Idiopathic peritonitis in horses: a retrospective study of 130 cases in Sweden (2002-2017).

BACKGROUND: Peritonitis in horses is historically associated with prolonged treatment regimens of broad-spectrum antimicrobials and a guarded prognosis for survival. The condition is most often seen as a secondary complication to traumatic injuries involving the abdominal cavity, rupture of bowel or abdominal surgery. However, cases of idiopathic peritonitis with no such underlying cause have been described. In Sweden idiopathic peritonitis is commonly identified and, in contrast to peritonitis secondary to traumatic incidents, affected horses appear to respond well to medical treatment. The o

Validation of the oncologic effect of hepatic resection for T2 gallbladder cancer: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: While extended cholecystectomy is recommended for T2 gallbladder cancer (GBC), the role of hepatic resection for T2 GBC is unclear. This study aimed to identify the necessity of hepatic resection in patients with T2 GBC. METHODS: Data of 81 patients with histopathologically proven T2 GBC who underwent surgical resection between January 1999 and December 2017 were enrolled from a retrospective database. Of these, 36 patients had peritoneal-side (T2a) tumors and 45 had hepatic-side (T2b) tumors. To identify the optimal surgical management method, T2 GBC patients were classified into

Hemicraniectomy for Supratentorial Primary Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Retrospective, Propensity Score Matched Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) contributes disproportionately to stroke mortality, and randomized trials of surgical treatments for ICH have not shown benefit. Decompressive hemicraniectomy (DHC) improves functional outcome in patients with malignant middle cerebral artery ischemic stroke, but data in ICH patients is limited. We hypothesized that DHC would reduce in-hospital mortality and poor functional status (defined as modified Rankin scale ≥5) among survivors at 3 months, without increased complications. METHODS: We performed a retrospec

Photo-photochemotherapy in Juvenile-onset Mycosis Fungoides: A Retrospective Study on 9 Patients.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a rare disease and is considered the most common form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Given the infrequent incidence of MF in patients under the age of 20, there are no established guidelines for the treatment of these patients; the overwhelming majority have an early-stage disease and progression to more advanced stages is very rare. This study presents the safety and effectiveness of photo-photochemotherapy as a first-line approach in the treatment of an early-stage MF even in young patients.

Fluoroquinolone use for uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: The United States Food & Drug Administration released an advisory in 2016 that fluoroquinolones be relegated to second-line agents for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) given reports of rare but serious side effects; similar warnings have followed from Health Canada and the European Medicines Agency. The objective was to determine whether alternative non-fluoroquinolone agents are as effective as fluoroquinolones in the treatment of UTIs. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using administrative health data from six Canadian provinces. We

Predictive factors for cancer-associated thrombosis in a large retrospective single-center study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between cancer and thrombosis has been studied for years, but reliable guidelines for thromboprophylaxis in that situation are still unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the files of 3159 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed solid tumors at Jules Bordet Institute from January 2008 to December 2011. Among them, 99 developed a symptomatic thromboembolic episode and were matched with 2 controls (nested case control). The aim was to identify risk factors of thromboembolic events and to validate in our setting the Khorana score. RESULTS: In the cohort st

Acute cholecystitis as a rare and overlooked complication in stroke patients: A retrospective monocentric study.

Acute cholecystitis (AC) is a rare but possible medical complication found in stroke patients. As many stroke patients present with neurologic symptoms, such as altered mental status, motor weakness, global aphasia, or dysarthria, clinical symptoms and signs of AC are often unexpressed or overlooked. As a result, the diagnosis of AC is often delayed with subsequent secondary complications in these stroke patients. This study aims to evaluate the clinical incidence, manifestations, and predictive factors of AC in stroke patients.A retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2013 an

Intestinal Parasitic Infections in Internationally Adopted Children: A 10-Year Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) represent one of the leading causes of morbidity in the world. Children involved in international adoptions constitute a special group of subjects with specific problems and specific healthcare needs. Nevertheless, in current literature there are insufficient data on IPI in this subset of children. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of IPI in a cohort of internationally adopted children and to investigate epidemiologic factors and clinical features related to IPIs. METHODS: A retrospective study involving internationally adopted child
