In various environments where primates are presently observed, as well as in forests and savannas which have been inhabited by australopithecines and early hominids, there are (or there have been presumably) categories of substances eliciting taste signals associated with stereotyped responses. Such is the case for various soluble sugars of fruits and nectars, attracting consumers, and for several plant compounds in which bitter or strongly astringent properties have a repulsive effect. The occurrence of such classes of tasty substances among natural products appears to be related to the evolu

NMDA receptor hypofunction has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, and pharmacological and genetic approaches have been used to model such dysfunction. We previously have described two mouse lines carrying point mutations in the NMDA receptor glycine binding site, Grin1(D481N) and Grin1(K483Q), which exhibit 5- and 86-fold reductions in receptor glycine affinity, respectively. Grin1(D481N) animals exhibit a relatively mild phenotype compatible with a moderate reduction in NMDA receptor function, whereas Grin1(K483Q) animals die shortly after birth. In this study we have ch

Contradictory effects of ovarian hormone on cocaine-induced behaviors have been reported in ovariectomized Fischer rats. To determine if these discrepancies are based on where the rats were purchased, Charles River Laboratories and Taconic Fischer rats were randomly assigned to either cocaine (15 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) or saline treatment; and one of four hormone-pretreatment subgroups: vehicle, estrogen, progesterone or estrogen + progesterone. Vendor differences were observed in cocaine-induced locomotor activities; overall, Taconic rats demonstrated less locomotor activity than Charles Riv

The substituted amphetamine 3,4 methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) is a popular recreational drug of abuse. Administration of MDA to experimental animals has been shown to induce damage to serotonergic axons and nerve terminals. However, there is a lack of information on whether these treatments can produce any long-term changes in behavioural performance particularly under stressful conditions. In the present study, MDA (7.5 mg/kg; i.p.) was administered twice daily to adult male Sprague Dawley rats for four days. Four weeks following the last dose, spontaneous behaviors of these animals were tr

The acute motor response to caffeine was studied in rats repeatedly treated with vehicle or the dopamine D(2) agonist bromocriptine either in a novel cage or in the home cage. Rats receiving bromocriptine (5 mg/kg i.p.) in a novel cage were sensitized to the motor stimulating effects of bromocriptine itself and showed cross-sensitization to the acute administration of low (10 mg/kg s.c. ) but not high (25 mg/kg s.c.) doses of caffeine, no matter if the novel cage was identical or different from the test cage. In contrast, caffeine (10 mg/kg i.p.) administered to rats which had received bromocr

Down through history, biological arguments have often been used to legitimize a social gender order characterized by male supremacy. In the 1990's, a lively debate on the biological grounds of gender differences once again emerged in various fields. In the present article, the biological models used for explaining cognitive and behavioral gender differences are scrutinized, and recent research is discussed in light of history. These biological models emanate from theories about sex hormones, genetics and brain anatomy. Regarding the cognitive effects of sex hormones, no consensus has been reac

Reach-to-grasp movements of patients with pathology restricted to the cerebellum were compared with those of normal controls. Two types of paradigms with different accuracy constraints were used to examine whether cerebellar impairment disrupts the stereotypic relationship between arm transport and grip aperture and whether the variability of this relationship is altered when greater accuracy is required. The movements were made to either a vertical dowel or to a cross bar of a small cross. All subjects were asked to reach for either target at a fast but comfortable speed, grasp the object bet

We prospectively studied the characteristics and early recovery of an unselected population of patients who had acute first-time lateral patellar dislocation. The recovery program used standardized rehabilitation, emphasizing range of motion, muscle strength, and return of function. Patients returned to stressful activities including sports as tolerated when they regained full passive range of motion, had no effusion, and when quadriceps muscle strength was at least 80% compared with the noninjured limb. Seventy-four patients met the enrollment criteria; 37 men and 37 women. The average age wa

Locomotor stimulation and behavioral sensitization induced by acute and repeated treatment with alcohol, cocaine or morphine were studied in the alcohol-preferring AA (Alko, Alcohol), alcohol-avoiding ANA (Alko, Non-Alcohol) rats and non-selected Wistar rats. Daily treatment with alcohol (ethanol, 0.4 or 1.0 g/kg, IP) for 6 days had no effect on locomotor activity either in the AA or ANA rats. Acute cocaine (5, 10 or 20 mg/kg, IP) produced a locomotor stimulation in the animals of all lines studied, and there was no difference in this effect between the AA and ANA rats. During a 4-day repeated

Rett syndrome (RTT, MIM 312750) is a progressive neurodevelopmental disorder and one of the most common causes of mental retardation in females, with an incidence of 1 in 10,000-15,000 (ref. 2). Patients with classic RTT appear to develop normally until 6-18 months of age, then gradually lose speech and purposeful hand use, and develop microcephaly, seizures, autism, ataxia, intermittent hyperventilation and stereotypic hand movements. After initial regression, the condition stabilizes and patients usually survive into adulthood. As RTT occurs almost exclusively in females, it has been propose

Nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE) has been delineated as a distinct syndrome in the heterogeneous group of paroxysmal sleep-related disturbances. The variable duration and intensity of the seizures distinguish three non-rapid eye movement-related subtypes: paroxysmal arousals, characterized by brief and sudden recurrent motor paroxysmal behaviour; nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia, motor attacks with complex dystonic-dyskinetic features; and episodic nocturnal wanderings, stereotyped, agitated somnambulism. We review the clinical and polysomnographic data related to 100 consecutive cases of N

Male birds of age-limited song-learning species develop their full song repertoires in the first year of life. For this type of song learner, once song is stabilized in adulthood, it is highly stereotyped and stable over time. Traditionally, it has been believed that age-limited song learners do not depend on auditory feedback for the maintenance of adult song. A recent report, however, showed that adult song in zebra finches, age-limited learners, does change after long-term deafness. We report here that another species of age-limited learner, Bengalese finches, depends critically on auditory

The effect of unilateral injection of peptides into the nucleus accumbens septi (NAS) on subcategories of grooming behavior was studied in male rats. The peptides used were: thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) and corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH). Male rats (Holtzman strain, 240-270 g body weight) injected with progressive doses of TRH (100, 200 and 400 ng) at 5-day intervals were compared with the control state (injection of artificial cerebrospinal fluid, CSF). A selective increase in face grooming was observed with the 100 ng (49.78 +/- 6.1

Theoretical models of animal and human sexual behavior have evolved from two very different literatures, yet they contain many common behavioral components that may reflect the action of similar neuroendocrine and neurochemical systems. The study of animal sexual behavior has been largely concerned with mechanisms that underlie the pattern of consummatory behaviors observed during copulation, behaviors that tend to be highly stereotyped, sexually differentiated, and species-specific. There are important species differences in the behavioral topography, endocrine control, and neural substrates

1. Two laying diets, control (A) and a low-energy (B) diet diluted by adding 450 g/kg wheat bran, were fed to semi-heavy hens in three different forms: mash, small pellets and large pellets. The behavioural adaptations and the production characteristics for these six regimens were studied on 72 individually caged hens, between 19 and 29 weeks of age, subjected to a lighting pattern of 14 h light/24 h. 2. Diet B, as mash, showed a lower apparent physical density than the others. The hardness and durability of the pelleted diets were similar. 3. Hens fed the mash diet B could not completely adju

Burn injury results in a rapid loss of intravascular volume as wound edema forms, which reduces the circulating blood volume and generates the need for fluid therapy to combat hypovolemia. Fluid resuscitation of a burn patient is usually carried out with isotonic, sodium- and chloride-containing fluids, such as lactated Ringer's solution. The initial 24 h resuscitation volume is based on the burn size and body weight of the patient. Following a successful resuscitation, the burn patient develops stereotypic neurohormonal and metabolic responses that, depending on the extent of injury, last for

Violence today appears to be ubiquitous: it even enters the clinical session, deeply internalized within child victims who were exposed to often unspeakable horror. Violence and its pernicious, horrific effects are observed in the streets, schools, parks, playgrounds, and homes of some inner-city communities. This article introduces the use of Anna Freud's Diagnostic Profile system with an inner-city child who, at the age of four, witnessed his mother fatally stab his father with a kitchen knife and at age eleven was assessed and treated by the author. Clinicians may wonder whether any kind of

Effects of environmental modulation of methamphetamine (MA)-induced behavior on the establishment and mode of expression of behavioral sensitization were examined. Rats received daily injection of MA for 10 days (1mg/kg, s.c.). Half of them were immediately returned to the home cage (home cage group) and the other half were individually confined in a cylinder with a diameter of 13cm placed inside the home cage for 3h after each injection (small cage group). Gross observations revealed that rats which received MA in the small cage did not locomote but showed sniffing and rearing. The third grou

BACKGROUND: Akathisia is a common side effect of neuroleptic treatment that is diagnosed on the basis of clinical observations. Its definition is regarded as complex and controversial. Thus, for example, while some authorities see akathisia as strictly an abnormal subjective state, others require the inclusion of specific repetitive movements. The present study suggests that the addition of objective accelerometric recordings to standardized clinical observations may increase the validity of this diagnosis.
METHOD: Sixteen chronic schizophrenic patients, treated with various neuroleptic medic

Functional consequences of pharmacological and toxicological manipulations of the dopaminergic systems were evaluated by means of the 2-[14C]deoxyglucose (DG) method for measuring local rates of cerebral glucose utilization. Administration of dopamine agonist drugs modifies glucose metabolism in selected brain areas. Several factors, such as the compound used, the dose, length, and modality of the treatment, and the interval of time between the end of the treatment and the measurement of glucose utilization, contribute to define the topography and intensity of the changes. The differences refe
