Differed brain spontaneous neural activity between limb-onset and bulbar-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients.

PURPOSE: To investigate the differences in brain spontaneous neural activity between limb-onset and bulbar-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS-L and ALS-B, respectively) patients using resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) with amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The rs-fMRI data were collected from 41 ALS patients (11 ALS-B and 30 ALS-L) and 25 healthy controls (HC). ALFF and ReHo values were calculated, and group differences were assessed using one-way ANCOVA and two-sample t-tests. Correlation analyses with clinical me

Network dysfunction underlying verbal fluency deficits in newly diagnosed epilepsy: a resting-state fMRI functional connectivity study.

BACKGROUND: Verbal fluency impairment is a common cognitive deficit in epilepsy that further increases the burden of the disease. Current anti-seizure medications mainly target seizure control but rarely improve cognition and may even worsen it in the patients. Neuromodulation has shown potential to control seizures and improve cognition simultaneously by stimulating specific nuclei or neural circuits, but the precise targets for verbal fluency deficits remain unclear, particularly in patients unaffected by anti-seizure medication. Therefore, investigating the neural mechanisms in newly diagno

Neural behavior during cystometry of children with congenital Zika virus: Pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the neural control of bladder function is essential for advancing neuroscience and improving urological outcomes, especially in children with neurological impairments such as Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). Recent evidence of urological dysfunctions in CZS patients highlights the need for integrated neurological and urodynamic investigations. Thus, this exploratory pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and urodynamic studies in children with CZS, and to characterize the patterns of bladder and brain act

Interstellar encounter: Postmortem imaging and virtopsy on a preserved anencephalic Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin specimen after 30 years.

BACKGROUND: Anencephaly is a deadly type of cephalic axial skeletal and neural disorder with a multifactorial aetiology that causes the failure of the rostral neuropore closure, compromising the formation of the neural folds, basicranium, and neurocranium. In cetaceans, there is only one report of this fetal abnormality, dated in late 1991, in a male stillborn Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and diagnosed using transabdominal ultrasonography on its mother that was kept under human care in the Ocean Park Corporation. After birth, physical and general radiographic examination

Breathe better, live better: the science of slow breathing and heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Slow breathing and heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback have gained attention as non-invasive methods for enhancing autonomic regulation and promoting vagal tone. These techniques are associated with improvements in cardiovascular, respiratory, and neural outcomes, offering potential therapeutic applications for stress-related and chronic conditions. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted by analyzing six studies focusing on slow breathing and HRV biofeedback. The included studies involved healthy adults aged between 18 and 60 years, free from major cardiovascular, respirator

Hemispheric divergence of interoceptive processing across psychiatric disorders.

Interactions between top-down attention and bottom-up visceral inputs are assumed to produce conscious perceptions of interoceptive states, and while each process has been independently associated with aberrant interoceptive symptomatology in psychiatric disorders, the neural substrates of this interface are unknown. We conducted a preregistered functional neuroimaging study of 46 individuals with anxiety, depression, and/or eating disorders (ADE) and 46 propensity-matched healthy comparisons (HC), comparing their neural activity across two interoceptive tasks differentially recruiting top-dow

Mapping the neurodevelopmental predictors of psychopathology.

Neuroimaging research has uncovered a multitude of neural abnormalities associated with psychopathology, but few prediction-based studies have been conducted during adolescence, and even fewer used neurobiological features that were extracted across multiple neuroimaging modalities. This gap in the literature is critical, as deriving accurate brain-based models of psychopathology is an essential step towards understanding key neural mechanisms and identifying high-risk individuals. As such, we trained adaptive tree-boosting algorithms on multimodal neuroimaging features from the Lifespan Human

Parcellation-based tractographic modeling of the salience network through meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The salience network (SN) is a transitory mediator between active and passive states of mind. Multiple cortical areas, including the opercular, insular, and cingulate cortices have been linked in this processing, though knowledge of network connectivity has been devoid of structural specificity. OBJECTIVE: The current study sought to create an anatomically specific connectivity model of the neural substrates involved in the salience network. METHODS: A literature search of PubMed and BrainMap Sleuth was conducted for resting-state and task-based fMRI studies relevant to the salie

Toward intraoperative tissue classification: exploiting signal feedback from an ultrasonic aspirator for brain tissue differentiation.

PURPOSE: During brain tumor surgery, care must be taken to accurately differentiate between tumorous and healthy tissue, as inadvertent resection of functional brain areas can cause severe consequences. Since visual assessment can be difficult during tissue resection, neurosurgeons have to rely on the mechanical perception of tissue, which in itself is inherently challenging. A commonly used instrument for tumor resection is the ultrasonic aspirator, whose system behavior is already dependent on tissue properties. Using data recorded during tissue fragmentation, machine learning-based tissue d

Induced Neurodifferentiation of hBM-MSCs through Activation of the ERK/CREB Pathway via Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields and Physical Stimulation Promotes Neurogenesis in Cerebral Ischemic Models.

Stroke is among the leading causes of death worldwide, and stroke patients are more likely to live with permanent disabilities even after treatment. Several treatments are being developed to improve the quality of life of patients; however, these treatments still have important limitations. Our study thus sought to evaluate the neural differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs) at various pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) frequencies. Furthermore, the effects of selected frequencies in vivo were also evaluated using a mouse ischemia stroke model. Cell proliferation

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial examining multilevel prediction of response to behavioral activation and exposure-based therapy for generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Only 40-60% of patients with generalized anxiety disorder experience long-lasting improvement with gold standard psychosocial interventions. Identifying neurobehavioral factors that predict treatment success might provide specific targets for more individualized interventions, fostering more optimal outcomes and bringing us closer to the goal of "personalized medicine." Research suggests that reward and threat processing (approach/avoidance behavior) and cognitive control may be important for understanding anxiety and comorbid depressive disorders and may have relevance to treatmen

Use of fine needle aspirate from peripheral nerves of pure-neural leprosy for cytology and PCR to confirm the diagnosis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of pure neural leprosy (PNL) remained subjective because of over-dependence of clinical expertise and a lack of simple yet reliable diagnostic tool. The criteria for diagnosis, proposed by Jardim et al., are not routinely done by clinicians in developing country as it involves invasive nerve biopsy and sophisticated anti-PGL-1 detection. We conducted a study using fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) coupled with Ziehl Neelsen staining (ZN staining) and Multiplex-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) specific for M. leprae for an objective diagnosis of pure neural leprosy

Paget's disease of the spine and its management.

A review of the literature was conducted to study the pathomechanics by which Paget's Disease of bone (PD) alters the spinal structures that result in distinct spinal pathologic entities such as pagetic spinal arthritis, spinal stenosis, and other pathologies, and to assess the best treatment options and available drugs. The spine is the second most commonly affected site with PD. About one-third of patients with spinal involvement exhibit symptoms of clinical stenosis. In only 12-24% of patients with PD of the spine is back pain attributed solely to PD, while in the majority of patients back

Magic and cognition: a scoping review of empirical evidence on cognitive and neural processes.

INTRODUCTION: Magic, understood as a set of effects designed to produce experiences of impossibility, offers a distinctive methodological potential for cognitive science because it makes it possible to manipulate, with ecological validity, processes such as attention, perception, reasoning, and memory. Despite increasing research interest over the last two decades, the available evidence has not been systematically mapped across cognitive domains, methodological approaches, and the neural correlates underlying magic perception or processing. The aim of this scoping review was to map and synthe

Neuroeconomic adaptation to norm shifts is preserved in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterised by instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affect. Dysregulated negative emotional processing involving prefrontal and limbic circuits is considered a neural basis of BPD. However, it remains unclear how prefrontal modulation of social decision-making in BPD differs from non-psychiatric controls. METHODS: To investigate social decision-making in response to unfairness, we conducted an functional magnetic resonance imaging study involving adults with a diagnosis of BPD (n = 77) and healthy controls (HCs; n =

An EEG correlation framework to study state anxiety and learning under uncertainty.

Objective.Recent developments in computational neuroscience have shed light on the neural processes underlying altered decision-making under uncertainty in anxiety. These disruptions are partly attributed to impaired encoding of precision-weighted prediction errors (pwPEs), which guide belief updating during learning and decision-making, as described by hierarchical Bayesian models. In this paper, we introduce a gamified paradigm for collecting decision-making data, together with a framework for extracting EEG features linked to computationally relevant variables, drawing on principles from ne

Modulating cue-induced craving in alcohol dependence syndrome: A functional magnetic resonance imaging blood oxygen level-dependent activation study of adjunctive cathodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation over the insula.

BACKGROUND: Cue-elicited craving is a major precipitant of relapse in alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS). High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-Tdcs) modulates craving circuits, while blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) maps brain activity to reveal addiction mechanisms. AIM: To compare the impact of cathodal HD-tDCS over the insula on cue-induced craving in ADS individuals, using changes in fMRI BOLD signal to measure individual differences in neural activation. METHODOLOGY: This study employed a randomized, double-arm, sham-
