Pregnancy loss: spontaneous and induced abortions among young women in Lusaka, Zambia.

An estimated 60% of all adolescent pregnancies in low-income countries are unintended. The present study was carried out at the university hospital in Lusaka, Zambia over a four-month period in 2005. The aim was to explore experiences of pregnancy loss and to ascertain the girl's contraceptive knowledge and use and their partner's involvement in the pregnancy/abortion. Eighty-seven girls aged 13-19 years admitted to hospital for incomplete abortions were interviewed. Of these girls, 53 (61%) had had a spontaneous abortion and 34 (39%) had undergone an unsafe induced abortion. Significantly mor

Cycles of abuse nurtured by concealment: a clinical report.

At present, health care staff do not seem to have sufficient knowledge about their patients' abusive experiences. The aim of the present study is to analyze and discuss what the implications might be for the encounter between patients and health care professionals, when experiences of abuse are concealed. The methodology of this article is varied: a personal narrative, medical records, sociological theoretical literature and empirical evidence. From the narrative we learn that concealment of abuse was devastating for the patient. She was "treated" in vain as a correct diagnosis was not made, w

[Long-term care services in Spain: an overview].

To date, both in Spain and virtually all the other European Union (EU) countries, dependency has been seen to be a fundamentally private problem to be dealt with by the family concerned. In this way, whether through informal carers or contracted professionals, in the domestic environment or in care homes, it is the dependent person themselves and their families who currently bear the majority of the costs. In light of this, current concern lies in the social change that is coming on, mainly the accelerated aging process and the increased participation of middle-aged women in the labour market,

Evidence-based practice, response to intervention, and the prevention of reading difficulties.

PURPOSE: This article provides an evidence-based perspective on what school communities can do to lower the prevalence of reading difficulties among their pupils through preventive interventions. It also delineates the roles that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) might play in these interventions. METHOD: This article is organized to first provide a broad overview of current directions in research, practice, and policy in educational interventions, with an emphasis on how the three are increasingly integrated to respond to evidence showing that American school children are underperforming i

Breast is best for babies.

Breastfeeding is the optimal method of infant feeding. Breast milk provides almost all the necessary nutrients, growth factors and immunological components a healthy term infant needs, Other advantages of breastfeeding include reduction of incidences and severity of infections; prevention of allergies; possible enhancement of cognitive development; and prevention of obesity, hypertension and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Health gains for breastfeeding mothers include lactation amenorrhea, early involution of the uterus, enhanced bonding between the mother and the infant, and reduction i

There's no such thing as a healthy glow: cutaneous malignant melanoma--the case against suntanning.

One of the objectives of the 1992 United Kingdom Government White Paper 'Health of the Nation', is to reduce ill health and death caused by skin cancers by the year 2005. The Europe Against Cancer Programme shares those aims for the entire European population. Skin cancer was the first cancer demonstrated to have a chemical cause, with Percival Pott's 1775 description of squamous cell carcinoma of the scrotum induced by chimney soot, and skin cancers were also the first to be linked with ionising radiation. Currently there is a general consensus amongst researchers which acknowledges solar ult

Lacunar stroke in a hypertensive football player: implications in managing hypertension in athletes.

PURPOSE: A 28-year-old hypertensive professional football player suffered a lacunar stroke. Given the rarity of stroke at this young age, the contributory roles of hypertension and competitive athletics merit consideration. CASE SUMMARY: A 28-year-old defensive lineman, with long-standing, albeit recently well-controlled hypertension, experienced slurred speech and veering to his right after a game. Computerized tomography revealed a small internal capsule infarct. Diagnostic investigation, including coagulation profiling, sickle screen, antiphospholipid antibody, carotid imaging, and echocar

Epidemiology of suicide in elderly people in Madrid, Spain (1990-1994).

The progressive aging of the population as a whole, the frequent appearance of degenerative diseases, and the greater frequency of suicide among persons older than 65 years than in younger age groups, are worrisome issues that deserve investigation. The aim of this study was therefore to analyze different epidemiological and social factors that influence suicide behaviour in elderly subjects in Madrid (Spain) during a 5-year period from January 1990 to December 1994. Post-mortem reports on all deaths that were examined at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Madrid were studied. All cases of

Development and evaluation of the IPEConnect model: A quasi-experimental study to enhance interprofessional collaboration among health students.

BACKGROUND: Effective interprofessional collaboration is essential for optimal patient care, but inadequate training often hinders teamwork and communication among healthcare professionals. Interprofessional Education (IPE) can address this issue by fostering collaborative learning across disciplines. The integration of technology in IPE enhances these outcomes by providing accessible, innovative platforms for learning. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop and evaluate the IPEConnect model, a technology-based IPE approach, designed to improve interprofessional collaboration and care manageme

Exploring Medication Safety in Transitions From Prison to Community: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The prison population in England and Wales exceeds 88,000, with a high turnover - 47% of sentenced admissions in 2023 served less than 12 months. Transitions from prison to the community are recognised as high-risk periods for medication-related harm, driven by complex health needs, short custodial stays, and fragmented healthcare systems. While national and international guidance exists to support safe medication management, implementation during prison-community transitions remains inconsistent, and evidence on both the drivers of unsafe medication practices and potential solutio

Echoes of isolation: Exploring Arab family perspectives and health care providers' reflections in ICU settings during critical care.

BACKGROUND: Families are reporting loss of interactions and communication in response to restrict isolation measures. Other tangible losses include income, access to resources, engagement, involvement in decision-making process and other planned activities. Listening to families' needs, concerns and say has been identified as one of the most important and least accomplished health care providers' roles in the intensive care units (ICUs). AIMS: (1) To explore the experiences and concerns of Arab family members and health care professionals facing the challenges during ICU isolation, and (2) to

Health Care-Associated Infections and the Radiology Department.

Health care-associated infections (HCAIs) are a significant concern for both health care workers (HCWs) and patients. They are a major contributing factor of disease in industrialized countries, and are responsible for significant morbidity, mortality, and a direct annual financial loss of $6-7 billion in North America alone. They are an increasingly challenging health issue due to multidrug-resistant pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci among others, along with an increasing number of susceptible patients. Over the last three decad

How Does the Mental Health Lived Experience Workforce Describe and Enact Our Discipline? A Narrative Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, mental health systems continue to grapple with providing recovery-oriented services as part of broader reform efforts. Critical to the objective of transforming mental health services is the employment of a rights-based, non-clinical lived experience workforce. Vital to undertaking the roles, and supporting this workforce, is a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and practices of the discipline, particularly in situations where rapid growth may see this workforce developing in an ad hoc way. The aim of this review was to determine how members of the mental hea

Factors that influence participation in physical activity for people with bipolar disorder: a synthesis of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems contribute significantly to the overall disease burden worldwide and are major causes of disability, suicide, and ischaemic heart disease. People with bipolar disorder report lower levels of physical activity than the general population, and are at greater risk of chronic health conditions including cardiovascular disease and obesity. These contribute to poor health outcomes. Physical activity has the potential to improve quality of life and physical and mental well-being. OBJECTIVES: To identify the factors that influence participation in physical activity

'It Is of Course About Being Human Together': Co-Development of a Primary Progressive Aphasia Awareness Campaign to Enhance Understanding of Speech and Language Therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, there is a lack of awareness of rare dementias such as those led by language decline (the primary progressive aphasias, PPA). The main treatment for PPA is speech and language therapy, yet many people are unaware of the benefits and are often not referred on by other health care professionals. Delays in diagnosis can exacerbate a delay in accessing resources such as speech and language therapy which can assist in maintenance of communication and independence. Some people affected by PPA are able to seek out information independently and navigate their own way to these s
