BACKGROUND: Tegafur is an antimetabolite slowly metabolized to 5-fluorouracil in vivo. Protracted administration of oral tegafur is active in metastatic breast cancer, with reported response rates ranging from 29 to 44%. The addition of folinic acid could improve the efficacy of tegafur by means of biochemical modulation.
METHODS: A prospective Phase II trial in patients with pretreated metastatic breast cancer was performed. The regimen consisted of oral tegafur (750 mg/m2/day) and oral folinic acid (45 mg/day) for 21 days, recycling at day 28.

BACKGROUND: It has previously been reported that 40 micrograms per mL of aminomethyltrimethylpsoralen (AMT) plus 2.4 to 7.2 J per cm2 of ultraviolet A (UVA) light inactivated 4 to 6 log10 of several model viruses in platelet suspensions. This inactivation was achieved while satisfactory levels of platelet count, pH, morphology, aggregation, and hemostatic effectiveness were maintained.

Between January 1986 and September 1989, 28 patients over the age of 14 years were treated with a combination of mitoxantrone, cytosine-arabinoside (Ara-C) and 6-thioguanine (MAT) at the Kuwait Cancer Control Centre (KCCC). While no unanimity of opinion exists regarding the risk to physical health from smoking marihuana, we have seen four cases that demonstrate clearly that intravenous usage is hazardous. The severity of the multisystemic involvement is dose-related. On initial examination, signs of most severe overdosage included fulminant gastroenteritis, hypoalbuminemia, toxic hepatitis confirmed by serial biopsy, acute renal failure, electrolyte disturbances, leukocytosis, anemia, and a relative thrombocytopenia. In three patients who shared a common needle, gingivostomatitis also developed.
