The experiences of three women who underwent termination of pregnancy for medical reasons: a comparative methodological study using grounded theory analysis and interpretative phenomenological analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Termination of pregnancy [ToP] for medical reasons, especially for a wanted pregnancy, is an underexplored area in public health. Women face significant emotional, psychological, and social challenges, often compounded by inconsistent policies, healthcare inequities, and societal stigma. Additionally, the decision-making process can be influenced by financial and systemic factors, with women reporting long-lasting emotional impacts and inadequate mental health support following a ToP. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three women who underwent ToP for medic

The Application of a Protocol for Virtual Certifying Examinations: Five-Year Results (2020-2024).

OBJECTIVE: In 2016, researchers warned that as medical education becomes increasingly dependent on video-recorded data, protocols must be developed before an international conflict forces the conversion. Four years later, SARS-CoV-2 forced medical societies to find social distancing options for certifying examinations (CE). Our objective was twofold: incorporate a communication protocol that impacts the video-capture process for each candidate in an established review course; and monitor results on the CE (2020-2024). DESIGN: A multi-institutional prospective cohort design was used to assess

Attributional bias and reactive aggression.

This article looks at a cognitive behavioral intervention designed to reduce minority youths' (Latino and African-American boys) levels of reactive peer-directed aggression. The BrainPower Program trains aggressive boys to recognize accidental causation in ambiguous interactions with peers. The objective of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of this attribution retraining program in reducing levels of reactive, peer-directed aggression. This research hypothesizes that aggressive young boys' tendency to attribute hostile intentions to others in ambiguous social interactions causes d…

Neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation outcomes according to social determinants of health.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize relationships between social determinants of health (SDoH) and mortality among infants receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospectively, we identified infants born >34weeks gestation and >1.8 kilograms who received ECMO from 2010-2022. The primary predictor was the child opportunity index (COI). The outcome was in-NICU mortality. Due to interactions between SDoH and diagnoses, the main analyses were performed within the diagnostic cohort using multilevel socioecological factors. RESULTS: Overall, 2254 neonates received ECMO [conge

Temporal dynamics of frontoparietal processing during personal space intrusion.

Understanding the neural basis of personal space (PS) is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms of social behavior. We investigated EEG responses in healthy adults viewing approaching faces designed to simulate intrusions into PS. Approaching faces elicited stronger right N170 modulation than static faces, with weaker effects for non-face objects. Time-frequency analyses revealed early alpha-power decreases over the frontal region of interest (ROI), followed by later alpha-power decreases and gamma-power increases over the parietal ROI, selectively for approaching faces. Motion information was

Risk factors and mitigation strategies for spillover of MERS-CoV and other infections at the camel-human-interface: Rapid research needs appraisal.

Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), caused by MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV), is a zoonotic disease transmitted from camels-to-humans. We applied a targeted rapid research needs appraisal (RRNA) to review evidence and gaps on spill-over risk, mitigation measures, associated social and behavioural research. We systematically searched PubMed, Ovid, Scopus, Web of Science and WHO Global Index Medicus up to November 2024, studies on MERS and other zoonoses at the camel-to-human interface. The protocol and interpretation were informed by a WHO-coordinated MERS expert reference group and Secretari

The Risks of Exposure: The Impact of Social Circles on Youth Gang Involvement and Criminal Behavior in Adulthood.

Social interactions within deviant circles during adolescence increase the likelihood of criminal behavior in the ensuing years. Similarly, exposure to gang-involved peers, parents, siblings, and cousins heightens the likelihood of gang membership. However, few studies have simultaneously considered the impact of exposure to both gang and criminal justice-involved circles. This study addresses this gap by using logistic regression and administrative data from Multnomah County, Oregon, on male adolescents who received a criminal referral between 2002 and 2017. Our findings reveal that exposure …

Protein localization and potential function of lipocalin in Reticulitermes speratus queens.

To understand the mechanisms underlying social evolution and caste development in social insects, caste-specific organs and genes should be investigated. In the rhinotermitid termite, Reticulitermes speratus, the lipocalin gene RS008881, which encodes a protein transporter, is expressed in the ovarian accessory glands of primary queens. To obtain additional data on its expression and product localization, we conducted real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and protein assays using a peptide antibody. Gene expression analysis of the castes revealed that RS008881 was highly expressed i

A feminist political ecology of agricultural innovations in smallholder farming systems: Experiences from wheat production in Morocco and Uzbekistan.

A clear consensus has emerged that innovations are important for adapting to drought and overcoming other biophysical limitations in smallholder farming systems; however, women are notably marginalized from agricultural innovations. We examine whether and how gendered roles and responsibilities shape the adoption and usage of improved wheat varieties and simultaneously uncover opportunities to address and lessen gender-based differences in agricultural innovations. The field data were collected using snowball sampling from seven communities (three in Morocco and four in Uzbekistan) among 574 f

Neurological, Behavioral, and Pathophysiological Characterization of the Co-Occurrence of Substance Use and HIV: A Narrative Review.

Combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) has greatly reduced the severity of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders in people living with HIV (PLWH); however, PLWH are more likely than the general population to use drugs and suffer from substance use disorders (SUDs) and to exhibit risky behaviors that promote HIV transmission and other infections. Dopamine-boosting psychostimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine are some of the most widely used substances among PLWH. Chronic use of these substances disrupts brain function, structure, and cognition. PLWH with SUD have poor health outcomes
