Memory dysfunction in epilepsy patients as a derangement of normal physiology.

Patients with CPS often display recent memory deficits. Typically, general intelligence, perceptual skills, language, remote memory, and pri … 3 are strongly modulated by familiarity in recent memory. This modulation is eliminated by anterior temporal lobectomy. The typical slow wave following spontaneous MTL interictal spikes has the same MTL voltage topography, and thus probably similar synaptic generators, as the cognitive P3 potential. Furthermore, MTL spike-and-wave complexes can be evoked in rec …

[Granulomatous hepatitis secondary to ingestion of carbamazepine. Report of a case].

A 51-year-old man with epilepsy received carbamazepine during three weeks. He developed fever, jaundice, dark urine and pale stools. Laboratory data showed hepatocellular injury and cholestasis; six weeks after withdrawal of the drug these abnormalities returned to normal limits. The liver biopsy showed acute cholangitis, bile duct injury, granulomas and eosinophils in the portal areas.

Barbiturate effects on EEG abnormality in complex partial epilepsy.

Sixteen patients with drug-resistant complex partial epilepsy were, during preoperative investigations for surgical treatment, subjected to intravenous methohexital and amobarbital EEG activation tests. The interictal epileptic spike discharges were visually counted on the seizure-generating side and compared with those found in the contralateral hemisphere. The invasive recordings were made with depth electrodes implanted in the mesial temporal lobes of 5 patients, and with subdural strip electrodes in varying lateral positions over the frontotemporal-parietal lobes of the other 11 patients. …

[Neuropsychiatric aspects of surgical indications of craniosynostosis and -stenosis].

In case of an indication for an operation on craniosynostosis not only an atrophy of the optical nerve, mental retardation and epileptic fits should be taken into consideration, but also the danger of faulty psychic developments, criminality of male patients, increased occurrence of psychoses and early cerebral blood flow disturbances as well as, especially in girls with scapho- or oxycephaly, cosmetic impairments with resulting psychosocial disturbances. Convulsions in craniosynostosis are not always an expression of a generally increased intracranial pressure, sometimes genetic couplings sho

Neuropathological and Golgi study on a case of thanatophotoric dysplasia.

Neuropathological examination of a 3-day-old female with thanatophoric dysplasia revealed abnormal sulci with polymicrogyria and neuronal heterotopia in the temporal lobes and cerebellar hypoplasia. Rapid Golgi stainings showed immature or maldeveloped neurons with short dendrites and a reduced number of spines in the cerebral cortex, and abnormal neurons with peculiar dendrites in the subcortical heterotopia. These abnormalities were predominant at the base of the large brain which occupied the hypoplastic middle and posterior cranial fossas.

Complex partial status epilepticus (psychomotor status).

A 20-year-old mentally retarded woman, who had a history of intractable epileptic seizures since early childhood, had prolonged episodes of confusion, decreased responsiveness and automatic behavior lasting as long as 2 days. These are believed to represent epileptic status of the complex partial (psychomotor) type because the electroencephalogram (EEG) recorded during two such periods showed continuous high amplitude, semirhythmic, 4 to 6 cycles per second (cps), spike activity over both frontotemporal regions; several interictal tracings revealed a consistent spike focus in the right anterio

High-resolution functional MRI at 3T in healthy and epilepsy subjects: hippocampal activation with picture encoding task.

Functional MRI (fMRI) studies of memory with coarse resolution of 4 x 4 x 5 mm often fail to demonstrate blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) activation in the hippocampal formation. This failure occurs when nonactivating white matter is averaged with the signal from hippocampal gray matter, attenuating the total BOLD signal from a single voxel due to the "partial volume effect." In this study, we evaluated the suitability of high-resolution fMRI at 3T (voxel size 2 x 2 x 3 mm) for improved visualization of hippocampal activation during memory encoding in 21 healthy and 6 epilepsy subjects

Frontal White Matter Hyperintensities Effect on Default Mode Network Connectivity in Acute Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

The functional connectivity of the brain depends not only on the structural integrity of the cortex but also on the white matter pathways between cortical areas. White matter hyperintensities (WMH), caused by chronic hypoperfusion in the white matter, play a role in the outcome of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other neurodegenerative disorders. Herein, we investigate how the location and volume of WMH affect the default-mode network (DMN) connectivity in acute mild TBI (mTBI) patients. Forty-six patients with acute mTBI and 46 matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. All partici

Effects of Partial Occlusion on Response Dynamics and Interregional Processing within Primate Superior Temporal Sulcus.

Recognizing partially occluded objects is a critical visual function that primates perform with ease, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Previous studies in the macaque inferotemporal cortex have reported mixed results on whether occlusion delays and reduces responses to partially occluded objects. To address this, we recorded single-unit activity from body-responsive regions of the middle and anterior superior temporal sulcus (STS) in male macaques while presenting body stimuli with varying levels of occlusion using a dot pattern. Occlusion reduced response s

Artistic imperative and epilepsy of Van Gogh.

An examination of the work process of the artist Vincent Van Gogh from a cultural- and medical-historical perspective, this article looks at the role of temporal lobe epilepsy in shaping of the painter's impulse to create, his methodology, and characteristics of his work product. All artists employ disparate methodologies to merge the landscapes of internal and external experience, and the drivers of an individual artist's creativity are multi-fold. In the case of Van Gogh, synthetic aspects of the artistic process, data of personal history and the exigencies of an illness contribute to a dyna…

Human cortical dynamics of auditory word form encoding.

We perceive continuous speech as a series of discrete words, despite the lack of clear acoustic boundaries. The superior temporal gyrus (STG) encodes phonetic elements like consonants and vowels, but it is unclear how whole words are encoded. Using high-density cortical recordings and spoken narratives, we investigated how the human brain represents auditory word forms. STG activity exhibits a distinctive reset at word boundaries, marked by a sharp drop in cortical activity. Between resets, STG encodes acoustic-phonetic, prosodic, and lexical features, supporting integration of phonological fe

Facial distortions as a critical test for models of the organization of visual function.

Ritchie et al. propose a novel framework for understanding the organization of visual function in the occipitotemporal cortex (OTC). We argue that neuropsychological evidence from individuals with prosopometamorphopsia (PMO), a condition in which faces appear distorted, offers a unique opportunity to test models of OTC. Drawing on findings from a large-scale experiment that used naturalistic stimuli with five individuals with PMO, we show that distortions in two cases appear to be face-specific. These results highlight the value of integrating neuropsychological, computational, and behavioral

Differential Expression of hsa-miR-134, hsa-miR-155, hsa-miR-122 as Biomarkers of Epileptogenesis in Patients with Acute Cerebral Injury.

It is difficult to predict the process of occurrence of an epileptogenic focus in patients who have suffered acute cerebral damage. The aim of our study is to investigate and describe the possibility of using microRNAs as biomarkers of epileptogenesis. Objective of our work was to evaluate expression of hsa-miR-134-5p, hsa-miR-155-5p, and has-miR-122-5p in different groups of patients. Quantitative comparison of relative concentrations of the studied microRNAs in the blood plasma of three groups of patients was carried out: Group I - patients with temporal lobe epilepsy; Group II - patients wi…

fMRI evidence of movement familiarization effects on recognition memory in professional dancers.

Dual-process theories propose that recognition memory involves recollection and familiarity; however, the impact of motor expertise on memory recognition, especially the interplay between familiarity and recollection, is relatively unexplored. This functional magnetic resonance imaging study used videos of a dancer performing International Latin Dance Styles as stimuli to investigate memory recognition in professional dancers and matched controls. Participants observed and then reported whether they recognized dance actions, recording the level of confidence in their recollections, whereas blo
