False perception of motion in a patient who cannot compensate for eye movements.

We are usually unaware of the motion of an image across our retina that results from our own movement. For instance, during slow-tracking eye movements we do not mistake the shift of the image projected onto the retina for motion of the world around us, but instead perceive a stable world. Following early suggestions by von Helmholtz, it is commonly believed that this spatial stability is achieved by subtracting the retinal motion signal from an internal reference signal, such as a copy of the movement command (efference copy). Object motion is perceived only if the two differ. Although this c

A model system for studying protein-lipopolysaccharide synthesis, assembly, and insertion in the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) has been previously shown to cause the release of a complex of protein and lipoplysaccharide (PrLPS) from the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In this present work, cells of P. aeruginosa were incubated in a solution of EDTA, phosphate buffer, and hypertonic sucrose to prepare osmoplasts (osmotically sensitive cells). Osmoplasts were able to undergo self-repair of the outer-membrane damage resulting from EDTA treatment and to regain osmotic stability when incubated in growth medium/hypertonic sucrose for 2 h in the absence of exogenous PrLPS and in t

Female sexual desire disorders: subtypes, classification, personality factors and new directions for treatment.

Lack of sexual interest is highly prevalent in the general female population and, for more than two decades, low sexual desire has been the most common presenting problem in clinical institutions. The renewed interest in female sexual dysfunction has recently focused on biological and classification aspects whilst personality- and partner-related factors, as well as theoretical concepts, have largely been neglected. After critically reviewing the current diagnostic systems for female desire disorders, this paper specifically addresses the issues of personality and life history factors. In two

Theatre-Neuroscience: a brief perspective on the use of neuroscientific techniques to measure interpersonal coordination and the sense of self in theatrical contexts.

Cognitive neuroscientists have collaborated with the performing arts industry by bringing multimodal techniques, i.e. physiological, behavioural, and neural measurements, to the investigation of social cognition within these artistic contexts. This brief perspective presents, discusses, and evaluates the emerging field of 'Theatre-Neuroscience', which is an example of such collaboration. Here, I discuss the Theatre-Neuroscience research conducted to date, which has predominantly investigated the social-cognitive concepts of actors' and audiences' interpersonal coordination during live theatre

[Immunoglobulin-Like Domains Are the Key to Understanding Amyloid Aggregation].

Modern concepts of the mechanisms of protein aggregation with an emphasis on immunoglobulin-like domains (Ig domains) as a structural platform predisposed to the formation of aggregates with amyloid properties are presented in this review. Particular attention is paid to the muscle proteins titin and myosin-binding protein C, which form not fibrillar, but amorphous amyloid aggregates with a cross-β structure without an increase in the total content of the secondary β-structure, capable of binding thioflavin T (ThT) and Congo red. The absence of a nucleation phase during the formation of amyloi

An "Engram-Centric" Approach to Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) and Other Acute-Onset Amnesias.

The differential diagnosis of acute-onset amnesia includes transient global amnesia (TGA), transient epileptic amnesia (TEA), and functional (or psychogenic) amnesia. The most common of these, TGA, is a rare but well-described condition characterised by a self-limited episode of dense anterograde amnesia with variable retrograde amnesia. Although the clinical phenomenology of TGA is well described, its pathogenesis is not currently understood, thus preventing the development of evidence-based therapeutic recommendations. Here, TGA, TEA, and functional amnesia are considered in light of the his

The Rarest and Purest Form of Generosity: Simone Weil's Attention and Medical Practice.

Attention is essential to the practice of medicine. It is required for expert and timely diagnoses and treatments, is implicated in the techniques and practices oriented toward healing, and enlivens the interpersonal dimensions of care. Attention enables witnessing, presence, compassion, and discernment. The French philosopher and activist Simone Weil (1909-1943) developed one of the most original and important descriptions of attention in the last century. For Weil, attention is not an attitude of strained focus but of perceptive waiting that leads to the acquisition and integration of knowle

Transitional Care for Adult Patients with Congenital Heart Disease.

The prognosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) has improved, and most patients now reach adulthood. Owing to residual disease and comorbidities, it is recommended that adult CHD (ACHD) patients transition to adult care for lifelong monitoring and treatment. However, this transition period can be challenging for CHD patients owing to obstacles such as independence from their parents and establishing self-management. To achieve a seamless shift from pediatric to adult care and ensure continuity, it is important to educate and motivate patients appropriately, and an established transition system

Toll-like receptors in the functional orientation of cardiac progenitor cells.

Cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) have the potential to differentiate into several cell lineages with the ability to restore in cardiac tissue. Multipotency and self-renewal activity are the crucial characteristics of CPCs. Also, CPCs have promising therapeutic roles in cardiac diseases such as valvular disease, thrombosis, atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure, and cardiac remodeling. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), as the main part of the innate immunity, have a key role in the development and differentiation of immune cells. Some reports are found regarding the effect of TLRs in the maturatio

Schistosome vaccines: problems, pitfalls and prospects.

Human schistosomiasis caused by parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma remains an important public health problem in spite of concerted efforts at control. An effective vaccine would be a useful addition to control strategies that currently rely on chemotherapy, but such a product is not imminent. In this review, likely causes for the lack of progress are first considered. These include the strategies used by worms to evade the immune response, concepts that have misdirected the field, an emphasis on internal antigens, and the use of the laboratory mouse for vaccine testing. On a positiv

Current concepts of pemphigus with a deep insight into its molecular aspects.

Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune bullous disease involving both the skin and mucosal areas, which is characterized by intraepithelial flaccid blisters and erosions. The pathogenesis of this disease is not yet completely established, but novel intuitions into its pathogenesis have recently been published. An unanswered question in its pathophysiology is the mechanism of acantholysis or loss of keratinocyte cell adhesion. Acantholysis seems to result from a communal action of autoantibodies against numerous keratinocyte self-antigens, of which desmogleins 1 and 3, desmocollins and nondesmosom

Nanogel-based antigen-delivery system for nasal vaccines.

Nasal vaccination is considered a potent and practical immunization route for the induction of effective immunity to infectious diseases. Successful nasal vaccines require efficient delivery to, and retention of antigens within, nasal mucosa, including both the inductive (e.g., nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissues) and effector (e.g., turbinate covered with single-layer epithelium) tissues, where antigen-specific immune responses are initiated and executed, respectively. We developed an approach towards successful nasal vaccination by using self-assembled nano-sized hydrogel particles, know

Posttraumatic stress disorder after sexual assault: its psychodynamics and treatment.

Sexual assault as a major psychological trauma and a crime of violence evokes immediate symptoms of posttraumatic stress and, for many victims, long-term posttraumatic psychological sequelae. The victim, as the recipient of the rapist's anger and need to control, experiences terror, fear of death, and helplessness. This results in classic posttraumatic symptoms of haunting, intrusive recollections, numbing or constriction of feelings and focus, and increased arousal. When this psychological trauma is not integrated, anxiety, depression, phobias, impaired sexual and social adjustment, negative

Successful pregnancy after cardiac transplantation.

A case report of a successful pregnancy after cardiac allotransplantation is presented. The patient underwent transplantation for an inoperable cardiac tumor 5 years before conception. Cardiac function before and during all stages of pregnancy was normal. Maintenance immunosuppressive therapy consisting of prednisone and azathioprine was continued through gestation. The pregnancy was complicated by a primary herpes virus infection requiring parenteral acyclovir treatment and a single episode of preterm labor that was successfully treated. The infant was born at term, weighed 3278 gm, and has d

A psycho-educational intervention programme for parents with SGA foetuses supported by an adaptive mHealth system: design, proof of concept and usability assessment.

BACKGROUND: Technology-based approaches during pregnancy can facilitate the self-reporting of emotional health issues and improve well-being. There is evidence to suggest that stress during pregnancy can affect the foetus and result in restricted growth and preterm birth. Although a number of mobile health (mHealth) approaches are designed to monitor pregnancy and provide information about a specific aspect, no proposal specifically addresses the interventions in parents at risk of having small-for-gestational-age (SGA) or premature babies. Very few studies, however, follow any design and usab

Synergetic Control Framework for Autonomous UAV Swarm Coordination.

This study presents a synergetic control approach for coordinating the motion of a UAV swarm based on self-organization principles and energy potential interactions. The proposed method effectively addresses the known limitations of traditional potential field techniques by introducing a procedure for synthesizing the synergetic control of swarm motion using a virtual force field with symmetric attraction and repulsion functions. A Lyapunov/LaSalle stability analysis and a geometric safety radius argument show that this keeps the swarm's motion conflict-free, subject to the platform's kinemati

When breastfeeding meets work: Impact of daily action regulation at the breastfeeding-work interface among breastfeeding working mothers.

Work and breastfeeding responsibilities can often interfere with each other for breastfeeding working mothers who pump breast milk at work. While prior research has explored how contextual social support and organizational policies help these mothers manage work-breastfeeding challenges, the active self-initiated strategies breastfeeding working mothers can use to navigate these roles have been largely overlooked. This study addresses a critical gap in how breastfeeding working mothers can proactively regulate their actions to achieve desirable outcomes. From an action regulation perspective,
