Diagnosis of human strongyloidiasis by immunofluorescence, using Strongyloides ratti and S. stercoralis larvae.

The sensitivity and specificity of an indirect immunofluorescent antibody assay for the diagnosis of human strongyloidiasis has been investigated. Sera were obtained from 160 Australian ex-servicemen who had been prisoners-of-war in Southeast Asia during World War II, 44 of whom proven parasitologically to have strongyloidiasis; these men did not have concurrent infections with other helminths. In addition, sera were collected from 44 age- and sex-matched Australians who were not thought to have been exposed to S. stercoralis, and from 44 Filipino subjects. Antibodies were measured by using li

Incarceration among adults who are in the public mental health system: rates, risk factors, and short-term outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Incarceration of people with mental illness has become a major social, clinical, and economic concern, with an estimated 2.1 million incarcerations in 2007. Prior studies have primarily focused on mental illness rates among incarcerated persons. This study examined rates of and risk factors for incarceration and reincarceration, as well as short-term outcomes after incarceration, among patients in a large public mental health system. METHODS: The data set included 39,463 patient records combined with 4,544 matching incarceration records from the county jail system during fiscal yea

Walk a mile in my old shoes: an intervention study on age simulation suit training for correctional staff.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Correctional populations are ageing rapidly, yet correctional staff often lack the knowledge and attitudinal competencies required to address ageing-related needs. While simulation technologies, such as simulation suits, have demonstrated improvements in cognitive and affective learning outcomes within educational and clinical healthcare settings, their application in correctional training remains unexplored. This study examined the feasibility and exploratory outcomes of a training program incorporating ageing simulation into correctional staff training. RESEARCH D

The impact of face-to-face social exclusion on university students' interpersonal cooperation behavior: a hyperscanning study based on fNIRS.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on social exclusion adopt virtual paradigms focusing on unilateral responses, while neglecting real-world face-to-face interaction and its neural basis. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning allows recording of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during dyadic interaction, providing a novel approach for investigating interpersonal cooperation. METHODS: This study recruited 24 dyads of college students randomly assigned to social exclusion and inclusion groups. Using fNIRS hyperscanning combined with a face-to-face rejection paradigm and th

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Their Relationship With Psychological Disorders and Violent Criminal Behaviour Within a Forensic Psychiatric Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events occurring before the age of 18 that may undermine a child's sense of safety, stability and attachment. ACEs can have lifelong consequences, including an elevated risk of developing psychological disorders and an increased likelihood of engaging in delinquent or violent behaviour later in life. Clinical practice suggests that many forensic psychiatric patients have a history of ACEs, but scientific research on ACEs within this population remains limited. AIM: To study the prevalence of ACEs before the age of 18 within a larg

Dual disorders: an overview.

The coexistence of substance use disorders (SUD) and other mental disorders - commonly referred to as dual disorders (DD) - is highly prevalent and clinically significant. Although various terms have been used over time (e.g., psychiatric comorbidity, dual pathology), the lack of a standardised definition has created inconsistencies in diagnosis, communication, research, and treatment. Epidemiological studies estimate that 30-80% of individuals with SUD have co-occurring psychiatric disorders, with prevalence depending on the substance involved, gender, age, and the population studied (general

Peer support to address mental health, social determinants of health, financial wellness, and reentry navigation.

INTRODUCTION: Incarceration in the United States disproportionately affects individuals with mental illness and substance use disorders and often exacerbates mental health conditions due to the trauma of arrest, separation, disrupted care, and stigma. Forensic Peer Support (FPS) can improve recovery outcomes by building unique trust and rapport that supports community reintegration and recovery outcomes. METHOD: This paper describes findings from a qualitative study of 22 participants who are a sub-sample of the larger Recovery Finance study, a multi-level community based participatory resear

Understanding Deaths in Custodial Environments: A Systematic Review of Global Trends and Risk Factors.

Deaths in custodial settings mark a critical intersection of human rights, public health, and state accountability and serve as a key indicator of systemic deficiencies within correctional institutions. Evidence consistently shows that suicide is the leading cause of death in custody, especially during the early detention period. This trend reflects increased psychological vulnerability, pre-existing mental health issues, and limited access to specialized care. Natural causes - such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, infections, and complications from chronic illnesses - also make up

From custody to abandonment: Conceptualising Aboriginal people's drug treatment discontinuation after release.

BACKGROUND: Release from custody marks a period of acute risk for Aboriginal people receiving opioid agonist treatment, with discontinuation rates nearly five times higher than in non-Aboriginal populations. Yet the contexts and experiences shaping decisions to stop treatment remain poorly understood. METHODS: This qualitative study examines the experiences of 22 Aboriginal people who discontinued long-acting injectable buprenorphine (LAIB) within 12 weeks of release from custody in New South Wales, Australia. Drawing on Biehl's concept of zones of abandonment alongside Aboriginal scholarship

Inflammation Mediates the Effects of Incarceration on Chronic Health Conditions: Results from a Nationally Representative Sample of Older Adults.

PURPOSE: The U.S. leads the world in incarceration, and individuals with incarceration histories have poorer health outcomes. Inflammation has been proposed as a mechanism linking incarceration and chronic disease, but empirical evidence remains limited. This study tested whether inflammation mediates the association between incarceration and chronic health conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were drawn from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Incarceration history was assessed via self-report of spending ≥3 consecutive days in jail or prison. Inflammation was measured using C-reactive

Emergency Department Thoracotomy: Time to Stop - A Trauma Video Review.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency department thoracotomy (EDT) can restore spontaneous circulation in selected trauma patients as a bridge to definitive operating room repair. Compared with medical cardiopulmonary resuscitation, there is little guidance on EDT resuscitation duration in trauma. We hypothesized that prolonged EDT resuscitation efforts was not associated with durable return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) (ROSC with survival to operating room). METHODS: This institutional review board approved study was performed at a level 1 trauma center from January 2022 to January 2023. Trauma bay v

Cooperation patterns in depression: Insights from a meta-analysis of responsive and expressive social interactive paradigms.

The use of high-ecological validity social interactive paradigms to study social impairments in depression has burgeoned in recent 10 years. However, abnormal social behaviors in depression have exhibited substantial yet unexplained variations, ranging from reduced to increased cooperation. We proposed an attentional focus theory and introduced a novel classification of social interactive paradigms, distinguishing between responsive (attentional focus on others) and expressive (attentional focus on self) paradigms. This framework systematically elucidates the underlying reasons for reduced and

"Quick, simple, and friendly": Understanding the acceptability and accessibility of a nurse and peer-led, mobile model of hepatitis C care adjacent to community corrections in Australia.

BACKGROUND: People on community corrections orders are at high-risk for hepatitis C but opportunities for hepatitis C care may be missed due to poor integration of prison-based healthcare. The C No More study is a pilot feasibility study of point-of-care hepatitis C testing and rapid treatment initiation delivered adjacent to community corrections settings in Melbourne, Australia, via a mobile, nurse and peer-led, low-threshold model of care. METHODS: We conducted a mixed methods evaluation using Levesque's Conceptual Framework of Access to Health to understand participants' experiences and p

To SHARE or not to SHARE: Exploring incarcerated women's decisions about enrolling in exposure-based group therapy.

Exposure therapies effectively treat traumatic stress sequelae, including that which follows sexual violence victimization (SVV). Carceral facilities house women with significantly higher rates of SVV than community samples, yet they rarely implement this form of treatment. In this study, women with histories of SVV (n = 63) completed semistructured qualitative interviews about their decision to enroll or not enroll in an exposure-based group therapy called Survivors Healing from Abuse: Recovery through Exposure while incarcerated. All study participants were previously incarcerated in a priso

Genotype distribution of hepatitis C virus in the province of Gaziantep, a 10-year evaluation.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis infections. Gaziantep is located southeast part of Turkey and has a border with Syria. More than 400,000 Syrian refugees live in Gaziantep. The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution of HCV genotypes among Syrian patients and in people who inject drugs.Serum samples form 1,628 individuals (786 female, 842 male) which were sent to our laboratory for genotyping between January 2013 and December 2022, were analyzed retrospectively. Three different HCV genotyping assays (Qiagen, RTA and Abbott) were used during the 10-year

"Treated like a Human Being": perspectives of people who inject drugs attending low-threshold HCV treatment at a syringe service program in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment can effectively cure HCV among people who inject drugs (PWID). Perspectives of PWID treated in innovative models can reveal program features that address barriers to treatment, and guide implementation of similar models. METHODS: We interviewed 29 participants in the intervention arm of a randomized trial. The trial enrolled PWID with HCV in New York City from 2017 to 2020 and tested the effectiveness of a low-threshold HCV treatment model at a syringe services program. Participants were purposively sampled and interviewed in English or Spanish. T
