion guidance.

Establishing a novel design and accurate analytical models for XY nanopositioning stages based on voice coil motor (VCM) actuators is critical to achieving an optimal working performance. To overcome the existing design challenges of 2-degree-of-freedom guiding mechanisms, a four-layer structure composed of L-shaped spatial double parallelogram flexure mechanisms was proposed for the magnetic stage, which exhibits light weight and inhibits parasitic and decoupled motions. The guiding mechanisms were modeled by the compliance matrix method. Thereafter, by combining an electromagnetic model for …

Starburst amacrine cells, involved in visual motion perception, loose their synaptic input from dopaminergic amacrine cells and degenerate in Parkinson's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: The main clinical symptoms characteristic of Parkinson's disease (PD) are bradykinesia, tremor, and other motor deficits. However, non-motor symptoms, such as visual disturbances, can be identified at early stages of the disease. One of these symptoms is the impairment of visual motion perception. Hence, we sought to determine if the starburst amacrine cells, which are the main cellular type involved in motion direction selectivity, are degenerated in PD and if the dopaminergic system is related to this degeneration. METHODS: Human eyes from control (n = 10) and PD (n = 9) donors …

Left Atrial Wall Motion Velocity Assessed during Atrial Fibrillation Predicts Sinus Rhythm Maintenance after Electrical Cardioversion in Patients with Persistent Atrial Fibrillation.

Reduced left atrial wall motion velocity measured during AF (LAWMV) indicates left atrial remodeling. The aim of this study was to investigate whether LAWMV assessed with tissue Doppler imaging during atrial fibrillation (AF) predicts sinus rhythm (SR) maintenance after direct current cardioversion (DCCV) for persistent AF. The study included 126 patients who underwent DCCV and were followed for 12 months. At 12 months, maintained SR was reported in 55 patients (43.7%). We noted that LAWMV was higher in patients with maintained SR at 12 months than in those with recurrent AF (3.69 ± 0.84 vs. 2…

Reachable workspace with real-time motion capture feedback to quantify upper extremity function: A study on children with brachial plexus birth injury.

Clinical upper extremity (UE) functional assessments and motion capture measures are limited to a set of postures and/or motions that may provide an incomplete evaluation of UE functionality. Reachable workspace analysis offers a more global assessment of UE function, but is reliant on patient compliance with instructions and may result in underestimates of a patient's true UE function. This study evaluated a clinical tool that incorporates real-time visual feedback with motion capture to provide an innovative means of engaging patients to ensure a 'best effort' quantification of their availab…

Functional Ankle Range of Motion but Not Peak Achilles Tendon Force Diminished With Heel-Rise and Jumping Tasks After Achilles Tendon Repair.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in sporting performance after Achilles tendon repair may be due to changes in musculotendinous unit structure, including tendon elongation and muscle fascicle shortening. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to discern whether Achilles tendon rupture reduces triceps surae muscle force generation, alters functional ankle range of motion, or both during sports-related tasks. We hypothesized that individuals who have undergone Achilles tendon repair lack the functional ankle range of motion needed to complete sports-related tasks. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. …

A Novel Approach to New-Onset Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain With Decreased Range of Motion Using Targeted Diagnostic Nerve Blocks: The ViVe Algorithm.

Introduction: Hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) is the most common pain disorder after stroke with incidence estimates of 30-70% and associated with reductions in function, interference with rehabilitation, and a reduced quality of life. Onset may occur as soon as a week after stroke in 17% of patients. Management of HSP represents a complex treatment pathway with a lack of evidence to support one treatment. The pain has heterogeneous causes. In the acute setting, decreased range of motion in the shoulder can be due to early-onset spasticity, capsular pattern stiffness, glenohumeral pathology, or…
