Patient-generated subjective global assessment predicts cachexia and death in patients with head, neck and abdominal cancer: A retrospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Cancer is a complex disease, with poor prognosis when associated with malnutrition. This condition can lead to Cancer Cachexia (CC), a syndrome characterized by loss of muscle mass with or without fat loss, often associated with higher risk of death. Although there are recommended screening tools to assess nutritional status in cancer patients, such as Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), little is known about CC prediction. The aim was to investigate the association between nutritional status of patients with head, neck and abdominal cancer, assessed by …

Covariation between plasma phosphate and daytime cortisol in early Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Disturbed phosphate homeostasis in early Parkinson's disease (PD) may originate from a stress-related condition and nutritional status among other risk factors, age, and gender. METHODS: Risk of malnutrition using Mini-nutritional assessment (MNA score) and plasma levels of protein markers and daytime cortisol at the time of diagnosis in PD (n = 75) were compared with a control group (n = 24). Cognition was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE score) and motor function using Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS-part III scale). RESULTS: The patients w…

PROUD: effects of preoperative long-term immunonutrition in patients listed for liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end stage liver disease are characteristically malnourished which is associated with poor outcome. Formulas enriched with arginine, omega-3 fatty acids, and nucleotides, "immunonutrients", potentially improve their nutritional status. This study is designed to evaluate the clinical outcome of long-term "immunonutrition" of patients with end-stage liver disease while on the waiting list for liver transplantation. METHODS/DESIGN: A randomized controlled double blind multi-center clinical trial with two parallel groups comprising a total of 142 newly registered patients…

Branched-chain amino acid enriched supplements as therapy for liver disease.

Altered amino acid metabolism is a hallmark of liver disease, characterized by low levels of circulating BCAAs and elevated levels of circul … reased frequency of hepatic failure and overall complication frequency. Both studies found improved nutritional status associated with BCAA supplementation. On balance, BCAA supplementation appears to be associated with decreased frequency of complications of cirrhosis and improved nutritional status when prescribed as maintenance therapy. Cost and palatability may …

Effects of intradialytic parenteral nutrition in chronic haemodialysis patients with malnutrition: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Protein and calorie malnutrition is frequently observed in chronic haemodialysis (HD) patients. Recently it has been suggested that intradialytic nutritional support with amino acids may improve nutritional status and increase immunocompetence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of intradialytic infusion of amino acids, lipids and glucose on body composition and other parameters of nutritional status in patients undergoing HD. METHODS: Seven patients with a mean age of 77 +/- 6 years (range, 60-86 years), a mean BMI of 20.1 +/- 2.8 (range, 16.1-24.4) and cl…

Growth, serum biochemistries, and amino acids of term infants fed formulas with amino acid and protein concentrations similar to human milk.

We tested the hypothesis that amino acid intake from infant formulas modified to be similar to human milk would result in indices of protein metabolism more like those in human milk-fed infants. Formula-fed infants received for 12 weeks one of three isocaloric formulations of a whey-adapted formula that differed in protein concentration: 11, 13, or 15 g/L. Infants consumed similar volumes of formula or human milk. Serum urea nitrogen concentrations reflected the protein content of the diets. Plasma indices of protein nutritional status were normal and did not differ among groups. Growth rates …

Advanced nutrition support therapy practices of registered dietitian nutritionists: A survey of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Dietitians in Nutrition Support Dietetics Practice Group and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Dietetics Practice Section.

Nutrition support therapy (NST) requires continuous monitoring and interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize nutrition status and prevent complications. Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) are pivotal in managing NST, using their expertise to assess malnutrition risk, evaluate suitable nutrition routes, and lead teams in evidence-based nutrition care. However, not all RDNs operate at an expert level owing to varying education, training, and clinical experiences. A survey to determine expert-level RDN NST practices was created and distributed through the Dietitians in Nutrition Support

Nutritional care of cancer patients: a survey on patients' needs and medical care in reality.

PURPOSE: Cancer patients represent a patient group with a wide-range of nutrition related problems which are often under-recognized and undertreated. In order to assess the status quo of nutritional care in Germany, we conducted a survey among patients with different types of cancer. METHODS: A standardized questionnaire was distributed online by two national umbrella organizations for self-help groups. RESULTS: 1335 participants completed the questionnaire. 69 % of the participants reported having received information on nutrition and/or specific nutrition-related symptoms. Most often this

Chyme Reinfusion in Intestinal Failure Related to Temporary Double Enterostomies and Enteroatmospheric Fistulas.

Some temporary double enterostomies (DES) or entero-atmospheric fistulas (EAF) have high output and are responsible for Type 2 intestinal failure. Intravenous supplementations (IVS) for parenteral nutrition and hydration compensate for intestinal losses. Chyme reinfusion (CR) artificially restores continuity pending surgical closure. CR treats intestinal failure and is recommended by European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) when possible. The objective of this study was to show changes in nutritional status…
