Finding meaning in parenting a child with Asperger syndrome: correlates of sense making and benefit finding.

This study explored the nature of two construals of meaning, benefit finding and sense making, in parents of a child with Asperger syndrome, and examined relations between both meaning constructs and the Double ABCX family stress model variables (initial stressor and pile-up of demands, appraisal, social support, coping strategies and adjustment) [H.I. McCubbin, J.M. Patterson, Social Stress and the Family: Advances and Developments in Family Stress Theory and Research, Haworth, New York, 1983, pp. 7-37]. A total of 59 parents completed questionnaires. Content analyses of parents' responses to…

Bridging the gap: technology-driven solutions to overcome food insecurity and improve nutrition access for older adults.

Food insecurity and social isolation are interrelated challenges affecting many older adults, with overlapping pathways that include limited income, reduced mobility, difficulty shopping or preparing meals, loss of shared mealtime routines, and lack of practical support for food procurement. These pathways may contribute to poorer dietary intake, malnutrition risk, deteriorating health, and reduced quality of life. As the global population ages, digital health and assistive technologies may support selected aspects of nutrition access, care coordination, and social connectedness, although thei

Supportive Relationships Mitigate the Effect of Cumulative Exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences on Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Suicide Considerations-The Arizona Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

Declining adolescent mental health is a significant public health concern during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing and stay-at-home orders have led to missed social connections with peers and adults outside households, and this has increased the risk of mental health problems in children and adolescents, particularly those with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Studies have shown that strong interpersonal support improves adolescent mental health. We examined the association between ACEs and poor mental health (including stress, anxiety, and depression) and how the presence of inter

The Latin American Multicenter Trial on psychosocial support during pregnancy: methodology and baseline comparability. Latin American Network for Perinatal and Reproductive Research (LANPER).

This article presents the methodology and baseline findings of a large multicenter trial involving four countries from Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and Mexico). The study was a randomized, controlled, single-masked trial to investigate the impact of social support during pregnancy on perinatal outcomes. Pregnant women with gestational ages between 15 and 22 weeks were screened in health facilities in the four countries. Those presenting with one or more risk factors for having a low-birthweight baby were invited to join the trial. A total of 2235 women--between 500 and 600 in each c…

Social anxiety in online social interactions: Examining the effects of self and audience images on anxiety, self-awareness and performance evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined social anxiety symptoms during online social interactions. We examined self-report symptoms in individuals with elevated social anxiety in online interactions in the presence/absence of virtual audience images and the presence/absence of live videos of the self. METHOD: Participants with elevated social anxiety who were not treatment-seeking gave a short impromptu talk via an online social communication platform. Participants were randomised to present with their camera on or off, and to audience images that were visible or not. We recorded participants'

The effects of stimulating the cerebellum on social sequences: A tDCS-fMRI pilot study: Los efectos de estimular el cerebelo en secuencias sociales: Un estudio piloto con tDCS y fMRI.

Research on the involvement of the cerebellum in social behavior and its relationship with social mentalizing has just begun. Social mentalizing is the ability to attribute mental states such as desires, intentions, and beliefs to others. This ability involves the use of social action sequences which are believed to be stored in the cerebellum. In order to better understand the neurobiology of social mentalizing, we applied cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on 23 healthy participants in the MRI scanner, immediately followed by measuring their brain activity during a tas

"Social Anxiety Disorder Carved at its Joints": evidence for the taxonicity of social anxiety disorder.

Previous findings suggest that social anxiety disorder may be best characterized as having a dimensional latent structure (Kollman et al., 2006; Weeks et al., 2009). We attempted to extend previous taxometric investigations of social anxiety by examining the latent structure of social anxiety disorder symptoms in a large sample comprised of social anxiety disorder patients (i.e., putative taxon members) and community residents/undergraduate respondents (i.e., putative complement class members). MAXEIG and MAMBAC were performed with indicator sets drawn from a self-report measure of social anxi

Oxytocin levels in social anxiety disorder.

Oxytocin is a neuropeptide recently associated with social behavior in animals and humans, but the study of its function in populations with social deficits such as autism, schizophrenia, and social anxiety disorder has only recently begun. We measured plasma oxytocin in 24 patients with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder (GSAD) and 22 healthy controls using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. There were no significant differences in oxytocin level (pg/mL) between patients (M=163.0, SD=109.4) and controls (M=145.0, SD=52.9, z=0.21, P=0.8). Within the GSAD sample, however, higher social anxi
