Fractures due to severe generalised osteoporosis in a 44-year-old male with diabetes mellitus.

A 44-year-old Chinese male with a 7-year history of diabetes developed spontaneous fractures affecting the femur and distal tibia and fibula within a period of 4 months. Spontaneous rib fractures were also present. There was additional evidence of extensive tissue damage with retinopathy, proteinuria, necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum, peripheral neuropathy and autonomic neuropathy. Investigation confirmed the presence of generalised osteoporosis and showed no evidence of other metabolic bone disease or abnormal vitamin D metabolism. Mild hypogonadism was also present and investigation sugges

Benign fibrous histiocytoma of bone.

The clinical, radiologic, and pathological features of eight cases of fibrohistiocytic bone lesions histologically identical to the nonossifying fibroma of childhood are presented. They differed from the childhood lesion in their clinical and radiological features. They occurred in adults, and were frequently associated with pain in the absence of complicating fracture. They were not confined to the metaphysis of long bones. When metaphyseal, the lesions also frequently showed a tendency to involve the epiphysis. Others occurred in the diaphysis of long bones, in the pelvis, and in a rib. Thre

"Effort" thrombosis of the subclavian vein in a competitive swimmer.

"Effort" thrombosis is a unique form of subclavian and axillary vein thrombosis because it is the result of an unusual variant of the thoracic outlet syndrome. Another cause of subclavian vein thrombosis is local compression from trauma, tumor, or development anomalies; a third is intimal damage from indwelling central venous catheters. This is a case report of "effort" thrombosis of the subclavian vein in a competitive swimmer. A recently developed technique of local infusion of low-dose streptokinase therapy is used for clot lysis. Early diagnosis is essential for effective thrombus dissolut

Teratogenic activity in the mouse after oral administration of acetazolamide.

Acetazolamide was administered orally by gavage to pregnant mice twice a day on days six through 15 of gestation at a dose level of 300.0 mg/kg. This treatment produced maternal toxicity as evidenced by significantly reduced food consumption and body weight gain. Embryotoxicity demonstrated by significant reductions in fetal weight and crown-rump length was also observed. Resorption rates were considerably higher (77.9%) for the acetazolamide treated litters when compared to those from the control group (8.23%). A variety of malformations was observed in the acetazolamice-treated rats (rib and

Pseudoachondroplastic dysplasia in miniature poodles: clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features.

The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of pseudoachondroplastic dysplasia were studied in 13 affected Miniature Poodles. The disease became evident when pups were about 3 weeks old. Normal-appearing and affected pups were in the same litter, and both sexes were affected. Abnormal locomotion with abducted hindlimbs and flattened rib cages were accompanied by short, bent limbs and enlarged joints. Radiographically, areas of stippling and patchy densities were evident in the epiphyses. Histologically, these densities were identified as areas of bone associated with retarded ossificatio

[Surgery of the adrenals].

With 131 operated patients in the University Hospital of Urology in Zurich the indication for surgery in the 4 most frequent groups of adrenal disease is discussed. The preoperative localization of the tumor is exact in 96% of all cases with the serum examination in different stage of the vena cava. The appearance of hypertensive and hypotensive crises during surgery can be prevented with an adequate alpha-adrenergic blockade and volume replacement before and during the operation. In the surgery of Morbus Cushing we prefer the bilateral, dorsal incision on the 11th rib, if we haven't an unilat

Two cases of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Two cases of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome were reported with a review of pertinent literature. The first case was a 59-year-old man, whose autopsy was warranted. Signs and symptoms manifested in this case were basal cell carcinoma, generalized multiple nevi, multiple cysts in the jaws and long bones, pits in the palm and sole, frontal and occipital bossing, ossification of the falx cerebri, a bifid rib, renal fibroma and a patent foramen ovale. The family history revealed a hereditary predisposition as to the syndrome. The patient in the second case included basal cell carcinoma, multi

Diagnostic evaluation of blunt chest trauma by imaging-based application of artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly integral in clinical practice, such as during imaging tasks associated with the diagnosis and evaluation of blunt chest trauma (BCT). Due to significant advances in imaging-based deep learning, recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of AI in the diagnosis of BCT, with a focus on rib fractures, pulmonary contusion, hemopneumothorax and others, demonstrating significant clinical progress. However, the complicated nature of BCT presents challenges in providing a comprehensive diagnosis and prognostic evaluation, and current deep learnin

Lenz-Majewski syndrome and recurrent otitis media: Are they related or not?

Lenz-Majewski hyperostotic dwarfism (LMHD) is a rare condition characterized by intellectual disability, sclerosing bone dysplasia, dysmorphic facial features, brachydactyly, symphalangism and cutis laxa. Nineteen cases have been reported in the literature so far, eleven of them with PTDSS1 mutations. Although studies have had clinically similar findings, in some cases the authors have reported even rarer features such as hydrocephalus, facial paralysis, and cleft palate. We, hereby, report the case of the first patient with Lenz-Majewski syndrome (LMS) with molecular confirmation from Turkey.

Risk factors that predict mortality in patients with blunt chest wall trauma: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Over the last 10 years, research has highlighted emerging potential risk factors for poor outcomes following blunt chest wall trauma. The aim was to update a previous systematic review and meta-analysis of the risk factors for mortality in blunt chest wall trauma patients. METHODS: A systematic review of English and non-English articles using MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Library from January 2010 to March 2022 was completed. Broad search terms and inclusion criteria were used. All observational studies were included if they investigated estimates of association between a risk fact

De novo cavernous angiomas associated with developmental venous anomaly: a mini-series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Despite being previously considered as congenital lesions, recent studies agree to classify cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) as acquired forms with clear correlations with other pathological affections of the central nervous system (CNS). In addition, a special subgroup, notably known as de novo CCMs (dnCCM), are associated in a significant number of cases with developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) and, in other cases, with Radiotherapy treatments. METHODS: A mini-series of 4 patients with clinical history characterized by developing dnCCM is reported. In three patients, the

Athletic Injuries of the Thoracic Cage.

A variety of sports require exposure to high-impact trauma or characteristic repetitive movements that predispose to injuries around the thorax. Appropriate prognostication and timely management are vital, as untreated or undertreated injuries can lead to pain, disability, loss of playing time, or early termination of sports participation. The authors review common athletic injuries of the thoracic cage, encompassing muscular, osseous, and vascular conditions, with an emphasis on mechanism, imaging features, and management. The authors also review pertinent soft-tissue and bony anatomy, along

[Poland syndrome: about a case and review of the literature].

Poland syndrome is a rare congenital malformation associated with various degrees of thoracic and homolateral upper limb abnormalities. We report the case of a 7-year old girl who underwent exploration for depression of the left hemithorax associated with homolateral subclavicular mass. CT scan showed that the deformation of the thoracic wall was related to the absence of left pectoralis major muscle sterno-costal heads insertion associated with agenesis of the pectoralis minor muscle and hypoplasia of the anterior arches of the first six corresponding ribs. These abnormalities were related to…

Intraoperative airway obstruction related to tracheostomy tube malposition in a patient with achondroplasia and Jeune's syndrome.

A 14 year-old adolescent with achondroplasia and Jeune's syndrome (asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy) presented for cervical spine surgery in the prone position. Due to the need for home mechanical ventilation at night, the patient had a tracheostomy in place. With the first surgical procedure, the cuffed tracheostomy tube was left in place during prone positioning. Difficulties encountered with ventilation through the cuffed tracheostomy tube in the prone position necessitated aborting the case. During three subsequent surgeries, the tracheostomy tube was removed and an armored endotracheal tub

Fatal blunt injuries possibly resulting from sexual abuse of a calf: a case report.

We report a case of a calf-related fatality on a farm. The victim was a 60-year-old man who was possibly attempting to sexually approach the animal from behind when he was struck by it, sustaining fatal blunt injuries, mostly to the thorax. This case is reported because of its rarity and because of the particular circumstances of death. Fatal trauma associated with bovines is rare on the whole, and when it does occur it is usually caused by kicking or pushing during regular agricultural activity. Although the cause of death in our case could be determined, the circumstances and the manner of d

Traumatic lumbar hernia: report of a case.

Traumatic lumbar hernias are very rare. Here, we present a case of secondary lumbar hernia. A 44-year-old man sustained a crushing injury. On admission, ecchymotic, fluctuating swelling was present on his left flank with normal vital signs. Subcutaneous intestinal segments were revealed at his left flank on abdominal CT. Emergency laparotomy revealed a 10-cm defect on the left postero-lateral abdominal wall. The splenic flexure was herniated through the defect. Herniated segments was reduced, the defect was repaired with a polypropylene mesh graft. There was also a serosal tear and an ischemic
