It is estimated 1.5 billion of the global population suffer from chronic pain with prevalence increasing with demographics including age. It is suggested long-term exposure to chronic could cause further health challenges reducing people's quality of life. Therefore, it is imperative to use effective treatment options. We explored the current pharmaceutical treatments available for chronic pain management to better understand drug efficacy and pain reduction. A systematic methodology was developed and published in PROSPERO (CRD42021235384). Keywords of opioids, acute pain, pain management, chr

Aim: Vitamin D deficiency is a prevalent condition among the general population, all around the world. Vitamin D deficiency is defined as serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D lower than 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/ml). It is a known actor in the skeletal system through the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism and bone mineralization. Still, the role of vitamin D as an immunomodulator is yet to be acknowledged by healthcare practitioners as a cause, precipitating factor, and contributor to a variety of diseases. Vitamin D is shown to be an actor in multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, insu

OBJECTIVES: The National Institutes of Health and Infectious Diseases Society of America guidelines recommend tocilizumab or baricitinib in the management of severe COVID-19. Despite clinical trials on the individual agents, there are no large-scale studies comparing the two agents to guide the selection of one versus the other. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes and adverse effects of baricitinib versus tocilizumab in the management of severe COVID-19.
DESIGN: Retrospective, observational cohort study.
SETTING: Eleven acute care hospitals in a large health system in Georg

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections are an increasing public health threat and people with spinal cord injury (SCI) are disproportionally at higher risk. National guidelines concerning urine testing after SCI are conflicting. Unnecessary urine testing in the SCI population (with high asymptomatic bacteriuria prevalence) leads to unnecessary antimicrobial use, propagating resistant infections, especially urinary tract infections (UTIs).
OBJECTIVES: (a) Describe UTI antimicrobial adherence in patients with SCI. (b) Explore SCI patient knowledge and attitudes toward curren

About 60% of southern Africa's population lives in rural areas with limited access to basic services and amenities such as clean and safe water, affordable and clean energy, and balanced and nutritious diets. Resource scarcity has direct and indirect impacts on nutrition, human health, and well-being of mostly poor rural communities. Climate change impacts in the region are manifesting through low crop yields, upsurge of vector borne diseases (malaria and dengue fever), and water and food-borne diseases (cholera and diarrhoea). This study applied a water-energy-food (WEF) nexus analytical live

INTRODUCTION: Self-management for people with epilepsy (PWE) should lead to shared decision-making and thus to adherence to the treatment plan. eHealth is an important way of supporting PWE in their self-management.
METHOD: In this survey, we used a mixed method to explore the following: 1) which factors were monitored by PWE and how (using pen and paper or eHealth-tools), 2) how many PWE own a computer or smartphone, and 3) how do they perceive the use of eHealth. A consecutive series of 1000 PWE attending the outpatient clinic of a tertiary epilepsy center were asked to fill in a questionna

BACKGROUND: Health information technology (HIT) could improve care coordination by providing clinicians remote access to information, improving legibility, and allowing asynchronous communication, among other mechanisms. We sought to determine, from a clinician perspective, how care is coordinated and to what extent HIT is involved when transitioning patients between emergency departments, acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies in settings across the United States.
METHODS: We performed a qualitative study with clinicians and information technology professi

PURPOSE: Children with disabilities are two to three times more likely to become overweight or obese than typically developing children. Children with spina bifida (SB) are at particular risk, yet obesity prevalence and weight management with this population are under-researched. This retrospective chart review explored how weight is assessed and discussed in a children's SB outpatient clinic.
METHOD: Height/weight data were extracted from records of children aged 2-18 with a diagnosis of SB attending an outpatient clinic at least once between June 2009-2011. Body mass index was calculated an

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer show a strong interest in digital health interventions (DHIs); however, limited pooled evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) exists regarding their quantitative benefits in this population. This systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42024593656) screened a total of 9949 records from six databases, registers and other sources up to January 5, 2025, and included 31 articles from 25 studies examining DHIs targeting psychological outcomes among AYAs. Most DHIs were conducted via websites (n = 13), mobile applications (n = 5),

Metabolic syndrome (MS) represents a major global health problem affecting a large proportion of the population. The improper management of peripheral carbohydrates and lipids leads to behavioral changes in neurons of the limbic brain. This work studied male rats that received diets high in carbohydrates, lipids, and their combination for ninety days. The study examined how peripheral metabolic changes and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis alterations affect dendritic structure in limbic brain regions, thereby inducing anxiety-related behavioral responses. Our results show that male ra

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) continues to pose a major global health challenge, driven by population aging and the growing prevalence of diabetes. Effective management of complex, calcified lesions increasingly relies on targeted plaque-modification strategies that enhance vessel compliance and improve long-term patency. This review summarizes current vessel-preparation tools-including specialty balloons, atherectomy systems, and intravascular lithotripsy-highlighting their mechanisms, indications, limitations, and supporting evidence. While registries and observational studies demonstrat

BACKGROUND: Middle aortic syndrome (MAS) is a rare clinical condition in children that is associated with a significant risk of morbidity and mortality. Delayed diagnosis and inadequate treatment can lead to severe complications, resulting in life-threatening consequences.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper, we present two cases involving two 10-year-old Saudi girls diagnosed with MAS who presented with systemic hypertension. Echocardiography demonstrated a patent aortic arch; however, it showed abnormal diastolic flow in the descending aorta, which facilitated the diagnosis of MAS.
