The dynamics of platelet deposition and embolization from control and heparin bonded polyurethane catheters (CPC and HBPC) was evaluated with In-111 labeled autologous platelets (IN-PLT) and a computerized gamma camera (CGC). A commercially available system of caesium iodide crystal mini-detectors (Oakfield Instruments, Oxon, UK) was modified so that it was suitable for dual isotopic measurement of the plasma protein accumulation index (PPA)- a measure of pulmonary endothelial permeability. Using this modified system the mean PPA x 10(-3) min-1 +/- (S.E.M.) recorded in 11 normal subjects (22 lungs) was 0.18 (0.08) and in 6 patients (9 lungs) with the adult respiratory distress syndrome was 2.88 (0.63) (P less than 0.02). In an effort to detect extrapulmonary sites of radiogallium accumulation in cases of sarcoidosis, 145 separate Ga-67 citrate studies of 114 patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis were examined. The most characteristic extrapulmonary radiogallium uptake pattern was the "panda sign" in 47 patients (41%). The hepatic perfusion index (HPI) was measured in 180 patients with colorectal cancer: 109 with primary colorectal cancer, 38 with suspected recurrent colorectal cancer and 33 following curative resection of colorectal cancer. A 9 cm-lesion of telangiectatic focal nodular hyperplasia was incidentally identified in a 31-yr-old female. Despite a typical appearance by X-ray computed tomography and ultrasonography, scintigraphy with technetium-99m-(99mTc) colloid, 99mTc-diethyliminodiacetic acid, and 99mTc-labeled red cells failed to demonstrate any abnormalities. These findings are felt to reflect the relative lack of architectural disruption that histologically characterizes this particular lesion. The present report described the imaging characteristics of the telangiectatic form of focal nodular hyperplasia.

A 27-year-old female patient with alcoholic cirrhosis was reported. She was admitted to the hospital because of jaundice and ascites after heavy drinking. Scrotal scintigraphy using a gamma-camera and 740 MBq of 99mTc-labeled human serum albumin was performed on 43 patients with suspected varicocele. Eleven patients with early syphilis were selected at the University Dermatology Clinik in Frankfurt/M, and bone scintigraphy was performed to check for bone lesions as sign of a systemic character of the disease. The 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate scintigrams were compared with those in a control group of 50 patients. The usefulness of IMP-SPECT and rCBF image by 133Xe inhalation method on rCBF in patients with moyamoya disease was studied. Six patients with moyamoya disease were diagnosed by cerebral angiogram, and STA-MCA anastomosis technique and EMS were done to reconstruct the rCBF. 99mTc-HEDP bone scan was carried out on 12 long-time haemodialysed patients, suffering from bone pains. Roentgenological, radionuclide, ultrasound and thermographic methods were evaluated in 31 patients with acute and 85 with chronic cholecystitis. It was established that the succession of using of the above methods depends on the course of cholecystitis. In acute cholecystitis examination is begun with thermography and terminated by ultrasound. In chronic cholecystitis ultrasound is the first method to be followed by radionuclide methods. A 66-yr-old male with systemic mastocytosis is presented along with classic imaging findings of dense bone on radiographs, intense uptake on bone scan and marrow expansion on bone marrow scan. Dual photon absorptiometry (DPA) measurements of the skeleton revealed a very high bone mineral measurement of 1.678 grams per square centimeter (lumbar vertebrae 2 through 4). It is suggested that DPA may be useful to follow the development of mast cell disease in the bones.

Osteomyelitis of the skull base is the most severe form of malignant otitis externa. As a result of having treated 13 patients with skull base osteomyelitis over a 4-year period, we have developed a method of staging and monitoring this malady using gallium and technetium scanning techniques.
