Functional Connectivity of the Neonatal Cerebellum is Impacted by Sex and Polygenic Liability for Autism.

The cerebellum rapidly integrates with cerebral networks during infancy and shows consistent structural and functional alterations in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), suggesting that early cerebellar development may be consequential for later behavioral and psychiatric outcomes. Yet, little is known about the effect of ASD genetic liability on cerebello-cerebral functional connectivity in infancy or whether effects may differ by biological sex. Here, we leveraged neonatal functional magnetic resonance imaging, genetic, and behavioral follow-up data from the Developing Human Connectome Project (

Capturing Financial Burden Concerns in an ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is associated with substantial financial burden. How financial concerns are documented or addressed in ALS multidisciplinary clinics (MDC) is unclear. We aimed to characterize financial concerns among people living with ALS (pALS) and how they are identified and documented by multidisciplinary clinic staff. METHODS: We performed a retrospective electronic medical record (EMR) review for people living with ALS (pALS) attending at least two visits at the MDC, identifying documentation of financial concerns across all MDC notes throughout 20

Exploring cough hypersensitivity patterns across respiratory diseases.

BACKGROUND: Cough hypersensitivity is increasingly recognized as a key mechanism underlying chronic cough across diverse etiologies. The Cough Hypersensitivity Questionnaire (CHQ) was developed to systematically assess characteristic triggers and abnormal sensory perceptions; however, its structural and clinical relevance across respiratory diseases remains unclear. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 300 adults with chronic cough from multiple respiratory centers. Participants completed four cough-related questionnaires: the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ), Cou

Navigating Masculinities: An Exploration of Peer Coaching, Health Behaviors, and Mortality Risks Among Men in Tuberculosis and HIV Interventions in South Africa.

South African men remain disproportionately affected by tuberculosis (TB) and HIV, with social norms around masculinity often hindering care-seeking and medication adherence. This study investigates how Coach Mpilo, a peer mentoring intervention led by men who are TB survivors or living openly with HIV, engages concepts of masculinity to improve health outcomes among men in TB/HIV care. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with male peer coaches implementing the Coach Mpilo intervention in Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. Coaches, all TB survivors and/or living

Social inequalities in mental health: Exploring the mediating role of psychosocial resources in individuals with spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: Lower mental health was observed in individuals with lower socioeconomic position (SES) in the general population. Similarly, social inequalities in mental health have also been observed in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), however, there is limited knowledge of the nonbiological mechanisms contributing to this uneven distribution. Previous research has demonstrated that psychosocial resources are linked to improved mental health. The aims of the present study were (a) to investigate the direct effects between SES and mental health load and (b) the mediating role of psychos

The Influence of Music on Mental Health Through Neuroplasticity: Mechanisms, Clinical Implications, and Contextual Perspectives.

Music is a near-universal anthropological and sensory phenomenon that engages distributed brain networks and peripheral physiological systems to shape emotion, cognition, sociality, and bodily regulation. Evidence from electrophysiology, neuroimaging, endocrinology, randomized controlled trials, and longitudinal training studies indicates that both receptive and active musical experiences produce experience-dependent neural and systemic adaptations. These include entrainment of neural oscillations, modulation of predictive and reward signaling, autonomic and neuroendocrine changes, and long-te

Dementia strategies in an aging society: Policies, care, and global insights from the Japanese experience.

Aging of the population has become a critical challenge globally. The proportion of individuals age 60 years and older is projected to increase from 12% in 2015 to 22% by 2050, representing more than 2.1 billion older adults globally. This demographic transition is advancing particularly rapidly in Japan, which has become the first nation to become a "super-aged society". Projections indicate that by 2060, the number of older adults living with dementia will reach approximately 6.45 million (more than 17% of the elderly population), making it one of the country's most urgent health and social
